After the recent “Totally Awesome Hulk” reveal (Click Here) Marvel Comics came under fire from some loyal comic fans for a lack of creativity when it comes to creating new characters.

The latest news about Marvel’s Native American character Red Wolf getting his own ongoing series may help to soothe those burns.  Red Wolf’s first appearance was as “Talltrees” in "The Coming of Red Wolf!" published in Avengers #80 (cover-dated Sept. 1970).  Red Wolf was reintroduced in the current 1872 series.  The signs for a Red Wolf series were definitely foreshadowed as he was featured in Marvel’s All New, All Different teaser art.

According to Mashable. The series will be written by Nathan Edmondson and artist Dalibor Talajic, with Native American artist Jeffrey Veregge inking the covers.  The series is set to launch in December.  Think of Red Wolf being to New Mexico what Daredevil is to Hell’s Kitchen.

Veregge said,

"There's not a character like Red Wolf out there right now.  As a native, I’m really excited to see that he can do things, he can figure out things and stand with Captain America, and hold his own in this universe. That’s what’s awesome about it: You have all these characters of different nationalities and ethnicities, but it’s not all about their culture. It’s about them being a hero."

On the Red Wolf’s background or association with any specific tribe, Edmondson said, "Nobody should go to this looking as its historical.  He comes from another dimension, after all.  But, it's very important for us to approach it in as authentic a way as possible.”

On the character’s abilities, attitude, and personality, Edmondson said “Above all, he’s resourceful.”

"He’s kind of in a sense the Jason Bourne of the West, who can find a way out of any situation, or a way to use the resources of whatever room or position he may be in, he’s not a gunslinger, but he might use a gun if he has to. ... But beyond all that, he’s just a brawling, tough-as-nails fighter."

What do you think, are you going to pick up Red Wolf this December?  Sound off in the comments!

Agreed.

@EricBorder

Great find, man. Small suggestion though: I rarely find a release date on these comic preview pieces. It'd be a nice addition.

Let's see... old Captain America. Amadeus Cho is Hulk. Wolverine is old, and still dead.
It looks like I'm done with Marvel.

So his not really a Native American but looks like one from his own dimension?

Confused on the part of different nationalities and ethnicities & to approach it in as authentic a way as possible; part.

Thanks, issue #1 will be released in December, that's as specific a release date we have so far

Neat cover, but is that costume really necessary? It seems like Native American characters always get saddled with traditional costume elements (or "Hollywooded" versions, at least).

Marvel already has some great NA characters, but I guess they're mostly X-Men, so it makes sense they wouldn't want to put them front and center. Too bad, because Forge, Thunderbird, and Moonstar have always been some of my favorite second stringers...

Cool! Sounds interesting...

I'm assuming it's set in the 1800s?

"Marvel already has some great NA characters... that are more well known."

Is what I meant to say. Red Wolf isn't exactly a new character. And now's our chance to see if those people that complained about non-white-male characters taking the mantles were being honest when they said: "Marvel should just create new characters for minorities to increase diversity."

Red Wolf has been around for decades as more-or-less a symbol of diversity in comics, but now that he's being thrust into the main spotlight, lets see if anyone complains about that, too.

@Matador

Oh, I didn't forget. I just wanted to. :)

As far as costume stereotyping goes, it's sort of remarkable how little variation there is in it. Apache Chief/Long Shadow, Nightwolf from Mortal Kombat are also in the mix.

Red Wolf circa-1970's actually looked pretty badass without being "generic Indian". I could see a modernized version of that costume really working, with the wolf's head cowl being like Moon Knight's hood, and larded down with weapons and tools.

And then you notice that he's wearing bare-ass chaps....

Look, I respect people trying to increase diversity, and I'm not trying to be offended on anyone's behalf, but I have to wonder what actual Native people think about characters of their ethnicity being pidgeon-holed into "Pocahontas" aesthetic more than 90% of the time...

I guess it's a delicate balance. If they stripped Red Wolf of every identifiable Native American affect, then they're essentially white washing him anyway, so I guess the point is to what degree the traditional costume elements are authentic vs. stereotyped by pop culture. And that's honestly beyond my knowledge to judge... If the cover is reflective of a new look for him (as opposed to the banner where he looks very generic), then it looks like they may have found the right balance, even if he does look a bit like the Darkness.

Completely off-topic...

Without exaggerating, I must have watched the opening theme song to the 90's X-Men cartoon a thousand times, and I never noticed Thunderbird was on Magneto's team...

Wow...

What were you reading before you were done with Marvel?

Doesn't seem interesting at all. Put him in a period and it'd be much more interesting. Put him in 18th cent China or Europe, or even East Coast America and it'd be much more interesting.

@DellRusk

I was reading Wolverine, then Wolverines. X-titles, Thor until he became a woman, Cap until the second issue with Falcon. Avengers, X-Titles, Fantastic Four, Hulk, Daredevil, Spidey. I will probably give the new Spidey issues a chance, but I really don't like where I see Marvel going.
Just a personal preference. The whole Secret Wars thing has been lame, in my opinion. I know some guys like it. That's cool.

He's gotta kill bad mo-fo's right?...he has a gun & a tomahawk.
Don't tell me he's going to shoot & not kill or not scalp fools.
If he does..I'm IN,if he does not..OUT.

So this guy is essentially a Native American punisher? There's no way he can be non lethal with an axe and a gun. Also does wolverine kill people with his claws?? Also if he does are people just okay with it?

@Spock0Clock - That funny how you mention Apache Chief that would suck to be right under him during his giant mode or he happens to have the shits that day.

@Melkaticox

If you've read the comments on here and around the internet, a lot of people aren't really happy with the change, and a lot are ok with the change, but I'd say the majority of the comments are about race, the Hulks hair, where's Banner, and why can't Marvel just create a new character instead of changing the Hulk

The answer is obviously because their trying to sell comics, haha

I'm fine with the change, and it definitely makes sense for the character, I think it'll be interesting, but it's really comes down to personal preference

We might get some news of a new Iron Man tomorrow too, according to Bleeding Cool

Im probably the minority here, but i completely love female Thor, Falcon-Cap, Kamala Khan and Cho-Hulk. Not only they are cool concepts and characters, but I think it really is what we need. We have been reading the same stories for 50 years! It just makes the stories more interesting. The old characters (who I completely love) have been put in countless different situations so there is always less room to explore. Of course the real solution is to hire new writers but I just feel that with these different characters there is just INFINITE room to explore, its refreshing. Besides it is obvious that these are temporal changes just for fun that will last a year and then we'll be back withe the good old characters, "refreshed" and hopefully with some awesome new stories.

Rogers will be Cap again and so will the rightful "Thor". We all know this will go back to the way it was before with the proper characters in their respective roles. So I don't mind this little shake up. We should be use to this by now but by judging by certain peoples reactions its like its the end of the world for their beloved characters.

Well, good for bringing a old character back and modernizing them.

Just do a good job Marvel.
