COMICS: Geoff Johns Teases The Future Of The Justice League And More!

Talking revealingly about his work with Jim Lee on the best selling comic book series, writer Geoff Johns teases both what we can expect to see in the rest of this first arc as well as what to expect after it...

Talking to IGN Comics, Geoff Johns has let slip plenty of interesting new details about what's next for Justice League once the current arc (set five years in the past showing how the team came together) wraps up. There's plenty more to be found over at the site, so be sure to click on the link below to read the interview in its entirety.

On What Else We Should Expect In The Rest Of The First Arc:

You should probably expect the unexpected. There are some relationships, especially in issue #2, that will be familiar, but then there are other ones that are going to be completely different from what they used to be. And even moving forward, past this arc, there's a bunch of different relationships on the team that won't be… well, you just have to expect the unexpected with what we're doing. We're kind of pushing these guys to new areas, especially with all of their personalities dialed up to 15. The first arc really lays the groundwork with how this group interacts and the subsequent arcs build off of that and the experiences they've had together.

On Whether It's Been Difficult To "Go Back To Basics" With The DCU:

No, it's super fun. You know, the thing I love most about all of these books – even Green Lantern where we're keeping everything we've done intact – is going back to a character driven approach. What I want to do is rely more on the characters themselves and explore them in different ways and show different sides to them than we have before. With Justice League, Green Lantern, and Aquaman, I think we're doing that. But it's a challenge in a different way because I think that we're all approaching them very differently, but I'm certainly trying to approach the books much differently than I have before. In Green Lantern in particular, because I've been writing it for so long.

On Working With Artist Jim Lee On The Series:

I've been wanting to tackle Justice League for a while and Jim and I have been wanting to work together for a while. I think he wanted to do a project where he could draw all of the DC characters. So it kind of grew from that. We started working and talking about Justice League quite a while ago. I mean the stories and characters and tones have been in the works for, I mean, dating back to last year.

On The Future Of The Series After The First Arc And What We Can Expect To See:

The series is pretty big. You're going to see a lot of developments during this first arc that will ripple into the present day. You'll see what the tone of the DC Universe is and why. You'll see why the Justice League is formed and why they stay together, which I don't think has really been explored beyond there being threats. There's more to it than just "there's a lot of threats in the world." There's a reason these characters stick together. You'll see new villains. You'll find out why Aquaman and Green Arrow hate each other. [laughs] It's actually a pretty good story behind that, and that will come to light. You'll see the never ending problems that exist on the team because of Batman and Green Lantern. You'll see why Wonder Woman is the best fighter among the team. You'll learn why Superman keeps his distance from everybody else. There's a really cool arc where Superman and his role on this team is a little bit different than before. I think that's on purpose; he's a little bit disconnected from them. You'll see why Flash refuses to call himself a vigilante.

She was also in Flashpoint 5....Now sure.I think she may be a failsafe in case DCnU doesn't work out. That really makes me nervous. It smacks of a lack of a long term editorial direction for the New DC. I hope I'm wrong, though.

I;m still confused as to why Superman would send GL through a wall during their first encounter. Doesn't seem very super at all more like what a douche would do.

BTW: @ MrEko Batman is the brains of the group like always.

@MrEko Keeping his distance has been Batman's thing for a while now.

@SuperGuy sure, cause everything being armour-y, edgy, dark is a new thing. Your need to personally attack me makes me understand better why you like this DCnU...

@StrangerX well, SUperman seems to be a douche now. So, maybe that's the new super thing to do. Until this whole Flashpoint-return to the 90s thing is done...

@MrEko agree 100% with you on that one. Specially on the Tarantino thing.

Was just joking with the fact that, for a few years now, not really wanting to be a part of team, keeping his distance, has been Batman's thing. ;)

Batgod? WTH? Bat-haters. I mean, Shazam was already in a weakened state and certainly wasn't expecting whatever it was that Batman hit him with.

Batgod...whattabunch o' maroons.

Furthermore, Wonder Woman should be the best fighter on the team given that out of anyone on the team next to Batman, she's the only one who's trained to fight from a young enough age where it matters. People bring up Superman learning whatever fighting method it was back in the 90s but he started that training reletively late in life and as anyone who's trained to fight will tell you, Superman would be a reletive novice next to WW and Batman. But in fighting skill, Batman should get the edge over WW because he can counter any fighting type known.

@SuperGuy what's wrong with that? He has a tiny missile that hits harder than Supes. He pretty much shrugs off being hit by lighting (or moves faster than it).

Nothing wrong with that... LOL>

@fanboy76 what having lines, turtle neck and diamond shapes everywhere? And an armour. Yeah... No!
rbfn04
rbfn04 - 9/21/2011, 8:31 AM
@SuperGuy another thing that gets me is how, everytime bats fights anyone, they forget what advantages their powers gives them. Specially when it's Superman...

sorry for double post.

I think the girl in the purple cloak/hood is probably a character that will have a major role in DC Comics next big event which I believe is Morrison and Frank Quitley's Multiversity series. Morrison has said he is still schedule to do that series as soon as the new DCU is establish.

We've only seen one issue of the new DCU, I'm waiting until after the first story arc to judge the new DCU. I guess Superman is the outsider on the team, Wonder Woman the best fighter, Green Lantern the armory, and Batman the organizer of the team. Thats my guess for his role on the team.

As a big Superman fan, I think I will like this take on him. Batman will probably still be a loner also, and maybe this will be a bond for the two of them. Two different perspectives, one who basically a god among men who wants to feel the human side, and the other who is the perfect human specimen, but has to deal with these super powered beings. They should be friends, but with obstacles to overcome.

Although, I have never been very big on the focus on Superman and Batman, I hope Clark and Bruce still become the good friends they did. Bruce is a loner, but it was cool to see he could always trust in Clark. Clark was friends with everyone and the others wanted him to like them. With Bruce their was just a great mutual respect for each other. Clark knew he was the most powerful being on earth, but he also knew his intellegence couldn't compete with Bruce's. They taught each other so much that no one else in the league could.

To the numbnuts that cheer the removal of thr so called undies on the outside. Look again at the picture posted in this article. They arent gone they are just blue now. Still the change of colors makes it look lame especially with the belt acting as an arrow shouting look at my crotch

@thegdsuperguy "This Superman doesn't trust humans" ummm great more proof the character of Superman is COMPLETELY destroyed and there is now a weak cranky imposter in his place. I just hope the Man of Steel Movie doesnt follow the new alleged Superman. The majority of the audience would say who the efff is this ahole, that spreads and the movie is an instant flopp

daschysta - 9/21/2011, 2:58 PM
Did you guys not read Action Comics #1? Where did you get that superman doesn't trust humans? He doesn't neccesarily blindly trust authority, particularly when he sees that they are exploiting the poor and helpless, but he's putting his life on the line to protect the little guy, both with the pen, and the proverbial sword.

If anything he's probably concerned about the scope of the "justice league" and that by focusing on worldly threats and galactic conflicts he'll lose the opportunity to be the champion of the downtrodden.

Just because superman isn't acting like he did in grounded, and is a little bit younger doesn't warrant the reactionary, baseless hysteria that some fans have about the characters portrayal.

Also this DCnU isn't going anywhere, DC is dominating in sales, picking up tons of new readers, and the reboot is generally a smashing success, what reason would there be to go back to the old continuity.
