DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Poster Hides The Movie's Secret Villain In Plain Sight

We're not sure how we missed this, but one eagle-eyed fan has taken a closer look at the recently released Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness poster and found yet another sinister villain...

By JoshWilding - Feb 21, 2022 04:02 PM EST

There's been heaps of speculation that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' big bad will be Shuma-Gorath. However, with that villain seemingly renamed Gargantos and used as a misdirect in the movie's trailers, it's looking increasingly likely that the Scarlet Witch is the true big bad.

Well, unless there's an even bigger bad.

One eagle-eyed fan on Twitter has taken a closer look at the Doctor Strange sequel's latest poster and discovered a monstrous creature that looks an awful lot like Chthon, the Elder God and Archdemon of Chaos. In the Marvel Universe, he's also the author of the Darkhold, a book we last saw Wanda Maximoff taking a deep dive into during WandaVision's spooky post-credits scene.

Chthon is also responsible for the creation of many dark creatures such as Witches, Werewolves, and Vampires, so his debut could explain the supernatural route the MCU is about to head down in everything from Blade to Moon Knight and Werewolf-by-Night.

At this rate, it does seem more likely that this Elder God is manipulating Wanda rather than Gargantos/Shuma-Gorath, and he definitely looks suitably terrifying. Marvel Studios also included Captain Carter's shield on the poster, so we'd bet on this meaning something big for the movie.

Marvel Studios will conjure Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness into theaters on May 6.

People have been saying the name Chthon since Wandavision premiered. So it's not a surprise I guess. I wonder if in the bigger scheme Wandavision is a sort of prologue to DSMoM. It'll be the first time that the TV shows have fed back into the movies as oppose to the other way around (that I can remember).

Feige using the shows as a tool for world building as well as giving us at-home serial entertainment. The man's a master.

@TheManWithoutFear - there was a scene in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. that set up the opening of Age of Ultron. The agents discovered a secret Hydra compound and Coulson called Maria Hill. She said "you know what this means?" He responded with "yep. Time to call in the Avengers."

Also in Wandavision, Monica being called away at the end is a setup for The Marvel's.

I don't know of any other instances.

@TheManWithoutFear - I know that I've said this in other posts, so if I'm repeating myself I apologize. But I recall reading a couple of years ago that at Marvel Studios HQ they have a "war room" (just think big conference room for those of us that work in offices (or used to before COVID anyway)) with like an entire wall where Kevin & Co. have mapped out the various movies, TV shows, etc. with at least the main characters, through 2028 (and this was a couple of years ago that I read this). So if this is true (which I have no reason to believe that it's not), that means that Kevin & Co. have this stuff mapped out probably for the rest of the decade by now.

So with that in mind, WV being a prologue to DSMoM? Most likely. Chthon, the Darkhold, werewolves, vampires, Moon Knight, Blade, etc.all springing out of this? Most likely. I mean, GotG cracked upon the cosmic side of Marvel and that ultimately lead us to the IF Saga. So to think that WV, DSMoM, etc. is not the start of something big for Marvel is (in my opinion) just plain silly. Damn, what I wouldn't give to get a look at that wall, if it really exists... ;)

@tBHzHomer - Also Coulson gave Fury the hellicarrier to rescue people off of Sokovia.

@TheManWithoutFear - I always thought that was the point of these shows. Seems obvious after watching them that they are setting things up for later use in the movies.

I'm usually skeptical about anything regarding an MCU movie until i watch the movie, i rather be surprised even if i might be lying to myself lol

That said, it'd be so [frick]ing sick to finally have Chthon in live action.

I heard that it's supposed to be Shuma-Gorath but Marvel can't use the name because he is a Conan villain and Netflix owns the rights to Conan.

Isn't that the cover of the Darkhold? I mean, it would make sense for his face to be on the cover of it, though.

I've been hoping for Chthon and the rest of the Elder Gods for a while now, so it would be sweet to see him. Hope they don't tie Chthon to all manner of creatures though. Leave that tampering to the Celestials

Wanda is the villain, this is the worst kept secret since Andrew and Tobey being in NWH.
And please, no "Wanda is being manipulated", they spent 7 years and several movies and TV shows to get to this point...Wanda is a tragic villain, having her being manipulated by a magical being would ruin her whole arc.

@TheHumanSpider2 - Agreed. The Darkhold prophecy they mention in Wandavision seals that fate. Hope they stick to it.
