After
Captain Marvel was trolled by so-called "fans" earlier this year, Rotten Tomatoes has decided to take drastic measures in order to overhaul the way its "Audience Score" system works. Now, only ratings from users who can prove they've bought a ticket to see the movie in question will ultimately be counted and this will obviously go a long way in combating so-called review bombs.
The aim of those is to push the "Audience Score" down by as much as possible to try and put people off seeing a film regardless of what critics have made of it.
Captain Marvel was the most noteworthy victim of this trend as anyone who didn't agree with Brie Larson's progressive views decided that they would sabotage its score (which didn't remotely work because the Marvel Studios release ended up grossing over $1 billion at the worldwide box office).
Interestingly, the only way users will no be able to contribute to this score is if they've bought a ticket through Fandango but the company insists that increasing ticket sales is not the primary reason for the change. Apparently, it has deals with AMC Theatres, Regal, and Cinemark Theatres to allow their customers to also get involved but we don't know what this means for those overseas.
However, everyone will be able to share reviews; they just won't be "verified" and won't count towards that "Audience Score."
