Toy Story 5 Eyes Record-Breaking Opening Weekend - But It May Be Bad News For Supergirl

Toy Story 5 is on course to have the franchise's biggest ever opening weekend, but good news for Pixar may be disastrous for Supergirl, which swoops into theaters just one week later.

There's a huge amount of excitement for Toy Story 5, and all signs point to it being the biggest movie of the year so far (at least until Spider-Man: Brand New Day comes along).

According to Deadline—via Toonado.com—current estimates point to the next Toy Story movie opening with $150 million in North America. That would be a record-breaking first weekend, topping Toy Story 4's $120.9 million haul in 2019 by some margin. Some believe it could even go as high as $175 million.

That figure would also give Toy Story 5 the biggest opening of 2026, easily beating The Super Mario Galaxy Movie's impressive $131.7 million.

Good news for Disney is potentially bad news for DC Studios. Supergirl opens one week after Toy Story 5, and even if the Pixar movie drops by 60+%, it's doubtful that the Maid of Might's movie can debut at #1. In fact, it may be steamrolled by Woody and the gang.

In related news, you may recall reports about Taylor Swift's website being updated with a countdown that featured a strikingly similar background to the iconic cloud wallpaper featured in the Toy Story franchise. It was quickly pulled, and Swifties have so far been unable to deduce what it meant.

The prevailing theory was that Swift might have composed and sung a song for Toy Story 5's soundtrack, but with the movie less than a month away from arriving in theaters, we've seen nothing to suggest that's the case.

In a recent interview with Khoslaa, directors Andrew Stanton and McKenna "Kenna" Harris were asked if the singer-songwriter has any involvement with the movie. Producer Lindsey Collins chimed in first, saying, "We did see it. We saw it. We had never seen it before, and it surprised us. We'd be freaking honoured."

Stanton, meanwhile, added, "The sad truth is we watched the movie being mixed last week done and the song at the end of that was not a Taylor Swift song."

There's really no reason to keep Swift's involvement under wraps at this point. So, unless Pixar wants it to be a surprise (which seems unlikely, given that her being officially announced in any capacity would boost interest), it seems she's not part of Toy Story 5.

The toys are back in Disney and Pixar's Toy Story 5, and this time it’s Toy meets Tech. Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), Jessie (Joan Cusack) and the rest of the gang's jobs are challenged when they come face-to-face with Lilypad (Greta Lee), a brand-new tablet device that arrives with her own disruptive ideas about what is best for their kid, Bonnie. Will playtime ever be the same?

The movie is directed by Academy Award winner Andrew Stanton, co-directed by Kenna Harris, produced by Lindsey Collins, p.g.a., and written by Stanton and Harris from a story by Stanton. The film features an original score by Oscar-winning Randy Newman, who to the franchise with Toy Story 5. The movie arrives in theaters on June 19.

and then people wonder why they are making a 5th one....

@Urubrodi - for me, not at all. The characters are so beloved and want to see where the charactes stories go. I also thought the fourth one wasn’t as good as the third one so this one can be a redemption movie for the last one. These movies can be enjoyed by adults but the movies aren’t made for adults and unfortunately, some people don’t get that.

@epc1122 - Yeah. I saw this idiot on World of Reel going off on how bad he thought the fourth movie is.

I’m like — my kids loved it. You’re like 40 and complaining about stuff not meant for you.

Adults can obviously enjoy it but to spend time getting so mad about kids content is ridiculous.

@thedrudo - completely agree. Kids get cancer, there’s murder, gun violence, and yet people are upset there’s a fifth Toy Story. People need to get some perspective. It’s pretty sad and pathetic.

Best looking thing about Supergirl is Lobo and more Krypto. otherwise who asked for this? I guess DC is still trying to distance themselves from Snyderverse? So they went in a direction that was not Justice League territory? Even though we got a Justice Corps version in superman?
im confused.
DC always does this. Even in the comics they cant have a one tract story. Then the main line gets lost in all the BS.
Should have went with the rebooted Wonder Woman for their next...

If this happens to Supergirl I will be highly upset with James Gunn. He did the same thing with Superman coming out a week before Fantastic 4. The DCU is on a rebuilding mission and he's not giving this films the chance to breath and make money.

@Steel86 - I mean , the summers crowded this year..

Where would you have put it?.

Maybe August could work given there no real big movies coming out then (for the most part) but kids begin going back to school too then so that might not work either.

Also , it’s the executives and such who decide the release date so it’s Warners decision , not just Gunn’s.

@TheVisionary25 - James Gunn in the Warner Brothers Discovery Paramount Skydance boardroom:

"Gentlemen, I will hear no more argument. This movie MUST be released the weekend after Toy Story 5. I will not entertain any other options."

One of the most wealthy and powerful men in the world, closely connected to the president of the united states, looks on with despair. "Whatever you say, Mr Gunn, sir."

Gunn has NO DIRECTION OR VISION. His DC for dummies suck! The casual movie goer isn’t a DC FAN! At least Zack Snyder is a huge Fan of the DC Comics and characters. His costumes, origin stories & mythology are epic. The Batman fight scene in the warehouse on BvS is THE BEST scenes of Batman fighting on screen or cartoons! Paramount is paying attention. Zack post a pic of his DCU & it breaks the internet. While Gunn can’t get any interest in his Supergirl movie. Lol. Now doubling down & putting her in Man Of Tomorrow. You have Superman, Supergirl & Krypto together all these Kryptonians in one movie & they’re still WEAK! 😆 Superman is supposed to be the strongest etc but NOT in Gunns Universe. It’s Mr. Terrific and Lex😆😆😆😂😂😂

I find it interesting that you get these online comments & such that Toy Story should have ended after 3 but the box office is telling a different story for this franchise given the previous installment made a billion and this might too…

Anyway , I fully expect this to be the highest grossing movie of the summer and likely of the year aswell (or atleast one of them that is).

Also I think Supergirl could do decent but it being sandwiched between Toy Story 5 & Minions is definitely cause for concern!!.

DC should have moved from this release date a long time ago. Hard to compete with those timeless toys.

I'd say it's actually counter programming if anything. They probably should have delayed this till the end of July beginning of august. But the main problem is there are so many good movies coming out this year that there really isn't a place to put something on its own to make money. Once again it doesn't matter as long as the movie is good.

Nobody cares for Supergirl; the movie just looks bland and generic. If the movie is good, not a lot of people are going to see it.

I think we all understand at this point that Supergirl is not going to be a monster hit. Too many insecure white men out there can't handle a female protagonist these days.
