What The CAPTAIN MARVEL Cast Reveal And Synopsis Tell Us About The Marvel Studios Movie
Yesterday, Marvel Studios announced the start of principal photography on Captain Marvel so we're now taking a closer look at that press release to figure out what it tells us about the 2019 release...
We've seen quite a few photos from the set of Captain Marvel in recent weeks but it was only yesterday that Marvel Studios announced the start of principal photography. With that came a synopsis, casting details, and news on who will be working behind the camera. While you might not think that there's an awful lot of information to be garnered from a press release, you'd be surprised!
Here, we take a look at everything from what we should expect from the story to those big Guardians of the Galaxy returns, the ramifications the Kree/Skrull War might have on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and what the people working behind the scenes are best known for. So, to check out this list in its entirety, all you have to do is click on the buttons below to check out all the biggest reveals...
The Movie Had An Awful Lot Of Writers
Marvel says that "an all-star collective of accomplished writers" penned Captain Marvel but that's still a hell of a lot of cooks in the kitchen when it came to adapting this Marvel Comics property. In total, it has seven credited scribes in the form of Meg LeFauve, Nicole Perlman, Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Liz Flahive & Carly Mensch, and Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck. So, an impressive but obviously large group.
This isn't necessarily cause for concern but it clearly took a lot of work for Marvel to get Captain Marvel right. Regardless, here's a look at the projects each of these writers are known for working on:
Meg LeFauve - The Good Dinosaur, Inside Out
Nicole Perlman - Guardians of the Galaxy, Detective Pikachu
Geneva Robertson-Dworet - Tomb Raider, Silver & Black
Liz Flahive & Carly Mensch - GLOW, Nurse Jackie
Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck - Mississippi Grind
Bad News For Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.?
Clark Gregg's return to the big screen side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is exciting news but does it pretty much confirm that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will come to an end with its fifth season? The show hasn't been renewed and with the actor set to be busy working on this project, he may not have time to return to the ABC series as juggling both projects could be a little too much for the actor.
If Coulson is showing up in flashbacks, would it not have been easier for Marvel to have cast a younger actor? He is a young 55 to be fair, though, and could pull off being in his 30s with some decent makeup but what if the events of this movie will somehow lead to his return to the wider MCU? That could be wishful thinking but you have to imagine that at least some of this release will be set in the present.
Captain Marvel Is "One Of" The MCU's Most Powerful Heroes
The brief synopsis for Captain Marvel reveals that the movie will follow Carol Danvers as she "becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes." In past interviews, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has made it clear that she's actually THE most powerful character in this world so it's hard to say whether this is backtracking or simply confirmation of what a formidable force she's going to be.
If Captain Marvel is more powerful than someone like Thor, though, that raises the problem of her being damn near invincible and with the hero set to join the fight against Thanos (we assume) in Avengers 4, it wouldn't hurt to dial her abilities back to at least some extent in that and this outing.
The Supporting Cast
A number of names are confirmed here, including some we haven't heard about before now. In terms of the confirmed cast members, we have Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, and Jude Law. The question now is, who is everyone place and what about the new additions we didn't know about? For now, all we can do is take a look at their respective bodies of work.
Algenis Perez Soto starred in Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's Sugar, Rune Temte is a Norwegian actor known for Eddie the Eagle and Fortitude, while young McKenna Grace is known for Designated Survivor, Fuller House, and Ready Player One. Could it be she's playing a younger version of Carol?
Some Familiar Faces From Guardians Of The Galaxy
Well, this is interesting! Ronan the Accuser is one of those villains many fans believe was wasted so giving him a second chance of sorts is a smart move and one which will allow him to be a little more fleshed out. We already know that he basically lost the plot and became a villain when a war between the Kree and Nova Corps led to the demise of his father so are we going to meet a heroic version of Ronan or will we see the events which led to him fleeing the Kree Empire and seeking out Thanos?
Either one of those is a very likely possibility and it's going to be fun seeing what Lee Pace does with the role. As for the return of Djimon Hounsou's Korath, I'm not expecting much from the character beyond Marvel finding a fun way to link Captain Marvel to Guardians of the Galaxy. With that in mind, though, what are the odds that we'll get to see a couple of other characters from that franchise?
The Kree/Skrull War
We've known since last year that Captain Marvel will revolve around the Kree/Skrull War but it's very interesting to see that the synopsis mentions Earth "being caught in the middle of a galactic war." Does that mean the fight is brought to our planet and if so, why has it never previously been revealed that Earth suffered an alien invasion long before Thanos sent the Chitauri to New York City?
Chances are that the Skrull invasion will be a discreet one as they start replacing powerful people on Earth, a plot thread which could easily be picked up on in the present day. For now, though, we'll have to wait and see as there are a lot of different ways Marvel might approach this comic book storyline.
An Impressive Team Behind The Scenes
It's been confirmed that Captain Marvel boasts an incredible behind the scenes line up made up of names like director of photography Ben Davis (Avengers: Age of Ultron), Oscar-nominated production designer Andy Nicholson (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), costume designer Sanja Hays (Star Trek: Beyond), editors Elliot Graham (Steve Jobs) and Debbie Berman (Black Panther), two-time Oscar nominee, visual effects supervisor Christopher Townsend (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), stunt coordinator Jim Churchman (Ant-Man) and six-time Oscar nominee, special effects supervisor Dan Sudick (The Avengers). So, yeah, an awesome team has definitely been assembled for this movie!
No Sign Of Everett Ross
After Everett Ross mentioned that he used to be a pilot when he appeared in Black Panther and that's led to a lot of speculation about a younger version of the character showing up here. While that's still possible, he's not mentioned on the cast list, so it could be one fan theory we can put to rest. However, it's hard to imagine us not seeing at least some familiar faces in this 1990s set adventure.
