Kevin Feige On The Current Marvel 'Safety Net', ELEKTRA And More

Over the last few days, Collider has been posting snippets of their interview with Marvel Studios President Kevin Fegie and now they've posted the interview in full which contains a few new pieces of info. Probably the most interesting new subject concerns Elektra and whether the character returned to Marvel Studios along with Daredevil. Said Feige, "Electra is part of the Daredevil contract, I believe. I believe, don’t quote me on that, I’d have to check with legal and it would take a long time and I’d have to get on the phone with business affairs, but I think she’s included under the Daredevil rights agreement." For those wondering, that's the closest we come to actual confirmation. While it would be a surprise to many to see the female anti-hero receive another solo film, she remains a very important asset for any potential new film plans for Daredevil.

Moving on to the current massive amount of fan appeal Marvel Studios and their characters are currently enjoying, Feige gave a pretty frank answer in his acknowledgement of the fact that the studio could pretty much put out anything and as long as the name Marvel is on it, people will go and see it. "It’s the characters and the franchise, and the current atmosphere of appreciation for our films with the moviegoing audience. In other words, if we release an Iron Man movie, no matter what people would come to the theater right now. That might be different in a few years from now but right now, if you put out a movie called Iron Man, if you put out a movie called “Marvel Blank” a certain amount of the moviegoing public is going to come to see it. That’s a huge safety net, which then means it’s not just about figuring out “what do people want to go see?” People want to go see what we have right now – thank goodness, and we never take that for granted because the winds could change at any moment. Which is why we say, “Okay, here’s this wonderful safety net. People want to come see our stuff, now we want that stuff to be interesting. We want them to be rewarded above and beyond just ‘oh, I want to see a suit flying around or I want to see somebody pick up a building.’” How do we make it more interesting than that? Not just for the audience, but for us." Can't argue with what Feige is saying here as Iron Man 3 is looking at final box office gross somewhere near $1B if box office trends hold true. There's just a smidgen more new content in Collider's info with Feige over at the site so click the source link below to read the article in full.

New Daredevil reboot is gonna be awesome. This is kinda out of the blue, but I'd like to see the yellow suit in there for a little bit.

That comes off a little arrogant... maybe they should pay the actors what they're asking, since they're the reason marvel is so bankable.

@AEStark, So the actors alone are the reason Marvel Studios is so bankable? No credit goes to the popular characters who have spent nearly 50 years building a fanbase, Kevin Feige for developing and guiding these films, the screenwriters for writing the films or the directors for directing them? It's all because of the actors?

I want news on the REAL current ordeal going on with Marvel Studios -- Avengers 2. That whole thing reeks of conspiracy. Also, Cap 2 news wouldn't hurt.

Some people, they forget history and get their Ego inflated. Nothing stands still, everything moves in some shape of form. Today you are on the top of the mountain there is no assurance that will last forever.

This reminds me a bit of Micheal Bay, he always used to have a super-inflated ego about his movies because then came so easy for him in regards to success, then he made the Island and that made him come back down to Earth. After that Movie, I never heard his ego inflate so large.

Lets not forget that Marvel, has struggled for a very long time to bring their characters to the big screen. let not forget how we had three actors for the Hulk, three who played the Punisher etc.

Just like Disco, and other forms of pop culture it came and went, today a lot of people want to see comic characters but no chance everyone will forever.

There have been so many great comic book stories that came from Marvel but the chances of those great stories coming to the screen are almost Zero.

Finally, I am always happy to see the medium that I enjoy do well but I have never been a fan of arrogant people who make a few hits and think they are God gifts. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, to me are the true hero's when it comes to Marvel success, there are other of course but these two are my hero's

@Tech, are you trying to say The Island was a bad movie, I can't tell from your comment lol. (I don't thin it was, actually think it's Bay's best film so far).

I want a hawkeye movie that will feature Black widow as the Villain, he hunts her for several crimes (hospital burning) that her father made her do. Clint is tasked to take her down but when he finds out that her father is to blame, he decides to team up with her instead.

What do you think?

"We want them to be rewarded above and beyond just ‘oh, I want to see a suit flying around..."

...so instead we give them 20-30 suits flying around with no hero even in them.

@FreakingIntelligentRobertGriffin- I agree. They are getting into an area of "generic", and that's never good. It'd be nice to see a less "pop" take on stories. With that being said, I must give credit where credit is due. We've come a loooong way. I think a good Silver Surfer film, penned by Brian K. Vaughn, would be an amazing movie... I'd like it to shy away from anything Earth-related until the classic after-credit cut scene. I don't wanna see how the Surfer relates to comedians on Earth(I'm looking at you original THOR), I'd like us to understand how the Surfer relates to the Universe. My two cents...

i would love to see an r-rated daredevil & punisher movie, but its f*ckin hard for an r-rated movie to make its money back unless its low budget or has a name attached to it like tarantino or scorsese.

i say keep it to the same level of violence as the dark knight & see those dollars come flooding in.

That's exactly what I was saying yesterday, Feige just said it...if they make another Iron Man movie, people will just go to the theatre.
That's what MARVEL has been doing right, they have made their characters relevant to the general audiences.
I really hope DC can learn from that, and hopefully they did with Man of Steel.

"maybe they should pay the actors what they're asking, since they're the reason marvel is so bankable."

So, unknowns like Evans and Hemsworth are the reason that Marvel is so bankable?
ChubbyDeadpool
ChubbyDeadpool - 5/9/2013, 6:40 AM
y'know, you'd think that Marvel/Disney could take that $1 billion and maybe cut a cheque for $60 mil and get that R-rated Deadpool flick made. It would easily make back its money, and then some. Take a risk instead of churning out your 'safety nets'.
Fogs
Fogs - 5/9/2013, 7:04 AM
hope they pursue quality and don't get sloppy with this "safety net". And no, I don't think IM3 was bad.

If they did Daredevil in the near future, it'd be interesting to have Black Widow involved in one of the films.
musicsuperhero1
musicsuperhero1 - 5/9/2013, 7:51 AM
My only issue with this is there's no accountability. As a result, IM3 was sub-par. "We can slap Iron Man on it and people will go see it." explains IM3 to me. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed IM3 to a degree...but on the whole it was very sub-par. And if people are honest, and don't just defend it because it's Marvel and Iron Man...they'd admit that it wasn't as good as it could have/should have been. I'm not saying this to insight massive fanboy arguments...It's not a DC v Marvel thing (I love both to be honest)...I'm looking at it critically and as a fan of film/writing as a whole, then as a long-time reader of the source material. It underwhelmed and it had major problems. I must express genuine concern (especially in light of this article) that Marvel is getting 'too big for it's britches' so to speak.
TruBeliever
TruBeliever - 5/9/2013, 8:18 AM
CHUBBYDEADPOOL - Marvel/Disney do not own the film rights for Deadpool - that is currently a Fox property under the Xmen and related characters.
Supershadowbat
Supershadowbat - 5/9/2013, 8:24 AM
Would love to see a Daredevil reboot with a great Kingpin character. A movie like that could lead to a Daredevil/ Spiderman CBM, if Marvel ever gets Spideys rights back.
BrownandYellowWolvie
BrownandYellowWolvie - 5/9/2013, 8:26 AM
Iron man 3 was NOT subpar. Fanboys are just crying over the Mandarin. If you look at what he said,

"We want them to be rewarded above and beyond just ‘oh, I want to see a suit flying around or I want to see somebody pick up a building.’” How do we make it more interesting than that? Not just for the audience, but for us."

So they delved deeper into Tony's story and made IM3 a character piece, not just an explosions everywhere type movie. That's why he was OUT of the suit most of the time.

seriously, can't make everyone happy....
