COMICS: Dan Slott Teases Norman Osborn's Return; Artwork From AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #699

Many fans weren't too pleased to see Norman Osborn (a.k.a. the Green Goblin) become an Avengers-level threat, so it should come as very good news that Amazing Spider-Man writer Dan Slott has some big plans for the villain! We also have some of Humberto Ramos' fantastic artwork from issue #699.

Norman Osborn is one of the most iconic Spider-Man villains of all-time, and while Peter Parker currently has his hands full with Doctor Octopus, fans have been keeping their fingers crossed that the man who killed Gwen Stacy would finally return to make Spidey's life a hell. After he seemingly awakened from his coma in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man #697, series writer Dan Slott has told Newsarama that he does indeed have plans for the 'Green Goblin' turned 'Iron Patriot'! What are they? Well, he doesn't give anything away, but it sounds like this is going to be good...

"Every time I've gotten a chance to play with Norman Osborn, he's been under someone else's purview. Either while Warren was doing Thunderbolts, or while Brian was doing Dark Avengers. Someone else had ownership of that character, and because of that, I was limited with what I could do with him. I couldn't do anything that would mess up someone's plans."

"If you're a Spider-Man writer, and Norman Osborn's alive, who wouldn't want to play with the Green Goblin? When Brian last left the character, he was in a coma, which is a great place to leave a character, because any writer can go, "And then he wakes up." Not kidding. A coma is a great place to leave a character. It sounds horrible in the real world, but in the world of comics, it's a very polite thing to do. I'm dying to do some Norman Osborn stuff."

"There's that feeling of, "Whoa, we're free and clear on the Norman Osborn side," but you want to have some space. After Brian does this seminal return of Norman story in Avengers with the Super-Adaptoid twists, you don't want to immediately go, "And now he's over in Spider-Man, next month." You want to give it some time to breathe. But I have every intention in the world of using Norman Osborn fiendishly."

Meanwhile, Comic Book Resources have posted a few preview pages from next month's Amazing Spider-Man #699. This issue will reveal exactly how and when Doctor Octopus managed to take over Peter Parker's body and will presumably set the stage for the much-hyped #700.

I agree with Marvel-since when was becoming more of a threat to Marvel U a bad thing?

if anything, that helped establish Norman as one of the major villains.

Slott's run has been subpar at best. Some of his work has been good, but most of his other stuff is very mediocre. Plus, he's an asshole on twitter.

@LoudLon

shut the [frick] up.

the artwork's great. with your mentality, we'd have never evolved out of the 1930's drawing style, even into the one that you loved from the 70s and 80s.

@ all

hey guys, i haven't followed the spider-titles closely in a while, so i got a question:

is slott's work saved by ramos' art? by that i mean, is this guy a [frick]ing horrible writer, but he gets by because ramos is a startlingly wonderful artist? or does slott really have some chops and has done parker & co justice overall, despite some hiccups?

Not a huge comic reader, and years out of date with Spider-Man.

Can someone fill me in on why Doc Ock looks like a shaven Dr Eggman who's been in the tub for too long?

I never thought I'd read the words "Humberto Ramos" and "fantastic artwork" in the same sentence.

If only John Cassaday could draw everything...

Norman will be like "Ah Hell No!!! If anyone kills the arachnid it is me!!!"

He'll reverse the mind swap and undo Ottos plans...then be on his merry way...safe in the knowledge that Peter now owes him his life...

This will likely drive Pete over the edge and he'll have a break down and decide to be more tough on crime...taking the Superior stance...also at the same time he'll have to create a new secret identity and kill Peter or have him dissapear in someway as Otto and Norman (he lost the knowledge of his identity) now know who he is...and it would be too dangerous for his loved ones....

Who disliked Osbourne becoming an Avengers-level threat? It's the best, most innovative thing Marvel has done in ages.

"Humberto Ramos' fantastic artwork" = oxynoron. The guy's a major hack who should be kept far away from mainstream superhero comics.

I actually liked Osborn becoming and Avengers level threat. I mean he technically still is, but he's operating on his own again is all. When he's backed by soldiers and such he's still a huge threat.

The top panel on that first page looked really good, except for those cartoony faces. Cartoony art just doesn't work with this story. Call me a "hater" or whatever juvenile name you want, on serious stories, I prefer a more realistic art style, such as classic Adams, Perez, Epting, Bolland, or John Cassaday (sp?). Cartoony art just detracts from the seriousness of the story, imo. It takes away from the dramatic tension. Cartoony art is fine for light-hearted stories or characters. For example, Ramos' work was ideal for Impulse. It fit the character and the stories well. It would work with a comic based on the Ultimate Spidey cartoon, which is Spidey, but is quite silly. It just doesn't work for me in this story.
