Bootleg scans for Marvel and DC comics find their way online around the afternoon of their release, but where are they all coming from?

You can get bootleg scans of pretty much any comic by the afternoon of their relase, but nobody is sure where they come from. David Brothers and David Uzumeri did some investigating and a bit of speculating.

DC comics bootleg sites start posting one at a time on Wednesday afternoon, but MARVEL scans pop up all at once, before the digital releases at 2 P.M ET. This makes it appear as if the DC comics come from hackers who can get into comiXology, but the Marvel scans are from somewhere else.

David Brothers went over some of the clues — the uniform size and quality of the Marvel scans, the placement of titles and credits, information that would only appear on a print comic, and some very telling errors — and concluded that “Someone’s got Marvel’s print-ready files before they’re finalized, and they’re slapping them up online as digital scans."

While it remains to be seen who would risk thier job and deal a hit to Marvel, but money is a possibility. But then again, there isn't much profit in pirating comis, if any at all. Comics has some fanatic fans, so it could be someone who loves comics but is disgruntled at Marvel. Who knows?

Here's an example. Can you spot the differences and figure out which one is the pirated copy?

UPDATE: According to a recent CBR update to the original report, the "mole" or "hack" is not a person at all but an undisclosed security leak.

Personally, I think it was Colonel Mustard in the library with a candlestick. Who knows? It really is a mystery who is doing it, but it justs shows that in this case piracy is somehow connected to the source. What do you think? Sound off below!

probably the same people who have been scanning them and uploading them for 10 years Thorverine - you say there isnt much profit but you really show how little you understand piracy in it current form (the media hasnt picked up on it and it isnt widely reported) the people who upload earn ( a bit of dosh ) every time 100 people download their file (sites like rapidshare reward with rapid points which can be sold on to other members) comics, particularly marvel and DC have been scanned and uploaded on the day of release for around 10 years or so now

I was hoping someone wouldnt write article on this... maybe a month ago someone gave away a link to a free scan site. I couldnt believe it when i saw it.. i was dumbfounded to know every comic that came out weekly existed online as well as older comics and those from other companies. I refuse to print the sites. But this type of article is the one that gets people searching simply because most people weren't aware of this fact until currently.I see alot of people complaining about the price of comics and series they've dropped because of that. But im sure this article has put people in the know and there goes a drop for dc and marvel product. Not a smart article to post at all.Internet wise somethings you have to keep to yourself and share with close friends and should publicize. Bad idea for a article no more freebies for anyone once things like this become public knowledge. Btw the comics are tagged by their hacker groups and individuals

They sell the digital copies of the comic over at Comixology.com. Anything electronic can be copied (don't be fooled) So more than likely it is coming from that. The thing that gets me is since they now sell the comics anywhere from $.99 to $3.99 (maybe more for anthologies), why would anyone want a pirated copy?

@MrReko: So true. Digital Comic's will never hold the value that prints do. You honestly dont get the same feel from reading things digital.I prefer to feel it in my hands and read at my leisure opposed to having to focus so hard. But you are right "The internet is the future"... the pirated copies are on point. They come in handy when it comes to catching up...i was out of the loop for 10 years in comics until recently. As a matter of fact dude to the drastic change in the art from the 90's to now i just stuck to buying Manga. Alot of american artist suck now a days. Google is awesome btw lol. God Bless The Internet. I want to catch up on Milestone too i coped all of spawn's book recently..my dad burned up all of my books as a kid *Evil* so its been nice re-reading books from my childhood. But yeah you have to be ahead of the curve when it comes to the internet maybe offer digital subscriptions or something because of regardless of how hard they try you cant stop the internet... shut down one sight and another pops up.

I love love love comic books. But that doesn't blind me to the fact that the publishers are overvaluing their products, monetarily speaking. The ideal situation would be an online store that sells digital copies of comics for 0.99 from all publisher, that can be accessed across a multitude of devices -- none of this Marvel/DC exclusivity on each device. This site would have to match what is currently available online now, however, which means virtually every back issue you could think of. This kind of wide reaching, simple format is how iTunes brought the music industry back from the dead. In the end, you're never going to be able to curb piracy, especially not of something as easy to reproduce nowadays as an image, but creating a legal, viable alternative goes a long way to corralling consumers into a forum that's profitable for the creators.

@Thorverine haha! I dont download comics because the industry needs fans to keep going HOWEVER I have downloaded graphic novels I already own - but since the digital comic "revolution" it has become even easier for the pirates - before I was just saying how they make money from it since the original article questioned how they would make a profit from it

Considering that comics sales have been down for, oh, about 15 years, you all might not be surprised to hear: Comics companies haven't made money off of the monthly "pamphlet" books in years.

Where do they make money? Well, TPBs help, but licensing is the gold prize. So, how do you make characters worth licensing when virtually no one is buying comics anymore?

You make them available online for "pirated" download. It gives the characters an international following, keeps them in the public eye for that always-coveted young demographic, and might even turn into sales, since most people hate reading on their computers.

Think about it, these scans -- from ALL the companies -- come out w/in a week of the comic's release yet you never see staples, no crooked pages, no bent corners, no ghost images from the other side of each page. The files come from people within the companies or from the printers (with permission). Not just at Marvel. Everywhere. Perhaps Marvel's process for this differs from the others.

It's pretty obvious.

@ chechen: The amount of plot holes in TDK, not to mention senseless B & C plots (e.g., the guy who knew Bruce Wayne's secret, the citizens dressing like Batman, and 3 or 4 others), plus the inability to clearly edit even ONE action scene in any clear way proves you've no clue what you're talking about.

I'm not saying you can't love TDK, but none of Marvel's movies -- which are not as artistically gratifying as Nolan's work (they're very paint-by-numbers in terms of storytelling, lensing, directing) -- have the number of plot and character problems of Nolan's Batman movies.

@phlegmbot actually until more recently you could tell they were scanned (in fact quite a few stil are) one side of the age will be slightly lighter, every now and again they will be blurry - it doesnt normally take a week either, the big titles will be up on day one - the digital distribution has made it even better but they definately use scans

both marvel and dc need to figure out a way to work together for the ipad - comixology isnt good enough imo there needs to be a better app and back issues need to be well priced - the ipad/tablets can help dwindling sales with sales of back issues (although imo they should only be sold as collections not individual issues)
