Todd McFarlane Teases New SPAWN Animated Project With Concept Art

From 1997 to 1999, HBO produced the animated series, Todd McFarlane's Spawn. It even won an Emmy for Outstanding Animation Program in 1999. Now a new animated Spawn project is in the works and McFarlane is using his facebook page to tease it.

Just about an hour ago, Todd McFarlane posted a message on his facebook page. The message, which you can read below in its entirety, teases a new animated Spawn project. McFarlane also provided a sneak peek - three pieces of concept art. The first image is character designs for the NYPD homicide detectives, Sam Burke and Maximilian "Twitch" Williams. Their partnership is built on one of them being the brawn and the other being the brains. I'll let you guess which is which. They were so popular that in 1999 they received their own spinoff comic.  The other two images McFarlane released are of the gritty locale that Spawn/Al Simmons will surely inhabit.
For ALL of you that have been asking...here's a SNEAK PEEK at some NEW SPAWN ANIMATION that is in the works!!!!!! Don't tell anyone I showed you because you're the FIRST to see it!!!!!!

At every convention and in every interview I do I am asked a couple of repetitive questions: "When is the new Spawn movie coming and when are we going to see more Animation like we did on HBO years ago?" (I also get a lot of 'when are you going to draw The Amazing Spider-Man for Marvel again?'...)For those of you that don't know, the original Spawn Animation was aired on HBO for three years and won a couple of Emmy Awards. Ever since it went off the air, fans have been bugging me to bring it back. Well, for your eyes only, here are some early images of a few key characters and a rough of a city street in black and white and in color.

If you all seem interested there is LOTS and LOTS more I can show you!!!!!! I may even put up some of the voice tracks for you.

Oh...and just wait until you see SPAWN himself!

Enjoy, Todd

Todd McFarlane's Spawn (1997) - There is a war going on between heaven and hell. Earth is the battlefield. Human souls are the prize. On the front lines, where good and evil collide, is a soldier in search of his past and his future: Spawn. HBO presents this groundbreaking animated series based on the mega-successful comic-book series. Combining fantastic imagery with action, romance, and high-level espionage, Season 1 of the series introduces Spawn, formerly known as Al Simmons — a CIA hit man whose death causes him to seal a deal with the devil so that he can return to his wife Wanda. Instead, the devil transforms him into "hell-spawn," a dark warrior who battles the forces of evil on Earth—and in himself—to uncover the truth about his identity and fulfill his destiny.

I'd dig a new Spawn movie... just don't let MacFarlane write it. His writing has improved, but it's still horrible.

I enjoyed the old Spawn series for what it was, it seems a bit redundant at this point to make another animated series though. I'll check it out though. If they do make it, they MUST bring back Keith David as Spawn. He was brilliant in that role.

Hell yeah!
As good as it is to have a new animated series, those guys are right! When do we see a Spawn movie reboot? The old one was okay, but it's time to make a new one with today's technology.

Good find, Nail!

I would say heel to the yeah, but Todd is the biggest tease in the business. Though this does seem to be a lot further than the script he's been working on for a decade. I'll even settle for Jim at this point.

I've been waiting for this for too damn long. [frick] McFarlane. Let it go at this point.

I'd love an open world video game though where the story takes place over books 1 - 100

I read Spawn 1- 100 and stopped. During that time I developed a few opinions.

More Angels

More Demons

Sam and Twitch are totally boring

After reading the first 33 issues of ShadowHawk I'm gonna try getting into Spawn. Already have a few issues :)

Also, that character art looks kinda Greg Capullo like. I'm guessing that's the main source of inspiration.

Hasn't a new Spawn animated series been in development since 2005? I'm sure I will see this show and the new movie never because neither of them will ever get made. Considering how popular comic book movies are today, it's a shame it won't happen.

The character would be better off if McFarlane just sold the film rights to a studio. I have no confidence in him writing and directing the film.

I miss when HBO did animated works. Marvel should open up a mature animated HBO sector. Punisher cartoon...maybe blade too. Daredevil as well.

Spawn cartoon was ok. The film was crap. I keep reading interviews that Todd McFarlane wants to do the definitive Spawn film. You're rich so do it

@fortycals You cracked me up talking about MacFarlane and his bullshitting ass ways. The next live action Spawn will be directed by Guillermo Del Toro and that would be the apex of CBM blue balls.

He's been teasing the new series for quite awhile now. "Spawn Animated" (I think is what it was called) was supposedly close to finishing production like five years ago. I don't know if its been all the legal stuff with Gaiman that's been holding this up, but when I see a trailer & a release date, I'll believe it. Otherwise, this is just more concept pieces.

i'm tired of all the unnecessary reboots (Foxtastic Four, The Not So Amazing Spider-Man) but if it's one comic book character that needs a reboot being that it's been long enough since he made his crappy debut in 1997 it's freaking Spawn.

You know its disappointing that all these years that one movie dropped and nothin else really came after but outside the toy money he couldve come up more with with numerous movie projects! Its not too late but why now all of a sudden?

@McFarlaneFan

Why is Gaiman a "bitch"? He (unlike the families of other comic artists and creators) actually CREATED the characters he went to court over. McFarlane tried the same shit that he condemned Marvel and DC for (taking other artists' work and claiming "work for hire"). I don't see a thing wrong with what Gaiman did. It wouldn't have been necessary if McFarlane hadn't tried to [frick] him over.

Todd- if your reading this. Huge Spawn fan.
Spawn needs a new live action movie. And 'can' the cheap bogey man angle. No one wants to see a small time studio horror. Why would you scale down a film with so much potential, where comic films are so large right now?
