Jensen Ackles spent a huge part of his career starring in Supernatural, but with the series now at an end, he's looking to reinvent himself. That was evident from his role as Soldier Boy in The Boys, while the actor is also quickly emerging as a fan-favourite Batman voice actor.
While it's no secret that Ackles was once eyed for the role of Captain America in the MCU, that wasn't the only big superhero character he missed out on bringing to life on screen.
You probably don't need us to tell you that Ryan Reynolds first played Deadpool in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, though 20th Century Fox completely dropped the ball on the Merc with the Mouth's portrayal. Thankfully, the actor eventually found redemption, reprising the role in 2016's Deadpool to widespread acclaim and huge box office success.
However, Deadpool was a character Ackles also came close to playing once upon a time.
"There was definitely a movie that I was very much in talks about. I wasn't available, so the train just kind of stopped there," he recalled during a recent appearance at SPN PHX J2 (via Screen Rant). "But, had I been available, I would've had to, you know, jump through the studio hoops and jump through the, you know, producer hoops and stuff."
"But I had a really good shot, and it's a movie that I really, really like. [What was the movie?] Deadpool. It was probably a good thing because my ex-girlfriend was on there and so that probably would have been awkward, so it probably worked out for the best. I think that whole cast was amazing. I probably would've messed that up for a lot of people had I been a part of it, so probably best I didn't. But that would've been cool."
We're guessing this would have been for X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a movie released when Ackles was already a good few seasons into Supernatural. Along with Captain America, The Boys star also had to turn down the chance to play Hawkeye in Thor, proving just how committed he was to Dean Winchester.
Do you think Ackles would have made a good Deadpool?
