According to Deadline, Melissa McCarthy (Ghostbusters) and Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip) have signed on to star in New Line Cinema and DC’s The Kitchen.

The project is an adaptation of a 2014 DC Vertigo comic book series from Ollie Masters and Ming Doyle, which tells the story of a group of Irish mob wives in Hell’s Kitchen in the 1970s who take over the business when their husbands are sent down by the FBI.

Though McCarthy and Haddish' involvement might suggest a comedic tone, this big-screen take is described as a "gritty drama."

The Kitchen will be written and helmed by Straight Outta Compton scribe Andrea Berloff, who is making her directorial debut.

Hmmmmm.... Well, I like Melissa and Tiffany is having a great year but I don't think she's that funny...

Sounds like it could be "dark" but more of a comedy still. We'll see I guess.

@PrincessLeather - I haven't seen Girls Trip but everyone said Tiffany was the best thing ever. Saw her present the Oscar nominations though and she was so cringy... Melissa McCarthy is funny in the right roles but not if she's just screaming all the time...

Just read the premise in more detail online - it's definitely about women in power (which will go over well with...I don't want to use the acronym lol I'll be polite) but with these two I feel they could definitely give a more real approach to it. Comedy is borne through trauma as a means to cope and I can bet Haddish and McCarthy could deliver on that.

It's refreshing to see DC take this approach, although my real hope for their Elseworlds universe is to have an R-Rated horror/revenge-thriller in The Spectre.

I would be so incredibly shocked if this didn’t have a heavily comedic tone.
