DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS: A Huge Cameo Rumor May Have Finally Been Debunked - SPOILERS

There have been rumblings for some time now that we could see the Superior Iron Man in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, potentially played by an A-List actor. Alas, it may not happen after all!

By JoshWilding - Apr 24, 2022 01:04 PM EST

When the first trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was released, fans spotted a character they were sure might be the Superior Iron Man. With rumours swirling that Tom Cruise might make a cameo appearance as a Variant Tony Stark (the actor was eyed to play the Armored Avenger by Paramount Pictures in the mid-2000s), it's a theory that was pretty easy to get on board with.

Recent footage has instead pointed to the character being a Captain Marvel Variant - likely Maria Rambeau - but we continue to hear chatter about Cruise potentially showing up as Iron Man.

A darker Tony being part of the Illuminati wouldn't shock us, and Cruise playing him would be pretty freaking cool. Unfortunately, GWW's KC Walsh, a relatively trustworthy scooper, has taken to Twitter to suggest that there's "zero" chance we see the actor suit up as Iron Man in this sequel.

With Sir Patrick Stewart's return as Professor X all but confirmed, we've no doubt Marvel Studios still has plenty of surprises planned for us in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Some have possibly leaked online, though extensive reshoots that took place late last year are believed to have added a number of cameos that were likely absent from those early test screenings.

We may not find out for sure until we sit down to watch the movie in theaters, though there have been rumblings that a full list of cameos could surface online before then. We'll keep you updated.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness arrives in theaters on May 6.

@GhostDog - It would’ve been cool to see on screen in cameo capacity, but that screenshot was definitely a Maria Lambeau variant that became Captain Marvel instead of Carol

I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin'.

There was a time when Ultron took over Tony. Ultron Tony makes more sense than Extremis Tony considering the overarching narrative.

Tom as Tony wasnt a Bad idea but id rather have an Illuminati Made up of previous non-mcu movies characters like Patrick's Xavier or gruffud's reed

You’re more likely to get Edward Norton to reprise the Hulk than to get Tom Cruise to do a wink-wink about a role he lost out on in the biggest movie franchise in history.

What was the basis of this rumor in the first place? Hopium?

@Havenless - Huh? Did you say Hopium? Do you know a guy? Maaaann I could sure use some Hopium right now. C'mon man, hook a brother up! I need that shit!! I need not just Tom cruise as Iron Man, but Hugh Jackman back, Rebecca Romijn, Ian McKellan, Evan Peters as Ralph, Pietro, AND Peter, Ioan Gufflold AND John Krasinski as dueling Reed Richards in an Illuminati snake pit. C'Mon man! But NO JLaw Mystique! You hear me? NO JLaw Mystique! That's a bad trip right there. I mean I swear her forehead gets bigger every time I look at it. Just look at it. It's growing right before my eyes. Bad trip! Bad trip!

@Havenless - A lot of the stuff Marvel is doing in Phase 4 is real dream-factory stuff. Nobody thought Maguire or Garfield would suit up again or Patrick Stewart would ever be Charles again or that Raimi would jump back into the big CBM game, yet here we are.

So, it's not crazy to speculate about a similar kind of Willy Wonka wishes getting granted in by-far the biggest Multiverse vehicle. And especially with there being a clear Illuminati vibe to whatever is happening here. (And I think it does invite the question of who will be Tony Stark or in that Stark role. The lowest-hanging fruit is probably Paul Bettany as Ultron, but it could still go any number of ways.)

The iron man character has been retired for physical appearances for at least a few more years. Chill

@TheShape9859 - I did. I figured it would be a fun little cameo that he might’ve considered doing. But I don’t think Marvel would be able to keep that rumor under wraps.

As much fun as it would be to see actors that originally were eyed for roles appear, I rather just see actors that actually played them appear again. Forget Krasinski as Cap (or even as Reed) and Cruise as Iron Man, and just get me Gruffadd as Reed and Mount as Black Bolt instead
