Is Marvel Placing Steve Rogers Back Behind the Shield in July?

Recent reports seem to indicate that Steve Rogers may very well resume the responsibilities of Captain America:The First Avenger in time to coincide with the release of the much anticipated film.

As we are all aware, it has been ages since the one and only Steve Rogers has been the man behind the Captain America mask. He was considered dead for over a year and once revived, was content to let his good friend (recently discovered still alive) Bucky Barnes carry the mantle of Captain America while he ran things as the head of SHIELD.

It has seemed a little strange (to me at least) that with Captain America:The First Avenger due to hit theaters this summer, Marvel would be content with another man behind the Captain America mask. Well, a few days ago I ran across the following bit of information at (((BleedingCool))).

In July, Captain America will relaunch with a new number one, a new cover by Travis Charest, the same writer Ed Brubaker
And, yes yes yes, it looks like Steve Rogers is back in the uniform.

I hesitated to post this info because there seemed to be no source or reason for the proclamation. However, earlier today I read the following solicitation for June's Captain America #619 at (((CBR))) and IMO, the synopsis would seem to fit nicely with the news reported by Bleeding Cool.

From CBR...CAPTAIN AMERICA #619

The events of Fear Itself collide as our two stories reach their stunning conclusion. From his cold Russian prison cell, Bucky makes a decision that will change his life forever. And in the Steve Rogers: Super-Soldier back-up, the first repercussions of Bucky's actions may destroy everything Steve has worked so hard for. It's the stunning conclusion you won't believe!

What do you think? Does it look like Marvel is placing Rogers back behind the mask to coincide with the release of Captain America:The First Avenger or am I reaching here? It certainly seems like a move that would not only make sense to many but has also been expected for quite some time.

I think he should stay as the top cop of the MU for a little while longer, certainly wouldn't be against it but I am enjoying Secret Avengers too much, Steve Roger's is total bad ass in that book. But it would make sense I guess we'll have to wait and see.

@marvel72 thats why I don't want to see him becoming cap not yet any way. But who knows he can still be the top cop of the MU, but it would be weird seeing him in full attire in Secret Avengers.

Bucky's been worthy successor, and I have mentioned before but isn't great seeing two former sidekicks one from marvel and one from DC taking up there mentor's mantle. and doing things a little differently.

Eh, I'm neutral on this. I think Bucky has alot more stories to tell as Captain America, and I really enjoy Steve's current role and costume. The only complaint I have is that Bucky is only so-so on the main Avengers team. I'm not upset, but I was very happy with how things are right now.

Still, I'm honestly curious as to what Bucky starts doing if he gives up the shield...

I think Bucky would be better off reclaiming his Winter Soldier persona. I love that character and it fits him.

@ exiles

i'm not a fan of bucky cap, sorry steve is the only cap for me.

just wished they keep him as top cop like you said for a while, then when the time is right bring back the true captain america.

the recent kang story in the pages of the avengers, wasn't there a hint at what will happen to bucky cap in the future.

maybe that event will bring back the true cap.

@ fish&chips

i buy mine in the trade paperback form,i can't afford buying single issues.

they're on about issue 11 or 12 by now.

Of course he will. Marvel loves tie ins. Did you read Stark Resilient? Giving Tony back an arc reactor in the chest and up against a corporation under Hammer control for military contracts.

No, I hope this doesn't happen.

I'm still furious that they let Bruce be Batman again after Dick took over, but don't let Steve be Cap again.

Bucky IS Captain America.

To repeat, LAME. ESPECIALLY if they kill Bucky. People who see the movie and then pick up a comic and get confused can darn well buy back issues. Not to mention, everybody should own Brubaker's run, at least in the trades.

I'm not saying that this story will be bad. Brubaker seldom writes a bad comic, but if its just to coincide with the film, that sucks. They should just let it happen when it fits the story. I love Secret Avengers and Bucky has definitely not warn out his welcome as Cap in my opinion. If they're going to do this, Steve and Bucky should trade gigs and Bucky can lead the Secret Avengers.

I don't really read Marvel (the last thing I followed was Civil war...) but I knew this was coming.

BTW, Steve Rogers is the Director of SHIELD? That's a trade I'll have to pick up sometime...

Bucky as Cap has been an absolute brilliant run and I'm going to be sad if this is true, especially cause I like what Rogers is doing now on the Secret Avengers. I wonder what's gonna happen to Bucky then...

Is this really a surprise? Johnny Walker replaced him for about a year and a half in the 80s before Steve returned. Steve Rogers is the one true Captain America.

Besides you can't have Captain America and Avengers movies starring Steve as Cap if you have someone else in the role in the comics.

I think that Bucky is going to do something that REALLY [frick]s things up for a LOT of people in the Marvel U. The clues have been all over the place lately and I think they're setting the stage to get Steve back in the mask. I'm all for it and have enjoyed Bucky's run but it's time to get Steve back in the stripes.

Although I dont read any non-Batman comics, be it DC or Marvel I respect Captain America, always have.
That being said, I have to admit that I praise Marvel's marketing strategy as it's deffinetly better for the comics to support the movie and vice-versa unlike the dumb assholes in DC who decided to kill off Bruce Wayne right after the biggest success a Batman movie ever made... NO the biggest success a superhero movie ever made... No the biggest success....u know what I mean! The Dark Knight is the 3rd all-time grossing movie in history (back then before Avatar it was 2nd) and what do those geniuses do in celebration? They kill off Bruce Wayne (sorry, they zap him back in time!!) and bring in yet another Batfake aka Grayson in the lead, and when Bruce returns he goes all Bill Gates on his alter ego creating vmultiple versions of his alter ego!!! Laaaaaaaaaaaame!! Sure the DC bean counters got cash.. but they ruined Batman forever for old timers like me.
Now with Captain America, it makes sense for Steve Rogers to pass the shield as unlike Bruce Wayne he did not create the notion of Captain America he was merely chosen for it. But I tend to have a respect for those who carry the torch first, so yeah I praise Marvel's decision to bring Rogers as Captain America.

why couidn't they just leave well enough alone? leave Bucky as capt. it seems like everybody is scared of change, whenever a character gets some sort of makeover, people get upset.
