In Avengers: Endgame, there was a big moment for the team's female members when they assembled to take the fight to Thanos. A nod to A-Force, some felt the scene was forced, while others viewed it as an empowering precursor to a future team-up involving these and other characters.
During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, The Marvels director Nia DaCosta shared her thoughts on this important moment for Earth's Mightiest (female) Heroes. The filmmaker admitted that the scene annoyed her, but perhaps not for the reason you might think.
"I, like many women around the world, watched Avengers: Endgame, and had that six seconds of all the Marvel women together. I once had chills, but I was also very annoyed," DaCosta says. "I was like, 'Two hours of this, please.’ So it was really nice that they decided to do a team-up movie with three of my favourite heroes, so that’s what was most exciting."
In The Marvels, the director will be given the opportunity to deliver a female-led team-up when Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan come together for a cosmic adventure. DaCosta would go on to tease that "sisterhood" and compared Ms. Marvel's admiration for Captain Marvel to the young Monica's.
“While Carol and Monica are having to find their relationship again after all this time apart, we have Ms. Marvel who idolizes Carol in the way that Monica used to when she was younger," she explains. "So, you have these two adults having to reconcile their relationship while this younger person is also having a relationship that mirrors the way Monica and Carol used to be together."
"I find it really interesting to see them together and how they become a little bit of a sisterhood with their own different points of view," DaCosta concludes. "It’s actually really nice and fun and very sweet watching them all work together."
Seeing these three on screen promises to be a blast, and DaCosta is clearly looking to bring female empowerment into the MCU in a big way. Some "fans" won't be happy with that, of course, but we'd say the Captain Marvel sequel has all the makings of a hit.
The Marvels is set to be released in theaters on July 28, 2023.
