Nemesis 2 was supposed to be released in 2012, with original creative team Mark Millar and Steve McNiven set to reunite for a sequel to the twisted first series. For some reason, it never happened, and a big screen adaptation got stuck in development hell after going through a number of filmmakers.
It's believed the latest draft is being penned by Emerald Fennell, though what little we know about the project points to it having very little in common with the comic book it's based on.
That's a real shame, but on the plus side, a new Nemesis series is now heading our way next January. Written by Millar, Batman artist Jorge Jiménez has also boarded the project. He says, "[The] Nemesis series has everything I need to develop my style as an artist in a crazy, daring way and without filters. This series plays nimbly between extremely harsh scenes and hints of badass humor, extreme violence and some serious dramatic touches."
Nemesis followed a Batman-like supervillain who was more akin to The Joker than the Caped Crusader. A mass murderer, he was responsible for a number of terrorist attacks and ultimately found himself matching wits with a cop called Blake Morrow.
The series took us to some disturbing places, and even featured Nemesis artificially inseminating Morrow's daughter with her brother's sperm, rigging her womb to collapse if an abortion was attempted (the family was Catholic). We're intrigued to see how Nemesis Reloaded compares in 2023, especially as things have changed a lot since the original was released.
The four-part series made for exciting reading, though, and Millar never shies away from pushing the boundaries. Given what happened at the end of Nemesis, it remains to be seen who is beneath the mask, and as of right now, we're not sure if Morrow will return.
