Disney's Divisive SNOW WHITE Remake Hasn't Been Canceled But It May End Up Being Delayed

Disney's upcoming live-action remake of Snow White has split opinions, but despite reports it's been scrapped, we can confirm that's not the case. However, we don't actually know when it will be released!

If you use social media, there's a very good chance you've recently seen claims that Disney's live-action version Snow White has been scrapped. Unrelated comments from lead star Rachel Zegler have already been manipulated to create more ill-feeling towards the movie and a misinformation campaign appears to be part of that.

It all started when a parody site, MouseTrap News, posted a story claiming the studio had pulled the plug on this controversial remake. Unaware that it was meant in jest, thousands of people have flocked to X and TikTok to declare victory in their war against, er, Snow White.

Despite what you might have seen, Snow White has not been cancelled by Disney

While the movie has definitely divided opinions, there's simply no way the studio is going to scrap a movie they've spent hundreds of millions of dollars on because of social media backlash.

However, in former Hollywood Reporter editor Matt Belloni's latest Puck newsletter, he suggests the movie - currently scheduled for March 22, 2024 - will "almost certainly move off that date."

Belloni expects a lot of changes to Disney's 2024 slate as a result of the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, and if Deadpool 3 moves from its current May 3, 2024 slot, that could be where Snow White ultimately lands.

Given the recent negative reaction to this latest take on the iconic fairy tale, there's a good chance Disney is planning reshoots. Either way, the recent news that Dune: Part Two has shifted from November 3 to March 15 could also be a major contributing factor.

Ultimately, Disney may have misjudged their approach to this property when it came to modernising the story. While there are problematic elements which needed to be changed (similar to The Little Mermaid), such a drastic reinvention definitely risks alienating longtime fans.

Very little has been revealed about director Marc Webb's (The Amazing Spider-Man) Snow White plans, though we know the screenplay was written by Barbie director Greta Gerwig and playwright Erin Cressida Wilson.

What we can confidently say is the movie is still being released! We're just not 100% sure when.

@Gabimaru - I seriously can't wait until the trailer drops and it becomes clear that the lighting tests y'all shit your pants over are nowhere to be found in the finished product.

I think I dislike Zegler more than Larson and that is saying something.

Well at least I can rewatch the animated classic if I choose to,I think I've only seen it once.

"It was revealed in August 2021 that filming would take place in the UK from March to July 2022. Gadot announced that she had finished filming her sequences on April 22, 2022. Zegler then confirmed that the filming of Snow White concluded on July 13, 2022."

Movie is in post production, unless it's so bad that disney just prefer to give up on it, I don't see why it would be canceled.

Delayed, yeah of course, the entire industry's release schedule is going to be moved up 6 months

Iger is cancelling films deep into post production like the spiderwick chronicles. I wouldn't hate if he cuts the budget and dumps this on d+.

Iger is slashing alot of stuff at Disney and this is one project I wouldn't mind losing💁

@TheLight - Maybe they'll go back and cgi little people over the hobos...like do a reverse George Lucas in THX-1138. 🤪

@TheLight - I mean, they basically have to reshoot the entire film to avoid this being Sand Beige and the 7 Climate Change Activists.

Delays are inevitable at this point for lots of movies. Canceling Snow White absolutely is not going to happen though.

To me, it’s a really greedy and cowardly decision to try to bank off existing titles while feeling ashamed of them at the same time. It’s one thing to change a problematic element here and there, but what they’ve done is completely bastardized this movie to point that it’s same in name only. Instead of spending so much on each project, find creative, talented directors who can get a lot out of a smaller budget. That way, they could take some risks on some original scripts and not be so concerned about each film making $1B.

@HAILHYDRA - but couldn't you say that about the first film? The initial story is basically a horror piece. So one is ok, but not the other?

They wanted it to be divisive.

Peter pan came out and no one even heard about that movie.

Iger is slowly but surely getting control over the shit-fest that Disney-as-a-Hobby has become. Too much value has been destroyed these last few years.

The problem with viewing these works as "problematic" and needing to be changed for a "modern audience" is being able to understand why it was so beloved in the first place.

The idea that there is such a thing as a strong female character who serves as a motherly figure and finds happiness in a relationship with a man is something Hollywood doesn't view as acceptable. And you can even see this in how Rachel promoted the film.

Now you don't have to like those morals. But they are at the heart of the film. Changing that is just changing the entire story. You don't like that? DONT F@#$ING REMAKE IT THEN!

My God. Why is it so complicated?
Feralwookiee
Feralwookiee - 8/27/2023, 9:33 PM
@Origame - Because they need the original IP's name to get asses in seats.

It's essentially a bait and switch with most of these remakes. They change most of the races and genders, story elements, and plot points often intentionally undermining the original morals and meanings.
If you come out and say you don't like all the changes they've made to this classic story, you will be shouted down in the internet court of public opinion as "racist" "sexist" "somethingaphobe" ad naseum.

The studio sees it as a win-win either way. If the movie makes tons of money they get to say, "see, people love our modern spin on classic tales". If the movie fails they get to virtue signal and say the movie only failed because America is so "racist" "sexist" "somethingaphobic" and we're so great for bringing attention to it.

You gotta them credit; most younger Americans at this point have been indoctrinated and dumbed down enough to actually fall for this shit.
