ETERNALS Director Chloé Zhao Says Dane Whitman Post-Credits Scene "Sets Up So Much"

The post-credits scene of Marvel's Eternals saw Dane Whitman (Kit Harington) embrace his destiny by reaching for the Ebony Blade, while also introducing a certain Daywalker (off-screen).

Marvel's Eternals introduced Dane Whitman (Kit Harington) to The MCU, and while Sersi's love interest only had about 10 minutes of screen-time in total, the post-credits scene teased big things to come for the character.

The stinger saw Whitman reach for the Ebony Blade, setting up his eventual transformation into the Black Knight. Before he could lay his hand on the sword, however, an off-screen voice warned him about the dangers of wilding the blade. We'd later find out that this was actually the MCU debut of Mahershala Ali's Blade.

There's been a lot of speculation relating to what this scene was setting up. We know Ali will lead the upcoming Blade reboot, but will we see the Daywalker team with the Black Knight? A recent casting breakdown indicated that Dr. Faiza Hussain may also be joining the fray, which could open the door to MI13, Excalibur, and the further exploration of the fantasy/horror corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

We're going to have to wait and see what Kevin Feige and co. have in store, but director Chloé Zhao did confirm that the stinger "sets up so much" while speaking with production visual effects supervisors Stephane Ceretti and Mårten Larsson for the film's Blu-ray audio commentary.

Here's the exchange (via MCU Direct).

Chloé Zhao: "Ebony Blade, who would have thought. I definitely geek out quite a bit, especially when the voice that comes in the end."

Mårten Larsson: "It's just a cool post-credits scene. Simple, but sets up so much."

Chloé Zhao: "Sets up so much... And, I love this effect they use on the sword so much. Did we use... Was it sand magnets?"

Stephane Ceretti: "It was magnetic ferrite... I think it's cool."

Chloé Zhao: "Yeah, the idea of a blood curse, how to show that."

Zhao doesn't give much away here, but it sounds like she has some idea of what's to come for these characters, which could mean she's going to be involved in some way moving forward.

The effect on the sword was cool. Had an eerie movement to it.

@BlackBeltJones - after FINALLY finishing the film, I'll never watch it again, though I did enjoy what they set up, and the thing I'm left with most after is the promise of what's to come from the post credit scenes.

It is telling when the best scenes in your movie were the mid-credits scene and the end-credits scene.

Too bad they botched the whole thing

Honestly, having finally watched it on D+ a few nights ago, this really wasn’t bad. It has problems but aside from my gripes with casting and some of the character decisions (why would the Celestials create a deaf Eternal?) it was pretty internally consistent from what I could tell. Definitely better than the Shaun-Chi and Katy show, which was dogshit.

@Kurban - Maybe she was "damaged" in previous missions - BUT then she could've been healed too, so... Yeah, you're spot on.

@Kurban - I thought it had something to do with her powers maybe. Like they designed her that way so it wouldn’t hurt her when she hit higher speeds like Mach 1

@Mikel9608 - If that was explained in the movie, that'd be an acceptable answer. As is, there is no explanation.

@Kurban - oh yea for sure. I was just saying that was my assumption. Makes sense and it helps differentiate from all the speedsters Marvel and DC has. Realistically I think you’d have hearing loss for sure, being at the epicenter of sonic booms on a regular and all.

@Mikel9608 - Oh sure, which is why I'm fine with that answer. I just wish it was said in the movie. And it's even worse because we have another example of a speedster in Quicksilver who didn't have that problem, so it just makes it look like the Celestials created Makkari with hearing loss for no discernable reason. Like Sprite being made like a child makes sense in order for her to integrate with children if need be. But deaf people are a much smaller percentage of the population, and if they're gonna go so far as create a deaf Eternal to make up for that group, why not a blind Eternal? Or a one-armed Eternal? An Eternal with an anxiety disorder? The questions start piling up over one dumb writing decision, even something that's relatively small.

@Kurban - like having a child, a man, a loner, a woman, people of color... they all represent aspects of society they will interact with and therefore will blend in easier than if they were all of a single male superhero stereotype... remember their primary purpose is to groom the planet's intelligent life.. and to do so need to interact with it at various levels..
