Talking to IGN Comics, Geoff Johns has let slip plenty of interesting new details about what's next for Justice League once the current arc (set five years in the past showing how the team came together) wraps up. There's plenty more to be found over at the site, so be sure to click on the link below to read the interview in its entirety.
On What Else We Should Expect In The Rest Of The First Arc:
You should probably expect the unexpected. There are some relationships, especially in issue #2, that will be familiar, but then there are other ones that are going to be completely different from what they used to be. And even moving forward, past this arc, there's a bunch of different relationships on the team that won't be… well, you just have to expect the unexpected with what we're doing. We're kind of pushing these guys to new areas, especially with all of their personalities dialed up to 15. The first arc really lays the groundwork with how this group interacts and the subsequent arcs build off of that and the experiences they've had together.
On Whether It's Been Difficult To "Go Back To Basics" With The DCU:
No, it's super fun. You know, the thing I love most about all of these books – even Green Lantern where we're keeping everything we've done intact – is going back to a character driven approach. What I want to do is rely more on the characters themselves and explore them in different ways and show different sides to them than we have before. With Justice League, Green Lantern, and Aquaman, I think we're doing that. But it's a challenge in a different way because I think that we're all approaching them very differently, but I'm certainly trying to approach the books much differently than I have before. In Green Lantern in particular, because I've been writing it for so long.
On Working With Artist Jim Lee On The Series:
I've been wanting to tackle Justice League for a while and Jim and I have been wanting to work together for a while. I think he wanted to do a project where he could draw all of the DC characters. So it kind of grew from that. We started working and talking about Justice League quite a while ago. I mean the stories and characters and tones have been in the works for, I mean, dating back to last year.
On The Future Of The Series After The First Arc And What We Can Expect To See:
The series is pretty big. You're going to see a lot of developments during this first arc that will ripple into the present day. You'll see what the tone of the DC Universe is and why. You'll see why the Justice League is formed and why they stay together, which I don't think has really been explored beyond there being threats. There's more to it than just "there's a lot of threats in the world." There's a reason these characters stick together. You'll see new villains. You'll find out why Aquaman and Green Arrow hate each other. [laughs] It's actually a pretty good story behind that, and that will come to light. You'll see the never ending problems that exist on the team because of Batman and Green Lantern. You'll see why Wonder Woman is the best fighter among the team. You'll learn why Superman keeps his distance from everybody else. There's a really cool arc where Superman and his role on this team is a little bit different than before. I think that's on purpose; he's a little bit disconnected from them. You'll see why Flash refuses to call himself a vigilante.
