COMICS: Marvel To End The Ultimate Universe With 616 Avengers Crossover?

Another rumour to come out of Marvel's recent creative summit is that an Avengers vs. Ultimates crossover in 2014 will lead to the end of the Ultimate Universe. Will you miss the alternate take on some of Marvel's most well-known heroes? Read on for details!

When it was first created, the Ultimate Universe made for a great jumping on point for readers who didn't fancy tackling decades worth of continuity or simply wanted a fresh spin on familiar characters. Unfortunately, events like Ultimatum have left the universe a messy and confusing place. Gone are the days of Mark Millar and Brian Michael Bendis' critically acclaimed new takes on The Avengers and X-Men, with Ultimate Spider-Man (a series which no longer has Peter Parker behind the mask) the only title which truly still does what Bill Jemas set out to do when he created the universe over a decade ago. Well, according to Bleeding Cool, it sounds as if we will see "an Avengers Vs The Ultimates series next year, the second 616/Ultimate crossover, pitting one Captain America against the other." As if that wasn't exciting enough, it turns out that this event will "lead to the end of the Ultimate Universe, in print published form at least..." So, perhaps the Ultimate Universe will still live on in Marvel's popular digital format? How do you guys feel about this news? Be sure to sound off with your thoughts in the usual place!

Are you kidding? Ultimate Spider-Man with Miles Morales is one of the best things Marvel is publishing right now.

It should have ended with Ultimatum, even if there was some halfway decent stuff afterwards.

If they got rid of the ultimates and ultimate x-men but kept ultimate spider-man I'd be fine with that. I love the ultimates 1&2 but after they gave the ultimates 3 to jeph loeb I lost all interest in the ultimates. Ultimate spider-man though has been the best marvel book of the 2000s and it would be a shame if they did end it.

Wow this is really sad. I love the Ultimate line. They're the only comic books I read, because there's too much Marvel history for me to go back and read everything, and I'm one of those people that needs to know a story from beginning to end. :(
The crossover event sounds cool, because Spider-Men was awesome, but I would be extremely sad to see the Ultimate line go. It would mean the end of my comic book days...
I feel like a lot of people dislike the Ultimate line because they killed off a lot of characters (including my all-time favorite, Peter Parker). But honestly this universe has grown so interesting in the past 13 years, and there is some great storytelling happening for those (like myself) who have kept up with it. I have gotten many people into comics with the Ultimate line, and I really think that the universe was finally coming together again (forming a new Ultimates team, x-men will be re-instated with return of Xavier, and Miles is good but hopefully Peter can come back???) It is a different take on characters, and Reed Richards as a villain is inspired. Incredible story-telling. Definitely support the Ultimate universe, and I'm not ashamed to say it. :)

Ultimate Marvel is great I really do not understand all the hate but I will look forward to this

@LEVITIKUZ not really. It's more like civil war but with the ultimate universe. AvX was the x-men vs everyone else in the marvel universe.

Not surprised. They pretty much allowed the Universe to be trashed to make it different to give the effect that's"anything can happen", but all they pretty much did is kill of tons of possible story-lines that could have existed. I actually Like Ultimate Spider-man, but honestly, that's it. I used to LOVE the Ultimates, but Loeb seriously messed them over with Ultimatum to a point where it was no longer fun anymore.

@Spideyguy94 It's all like Civil War, Marvel hasn't had a good event since Secret Invasion. The past couple years have been very non compelling even at their best.

Ultimates is a watered down (not a ultimatum flood joke) version of what it was, It took major risks with it's characters and was pretty interesting to see real repercussions and character deaths.. i would rather it go out with bang rather then as a ill conceived event like this lol.

That said, with Marvel Now, I'm not a fan of this current era either. Well, at least I have the movies.

Ultimatum killed it. Thank you Loeb...ass

Mark Millar and Brian Michael Bendis became my favorite writers because of the Ultimate Universe. So it's bitter sweet...

@LEVITIKUZ I know, I'm sick of heroes fighting each other. Civil war was the first one to do that and it was f*cking awful, it's one of the worst comic books I've ever read and I'd advisd anyone to stay away from that piece of shit. I want to see superheroes fight very hard villains to beat. While we're getting that finally with age of ultron but then where going back to shit like this. Why don't they do something else like oh I don't know the avengers fighting Kang or galactus.

@SpidaTrav Most comics aren't for the "general audience" the "general audience" are kids who pick up spiderman/avengers in grocery isles which is why you have crap stories like AvX that only children enjoy.

Ultimate universe is awesome here is why "Adult themes, Characters actually stay dead"

The Ultimate line is the only one I read from Marvel, they hardly have any of these stupid cross over events that you have to buy 12 issues of other titles that you dont read just to get the whole story.
It makes me laugh, if this is true, they will be discontinuing a line of comics that the movies drew a lot from.
Also, Marvel can do a lot with the Ultimate universe that they cant do with the normal one, like killing Peter Parker and having a young mixed race take his place.
I'll be gutted if they get rid of this line. :(

Ahh... You mother[frick]ers...
I can't speak for the entire Ultimate universe line (anymore at least; dropped a lot of shit after Ultimatum), but Ultimate Spider-Man is the best Spidey book out atm, if they cancel that then it's just dumbness...

The Ultimate Series have been uber awesome! People are idiots who haven't been reading anything spun out of the Ultimate Universe! I swear some people. If anything they should expand the Ultimate Universe and give it more titles. I swear most people that comment just don't read any of these comics they have opinions on!

Never read it.

Glad I never wasted my money - was for punks who couldn't hack the real shit.

I wonder if there is anyone worth bring across to 616? ...like they did for Dark Beast, Blink and Dark Nightcrawler from AoA universe

I loved the Ultimate universe that Millar and Bendis created, but I hated what Loeb did with Ultimatum I think he was paid by DC to wreak it imo lol.

i've been a fan of the ultimate line for a while but you have to admit at this point its gotten kind of silly the storylines were good for a while but it does seem like theyre running out of stories most of the main characters are either dead or almost unrecognizable. The best thing i think they can do is bring the 4 cities that theyve made and bring them to the 616 universe i'd love to see Zorn and Xorn face of the 616 x men and plus reed richards city(i forget its name) is going to make for a really epic bunch of storylines. I dont want them to destroy all the history the ultimate universe had. I think these characters have grown into their own thing but yeah its time marvel focused the insane ammount of resources they dedicated towards ultimate comics(4 comics right now 2 ongoing) towards the 616 universe. Maybe just one comic named the ultimates and thats it

Ultimate universe was all about being gritty and edgy and "new". I say good riddance. Only comic I've enjoyed from this line is Ultimate Spidey.

And if this is going to blend the two--mainstream and Ultimate, as I thought about and some have mentioned above--I am going to be sorely disappointed.

Good!!! I've never liked the Ultimate Universe anyway so it's good to hopefully see Marvel going back to their roots b.c IMO Marvel has been slowly declining with their comics. AvX was disappointing and do not get me started with Ultimate Avengers.

Marvel once said that if the 616 and Ultimate universes crossed-over, they would have officially run out of ideas.
