THE MARVELS Director Nia DaCosta Pitched An X-MEN Movie Featuring A Cyclops/Storm Team-Up To Marvel Studios

The Marvels director Nia DaCosta has recalled pitching an X-Men project to Marvel Studios that was set to revolve around a Cyclops and Storm team-up! Find more details about her ambitious idea right here.

Nia DaCosta put herself on the map with 2021's Candyman remake/sequel, though Marvel Studios had already enlisted the filmmaker to take charge of its Captain Marvel sequel, The Marvels

It's common for Kevin Feige to meet with filmmakers and hear their pitches and, sometimes, years will pass before their phones ring with an offer to lend their talents to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That won't always be for one of the projects originally discussed either and, in DaCosta's case, she was initially keen to tackle X-Men.

Well, two specific X-Men.

Asked about a recent TV spot which appeared to tease the X-Men (the "X" in "NEXT" was the last letter to fade off the screen), DaCosta largely dodged the question but shared her dashed hopes to bring Cyclops and Storm to the screen.

"I really like Scott Summers and Storm together and their dynamic fighting over who should lead the X-Men, like in the Chris Claremont run," the filmmaker said, proving she's a legit comic book fan. "I think some Cyclops and Storm team-up movie would be fun."

It's an undeniably fun-sounding premise, though not one Marvel Studios is likely to explore before the X-Men franchise is rebooted for the MCU. That isn't expected to happen until after Avengers: Secret Wars, but if The Marvels is well-received, it's entirely possible DaCosta could eventually be involved in that mutant-filled corner of this shared world.

It's clearly a passion project for the filmmaker, anyway, as she first recalled this pitch while promoting Candyman two years ago. "I just nerded out," she said of her initial meeting with Marvel Studios. "I was like, 'Here are the movies I think you should do! Galactus, Storm, and Scott Summers team-up movie! Blah blah blah!'"

It's unclear how The Marvels will fare at the box office this weekend and we're expecting the first social media reactions to drop later today. It's always wise to take those with a pinch of salt but the embargo on full reviews will lift tomorrow morning, meaning a Rotten Tomatoes score is incoming!

Back to X-Men and Marvel Studios is said to be meeting with writers to develop the project.

The Marvels arrives in theaters on November 10 with preview screenings beginning the evening before.

Let's see how her movie does first, before entertaining anything else.

@Urubrodi - The article says that this is something she pitched before she was chosen for The Marvels, not that she's been selected for the job or that the movie's going into production.

Cool cool she gets it

@Vigor - Magneto would be more fun, or Thor imo.

@The1st - we got enough of both

@Vigor - None of them have been done right. Magneto too old (then too Kinbergy), Storm (love Halle, but no), Cuclops (Liked Marsden, but wasted..and the rest meh or not relevant). Here's hoping we get consistent actual X-Men this go round.

It would have been fun to see the Marvels themselves on press, but Nia is a delight herself. I gotta admit, I've never leaned too much in director interviews for Marvel stuff, but I really like the way she thinks. Hope you guys can have some spoilery exclusives with her after the movie's out.

We'll find out soon ig if she has any future at all at Marvel, it's pointing at no because she's an easy one to get rid off if this really does go as low as it currently seems at the box office. But yea, anything she's saying about the main trio here shows a lot of care. Let's see if that actually manifests. I wasn't a fan of her Candyman film tbh - but she does shoot with purpose and style.

As for X-Men, I really do hope for a focus on Storm and Scott. They are both long overdue for proper respect and Storm in particular has VERY RICH comic history. I'd make them the faces of the new franchise.

@WakandanQueen - Yes, I don't need a crossover right now give me the gold and blue teams, accurate casting and relationships...and Exodus, but that could get overly religious very quickly if done wrong.

Any fan of cyclops

@hue66 - I am, dude should actually be shown leading the team first before they have someone else come in to try and take his position. One of my issues with the Fox's film was that we only really got that one scene at the end of the first film were he's giving orders before Wolverine butts in, any other time it was Wolverine, Storm, Xavier or Jennifer Lawrence calling the shots.

I always get a bit of a better feeling about these Directors that actually know and like the comic book medium before trying to make a Marvel or DC flick.

I love her approach. The things. Having actual comic nerds making these movies is a great thing! Looking forward to seeing Marvels.

Cyclops should be leader, then Storm maybe after 2 or 3 movies.

Her intentions are obvious, how about letting cyclops be leader for a while before setting up his replacement.

I think they should introduce Storm in a Black Panther project. I would also like to see Storm team/hook up with Dr. Voodoo who should be introduced in a Dr. Strange feature.
