In recent years, The Joker's origin story has become increasingly convoluted thanks to the introduction of multiple versions of the Clown Prince of Crime. Now, DC Comics has promised to finally reveal the villain's greatest secrets in "The Joker Year One," a terrifying three-part tale that will play out across Batman #142#144, starting next February.

After the current "Mindbomb" story concludes in January's Batman #141, the Dark Knight will discover the terrible secret behind his greatest enemy.

The story begins in Batman #142 by Chip Zdarsky, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Stefano Nesi, Andrea Sorrentino, Alejandro Sánchez, and Dave Stewart. In part one, the tragic "death" of the leader of the Red Hood Gang in a vat of chemicals has become the subject of myth...but what is the heartbreaking and gruesome tale of the monster who walked away from that violent birth?

From the first pages of "The Joker Year One" onward, it's said readers will be left questioning everything they know about The Joker, but how will it all affect Batman’s distant future? Within each issue of "The Joker Year One," artists Andrea Sorrentino and Dave Stewart are going to illustrate a story juxtaposed to show the far-reaching impact The Joker will have on DC's Caped Crusader.

Next, in Batman #143, a mysterious figure from Batman’s past has come into Joker's orbit, changing the Clown Prince of Crime forever. And what secrets does the re-formed Red Hood Gang have for Batman’s future?

Batman #144, meanwhile, features the climactic, chilling conclusion to "The Joker Year One," delivering massive repercussions for the future.

The Red Hood Gang is on a rampage and the only man who can stop them...is The Joker. And can Batman stop a devastating new virus in a future where The Joker looms over everything?

After "The Joker Year One" concludes, the previously announced "Dark Prisons" story will run through Batman #145 - #148, where Batman will face a terrifying figure from his past to survive Zur's onslaught. And if Batman survives, a new enemy is waiting in the wings: Amanda Waller and the U.S. military.

2024 sounds like an exciting year for Batman fans, but is an origin story for The Joker really what fans want or need? More and more has been revealed about the villain in recent years, taking away much of the intrigue surrounding one of DC Comics' most popular villains.

Boooooooo. No origin needed for Joker. It's kinda like when they finally revealed Logan's origin and it just took away of the fun mystery of him.

@lazlodaytona - I actually thought logans origin was fine but I agree

@BlackSpider - fair enough

@BlackSpider - I think Wolvy might be the only time where a mystery was revealed and didn't suck or diminish the character. I do miss the mystery even though I do love the origin stuff too, so it's a wash.

@lazlodaytona - Jeez man I was about to write the exact same thing, about both!

Joker and Wolverine never needed origins, the whole thing is we'd always be trying to piece it together without 100% certainty.

Exactly my thoughts, no one asked for Wolverine Origin and for good reason. Also DC can‘t possibly top The Killing Joke, that book is just a masterpiece.

Definitive, until it's not. They can call it definitive, be we all know it will just be one more amongst many.

@TheVandalore - I'm also wondering how it could be "definitive" when they've done a storyline with 3 Jokers...

“Event” comics have really gotten out of hand. Hopefully, if they really do a definitive origin story for the Joker, someone will have the common sense to ret con it.

No please. “Heartbreaking and gruesome” reels of sympathetic villain. No thank you.

@OptimusPrime114 - exactly. If there's a villain we shouldn't be sympathetic for, is him.

Btw they lose the point of explaining the villain's logic and having the audience sympathize with them. Very different things.

They had the opportunity to do something cool with the origin in Three Jokers and blew it. And even then, I wasn't interested in a Joker origin book. Just best to never answer this.

I have personally believed all of his origin stories that have been hinted at are all canon. I believe each time DC did a reboot, Joker lived a new life with a new origin, but remembered his previous life. He's constantly in a state of flux. He IS every iteration seen in the comics. My personal headcanon

I thought the killing joke was his definitive origin story and to be honest DC won't top that so why should I bother

All it takes is some new writer coming in and saying that this origin is also only a possibility, and then it's gone.

Doubt it's gonna stick. If a future writer has a good idea for a Joker origin, it'll be (re)written also. Joker's origin is about as definitive as character deaths in comics

Nomis929 - 11/17/2023, 11:54 AM
*sigh* Here we go again. Every 10 or so years we always get a "Definitive" origin of the Joker and it always changes a few years later.

Leave it ambiguous, it's more interesting.

The most over-rated character in history.

I wonder why a white guy that's a regular guy and a serial killer is so popular...

(That 2018 Joker movie never should have been made.)
