Eternals director Chloé Zhao has made no secret of her love for all things Star Wars in the past, but could we see the Academy Award-winning filmmaker take a trip to the galaxy far, far away at some point in the future?
During an interview with Empire, Zhao was asked if she'd be interested in helming a Star Wars movie now that she's had a taste of working on a major studio franchise film, and gave a very interesting response.
"Hmmmm. I have to tread very carefully with what I say here. [laughs] Yes. Let’s just say, it’s a world I have so much reverence for because it was such an important part of my life."
Maybe we're reading too much into this, but Zhao's comments would seem to suggest that she has had, or is currently engaged in discussions with Disney/Lucasfilm about potentially directing a Star Wars project. At least, we can't think of any other reason why she'd need to "tread carefully." Then again, maybe she's simply hoping to land an opportunity and doesn't want to jinx it!
We do know that Zhao has a sci-fi western take on Dracula (which we can't wait to hear more about) lined up for Universal, so even if she is in talks to helm a Star Wars movie, it'll probably be a while before she's free to get to work on the project. We might just get an official announcement soon enough, however.
What do you guys make of this? Let us know in the usual place. Eternals is set to hit theaters on November 5.
