FAN FIC: Updated Rules & Regulations On Posting

FAN FIC: Updated Rules & Regulations On Posting

What constitutes fan-fic? What can and cannot be posted in that section? There has been some confusion over this in the past, so as the new fan-fic moderator I thought I would lay out the basics for anyone planning on posting..

For those who don't know, several weeks ago Jim/Galactus/Big G asked me if I would be interested in being the Fan-Fic moderator. I graciously accepted because I had noticed that the Fan-Fic section was littered with poorly written, half-assed work. After a few hiccups, the process seems to be working fine and I have gotten some feedback, good and bad, about it. But a lot of users still seemed confused about what constitutes as Fan-Fic.

1. What qualifies as Fan-Fic material?
Obviously anything based off a comic book (Batman, Spider-Man, Archie, Nemesis, etc.) counts. If it is something that at some point and time has been a comic book (Tim Tebow, The Expendables, Django Unchained, etc.) then it also counts. If it is something related to what we cover on the site (Game of Thrones, The Hunger Games, Mission: Impossible) then in most cases that could count too.

2. What exactly is acceptble stuff to post?
Fancasts, where you cast the characters for a film and/or tv series.
-Fancasts must contain the following: pictures of both the actors AND the characters. It is preferred that the pictures be together, like this,

Beast-Joel Edgerton

but it is not required. It just makes it look better. You MUST also have descriptions for why you chose the actors you did. Example (from MrBlueSky's Iron Man fancast):

That is how you give a description. NOT one like this: "He's a good actor. He could do it."....that is not a description. That's an uninformative statement.

Fan scripts are also acceptable, as long as it falls within the criteria of Question #1 (scroll up if you forgot). The main rules for the scripts are: a) if you post it within the article (and not an embedded script) SPACE OUT YOUR PARAGRAPHS. No one is going to read a mass cluster of words. Spacing helps A LOT. B) No more posting stories in parts. Either post the entire story/script in one article or wait until you complete it to post it (in one article).

The third and final thing people post is fan art. The only rule for posting fan art is that you must post your own art, not someone else's you found through Google. If you feel compelled to post art that you find, post in Features, where another editor will decide if it's worth an article.

NO PREVIEWS OF UPCOMING WORK! Post the completed work only.

3. The Rest
If you post anything that only needs a little tweaking (you need descriptions, you need more pictures, etc.) here is what happens. I move the article to post on a later day, usually 3 or 4 days, depending on how much you need to change. I also send you an e-mail telling you what you need to change. When the artcile reposts itself, if you haven't made the neccasary changes, I'll again move the article ahead 3-4 days and e-mail you again. If it still doesn't have the needed changes, I will delete the article. It's not my fault if you don't check your e-mail. You have to give us one when you sign up for a reason.

DO NOT STEAL OTHER PEOPLE'S WORK. A few weeks ago someone posted a fancast and all their pictures had been made by MrBlueSky. The article was immediatly pulled. If another user has a picture(s) you want to use, ASK THEIR PERMISSION FIRST. If you do not hear from them, move on.

DO NOT REPOST SOMETHING IF IT HAS BEEN DELETED. This also applies to something I've delayed. Do not repost it without the required adjustments or the article will be deleted.

I really enjoy reading people's work on here. We have a lot of talented users who contribute great stuff. I look forward to seeing what we get next. If you have any questions about anything discussed above or you think I forgot to adress something, please let me know in the comments below or e-mail me through the Contact Me tab on my profile. Cheers!

Nice rules, but why was my Tournament fan fic deleted? I was just listing what was going to go down, plus some new features. Why take that down?

I think some of the Fan-Casts are worthy enough for front page material. I think that should be looked at a bit more.

I agree with Ror. I cannot stand when people include images within the teaser. It looks tacky.

If I may suggest, if possible, for people to resample their images for the fan-fic. Since fan-fic articles usually contain alot of images, the higher the resolution of the images, the longer it takes to download the images. Sometimes these images are still downloading as I begin reading and then the page jumps and I have to scroll up/down to where I was reading. Resampling means to set the resolution of the image between 72 - 96 dpi (dots per inch). For those who have Photoshop, you can do this by going to "File" and clicking on "Save for Web & Devices" and then click on "JPEG" and then set the size and finally click on "Save".

@jpfola26: I get where you're coming from but we haven't had, at least in recent memory, a "100 page" fan-fic. most of the ones posted in parts are generally short and move down completed fan-fic.

Thank god we finally have a moderator of some sort. I'm tired of seeing terrible articles in Fan-Fic, especially the stuff that comes from Optimus83 (he is just terrible).

Thanks for giving me credit for the Hawkeye image and description. And have you checked out my Iron Man cast (if you haven't, click here to check it out).

Anyway, are you going to post any casts or fan-fics soon (you're a pretty good caster, if I say so myself)?
RunDTC
RunDTC - 8/29/2012, 11:37 AM
@MrBlueSky: I haven't looked at it in depth yet, I'll try to take a look at it later when I finish my other work. what I saw looked good.

I was actually able to recover a little bit of what I lost after my computer crashed. I lost all my work on the Batman reboot (and it was good if I do say so myself) but I was able to recover my MCU expansion. I should have around 100-150 yet to be casted characters but as a bonus, I've added in the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Spider-Man. so once I finish work on that, which will probably take another week or 2, I should have that up. then I'll restart my Batman fancast unless something strikes my fancy.

RunDTC, thanks for updating rules. It's good to know what passes and what doesn't. But two things

1. Based on what passes (and what doesn't) for a comic book, would Manga count as a comic? Because some people consider it. Some don't. So this may help clear up confusion.

2. The post your whole fanfic rule. It's a great rule. I'm not arguing with it. But I don't like it. I started working on a fanfic. Part one alone is 11 pages, because I'm trying to include all the details that would happen. I'll write the whole thing and publish it as one, but...that rule seems a little harsh.
RunDTC
RunDTC - 8/29/2012, 12:23 PM
1. I would say Manga counts. it's a comic book, right? so Manga is fine.

2. This is probably one of the harder things to figure out with fan-fic. A majority of the stuff that's posted in parts is short but in other cases, like yours, it would work better in parts....if you were to post it in parts, how many would it be do you think?
MCott
MCott - 8/29/2012, 12:30 PM
I'm not exactly sure. I don't have it planned out (like a lot of authors would). I'm making it up as I go along. My goal is to have it done in fine. I'm posting part 1 (or issue 1, keep it as close to a comic as possible) right now.

This is just my opinion, but I would try to put a word limit on it, Most word processors nowadays tell you how many words you've written.

I'm sorry, but when it comes to fancasts... While I can completely appreciate the time and effort someone puts into not only displaying photos for their various picks, but also giving an in-depth description of exactly why they chose the actor/actress for the character, I don't believe the ladder is a necessity. Has anyone ever read these reasons? They are basically going out and picking an actor/actress who looks the part and then completely making up reasons why they would be a good choice for the character. The reasons are often something along the lines of "I think so and so would be great for Beast because he is great in the movie Warrior and he is very versatile actor." Ok, well that great. But if your being honest about it, we can't really have that many valid reasons why the actor/actress is a good choice unless we are A.) Holding auditions in our basements or B.) We are typecasting them based on some similar role they have played before. I really don't mind if people want to write up a whole list of reasons why they think so is so great for a character to make their article look like they were up all night working on it, but I don't see any reason to hate on those who decide to skip this step. I'm fine looking at a pick and deciding for myself whether I think they are a good actor/actress.

RunDTC - 8/29/2012, 12:48 PM
@AbCdE....I'm not typing all that: I have not deleted an article simply because the pictures were not together. I may have added it as a secondary suggestion, but I have not deleted an article simply because the pictures weren't together.

I have no say in the matter if a fan-fic goes onto main. Galactus told me when I first started that he doesn't want fan-fic on main unless it's REALLY good. I believe getting a certain number of Thumbs Up may help. if I ever come across one that just blows my mind, I'll contact him and see what he has to sa

@LoudNoises: here's how I look at it: let's say you're talking with a friend and he says that The Godfather is boring and overrated but doesn't expound upon that. would your response be "OK, cool." or woul you ask him why he finds it boring? a lot of users like to know what the writer's reasoning is for it. it also helps it look better. an article of a bunch of pictures just seems lazy.

For tutorial of attaching two picture It really easy you could use a simple sotfware like paint or photoshop

@RunDTC

It may be just a perception of mine based on the vast majority of fancasts I've viewed that people give very bland generic reasons for their choices. There are of course exceptions. DDD for example always creates a great fancast. But I don't hold everyone to his standard because we have a lot of younger users on this site who love to partake in these activities. Most of the time I just skip all the reasons because I'm tired of reading that Michael Fassbender would be perfect for every comicbook character because he is a great actor. I guess my take on this is that if you have unique pick that requires an explanations, then by all means explain. But if your choosing someone who clearly is a fan favorite then don't bother humoring us with your pitiful reasons. Just write, "this guy looks like Bruce Wayne, nough said." lol. :p
