Though there have been a few minor alterations here and there, for the past 40 years Captain Marvel's origin story has always gone back to the hero gaining her powers when her DNA was fused with Mar-Vell's during an explosion, but Marvel Comics has now made a significant change to that established backstory.

In the fourth issue of the Life of Captain Marvel series by Margaret Stohl, Carlos Pacheco and Erica D’Urso, it's revealed that Carol Danvers' mother was actually a member of the alien Kree race, making Carol a Kree-human hybrid from birth. This means the The Psyche-Magnetron accident merely "activated" her abilities.

We also find out that Carol's real name is actually “Car-Ell," and her mother, previously known as Marie Danvers, is “Mari-Ell.”

We don't for certain that these changes will inform the plot of the movie, but given what we already know about Danvers' (Brie Larson) big-screen origin, it seems like a safe enough bet.

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel sidesteps the traditional origin-story template, and when it begins, Carol already has her powers. She’s left her earthly life behind to join an elite Kree military team called Starforce, led by Jude Law’s enigmatic commander. But before long, Carol finds herself back on Earth with new questions about her past. And she’s got a formidable enemy in the form of the Skrulls — the notorious Marvel baddies made all the more dangerous by their shape-shifting abilities. Ben Mendelsohn plays their leader Talos, who spearheads a Skrull invasion of Earth.

Life of Captain Marvel No. 4 is available both digitally and in stores now. The Marvel Studios film opens March 8, 2019.
