I never really thought about doing an Iron Man cast before, but I decided to do one since I'm tired of seeing the same generic casts being posted (e.g. Spider-Man, Batman). Anyway, I'm big fan of the Iron Man films, even the second one (it may not be as good as the first, but its still entertaining). Anyway, I hope you enjoy the cast:
Heroes:
Patrick Dempsey (
Grey's Anatomy,
Transformers: Dark of the Moon) as Tony Stark/Iron Man: A billionaire playboy, industrialist and ingenious engineer, who is the head of Stark Industries. He was injured in Afghanistan by one of his own weapons, and was captured by Al Qaeda, who forced him to make weapons for them. Along with fellow prisoner and medical researcher Ho Yinsen, they developed an electromagnet that hold the shrapnel that was nearing his heart in place, and then a suit of powered armor, which Stark used to escape. After he escaped, he started to develop more advanced versions of the suit and used them to better the world as Iron Man. The weapons systems of the suit have changed over the years, but Iron Man's standard offensive weapons have always been enhanced strength, flight, repulsor rays built into the palms of his gauntlets, pulse bolts (that pick up on kinetic energy along the way; so the farther they travel, the harder they hit), an electromagnetic pulse generator, a unibeam, and a defensive energy shield that can be extended up to 360 degrees. Other capabilities include creating and manipulating magnetic fields, and emitting sonic blasts.
Reason for Casting: Its nearly impossible to replace Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, and I've seen a lot of alternatives including Josh Brolin, Matt Bomer, and Jon Hamm. I prefer Patrick Dempsey. A lot of people want him as Doctor Strange, but I don't see it because he's too baby-faced and doesn't have the dark feel and look that Strange has. I was mainly inspired to cast him after seeing him in
Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Sure, that movie was a giant pile of shit, but he was one of the few actors who put effort into their performance. The movie proved he can play arrogantly intelligent characters. Plus he can pull off the dry, sarcastic humor, and has the looks of the handsome corporation owner Tony Stark.
Adrian Pasdar (
Carlito's Way,
Heroes) as Howard Stark: Tony's father, and the previous owner of Stark Industries. In his youth, Howard worked with an early version of the peace-keeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D. He constantly pushed Tony to be the best, telling him that someone must have "iron in their backbone" to be successful. Howard and his wife Maria were later killed in a plane crash. Tony then inherited the company and started a charity in his mother's name.
Reason for Casting: Pasdar voiced Iron Man in the English dub of
Marvel Anime and that god awful show
Ultimate Spider-Man. I think he would be good as Howard, and it was seeing him as Nathan Petrelli on
Heroes that sold me on casting him.
Jessica Chastian (
Take Shelter,
The Tree of Life) as Virginia "Pepper" Potts/Rescue: The secretary and personal assistant of Tony Stark and occasional love interest. After being wounded in an attack by Ezekiel Stane, she had to have several cybernetic implants installed to save her live. Tony later made her a suit of armor, the Mark 1616, and she uses it under the name Rescue. Due to the cybernetic implants, Pepper is given an increased her metabolism, gives her enhanced strength, reaction time and reflexes, and increased her IQ by about 25 points. To her request, Pepper's suit contains no weapons whatsoever, and is instead designed for “heavy rescue and recovery”. It contains repulsor technology, and electromagnetic field generators allowing her to suspend and tow massive loads and is powered by solar cells.
Reason for Casting: I've only seen Chastain in
The Debt and
The Tree of Life, but I can she's a wonderful actress and would be great as Pepper. I also think she'd have great chemistry with Dempsey.
Mark Valley (
Boston Legal,
The Human Target) as Harold "Happy" Hogan: A former boxer who had a history of losing fights, and was hired by Stark as his chauffeur and personal bodyguard after he saved his life.
Reason for Casting: A lot of people wanted Valley as Captain America, but he's gotten to old for the role. He's a pretty solid actor and I think he could give a more faithful take on Happy.
Morris Chestnut (
Boyz n the Hood,
Like Mike) as James "Rhodey" Rhodes/War Machine: A former Lieutenant Colonel in the Marine Corps and a friend of Stark, who pilots the War Machine Armor. The War Machine armor, a heavily armored version of the Iron Man armor, includes standard repulser rays and uni-beam generator. Its additional weapons include pulse bolt generators, retractable shoulder minigun, variable-configured double-barrel cannons on each gauntlet, gauntlet mounted flamethrower, plasma blade on the left gauntlet, missile box launcher, micro-rocket launcher, particle beam discharger, and an electromagnetic pulse generator in the unibeam projector that could shut down any electronic device in a 50-mile radius. The armor also includes a photon emitter that created a force shield, forcefield-based stealth technology, boot-jet propulsion, and a self-contained breathing system.
Reason for Casting: Chestnut is a great and pretty underrated actor who really needs a CBM rolem and I think War Machine works for him. he has the looks down and I think he'd work well with Dempsey.
Michael Biehn (
The Terminator,
Aliens) as Nick Fury: An experience soldier and director of the espionage organization S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division). Fury has been injected with a special serum called the Infinity formula that halts his aging. Fury is a seasoned unarmed and armed combat expert, was a heavyweight boxer in the army, and holds a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and a brown belt in Jiu Jitsu. Fury was trained as a paratrooper, Ranger, a demolitions expert, vehicle specialist (including aircraft and seagoing vessels), and a Green Beret.Fury has access to a wide variety of equipment and weaponry designed by S.H.I.E.L.D. technicians. He wears a S.H.I.E.L.D. uniform made of 9-ply Kevlar (able to withstand ballistic impact up to .45 caliber bullets) and a Beta Cloth (type C), a fire-resistant material, which has a kindling temperature of 1,700 °F (930 °C). Fury is experienced in the use of firearms, but prefers to use the .45 Colt Automatic pistol.
Reason for Casting: You need an older, badass actor for Fury and Biehn certainly fits the criteria. He deserves more work and I think he would own as Fury.
Lena Headey (
Dredd,
Game of Thrones) as Maria Hill: The deputy director of S.H.I.E.L.D., who took over as director when Fury went missing. As a trained S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, she is experienced in espionage, hand-to-hand combat and the use of a variety of weapons. She uses various equipment, such as standard S.H.I.E.L.D. uniform, a flight pack, an experimental plasma pistol, and conventional firearms.
Reason for Casting: I didn't really care for Colbie Smulders as Hill. She wasn't bad, but I didn't really care for her. Anyway, Headey's a great actress and judging from her work in
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, she would be great as Hill.
Chris Pine (
Smokin' Aces,
This Means War) as Clint Barton/Hawkeye: A S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent who was framed for a crime he didn't commit. He was later cleared of the charges and joined the superhero group, the Avengers. Hawkeye is an exceptional fencer, acrobat and a grandmaster marksman, and excels in the use of ranged weapons, especially the bow and arrow, and uses customized trick arrows. His main mode of transportation is a Sky-Cycle, which is modelled after a commercial snowmobile and is fitted with anti-gravitational technology.
Reason for Casting: I've never been a fan of Jensen Ackles as Hawkeye, mainly because I don't think he can play a leader (remember, Hawkeye has not only lead the New Avengers, but also the West Coast Avengers, the Secret Avengers, and the Thunderbolts). Pine has the quick wit, the looks, and the charm to play a convincing Clint Barton.
Olga Kurylenko (
Magic City,
Oblivion) as Natasha Romanova/Black Widow: A former Russian intelligence agent, who defected to the United States and joined S.H.I.E.L.D. Natahsa is a world class athlete, gymnast, acrobat, aerialist capable of numerous complex maneuvers and feats, expert martial artist (including karate, judo, ninjutsu, aikido, savate, various styles of kung fu, and boxing), marksman, and weapons specialist as well as having extensive espionage training. She has also been injected with a variant of the Super Soldier Serum, and was given peak human strength, speed, agility, relaxes, durability, senses, immune system, and extended longevity. Her gauntlets are wrist cartridges containing various tools of the spy trade: tear-gas pellets, a radio transmitter and spring-loaded cable. She prefers to use automatic weapons and firearms, combat knives and explosives as needed. She also uses a device often referred to as the Widow's Bite that is capable of emitting highly potent electric shocks with a maximum of about 30,000 volts.
Reason for Casting: I'm okay with Scar Jo as Black Widow, and I personally don't get the hate for her ("She can't do a Russian Accent" is a bullshit excuse). Anyway, I chose Kurylenko for three reasons. She's Ukranian, so she can easily do the accent, has played a Bond girl, and has a rocking' body. She can also do the action if she trained. In my opinion, she'd be good as Widow.
Villains:
Chow Yun-fat (
The Killer,
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) as The Mandarin: A terrorist who is hellbent on world domination, and is so powerful that even the Chinese government fears him. The Mandain is a scientific genius, a superhumanly skilled martial artist, having been trained in the Oriental arts since birth, and can survive for years without food and water by living on stored Chi. He also uses ten rings that grant him great power. The rings on his left hand grant him the powers of Ice Blast, Mento-Intensifier, Electro-Blast, Flame Blast, and White Light. The rings on his rich hand grant him the powers of Black Light, Disintegration Beam, Vortex Beam, Impact Beam, and Matter Rearranger.
Reason for Casting: I've seen Ken Watanabe casted as the Mandarin, but I've never been a fan of it, mainly because I want an actual Chinese actor for the Mandarin. Anyway, I'm a fan of Yun-fat's work, and it was his role as Seo Feng in the third
Pirates movie that sold me on casting him.
Clancy Brown (
Highlander,
Carnivàle) as Obadiah Stone/Iron Monger: The head of Stane International, who created a suit of armor based off the Iron Man suit dubbed the Iron Monger armor. Stane is a ruthless manipulator who studied his adversaries to find weaknesses to exploit, and is a strong believer in using psychological manipulation to his advantage. The Iron Monger Armor's offensive weaponry includes a powered exoskeleton that amplified the user's strength, repulsor rays fired from the gauntlets, and an intense laser beam housed in the battle-suit's chest unit. The suit provides the user with the ability of subsonic flight, thanks to magnetically powered turbine boot jets.
Reason for Casting: Clancy is great at playing villains, has a deep commanding voice, and is a giant at 6'4". What sold me on casting him was his performance as Lex Luthor on
Superman: The Animated Series,
Justice League, and
Justice League Unlimited. He'd be epic as Stane.
Malcolm McDowell (
A Clockwork Orange,
Halloween) as Justin Hammer: The owner of Hammer Industries and a business rival of Stark's. Hammer is the reason why many of Iron Man's enemies have access to extremely advanced technology, and why these foes use their equipment for violent crimes instead of profiting by bringing the designs to market. These villains are Hammer's underworld mercenaries, secretly armed and contractually obligated to fulfill missions against Hammer's competitors and enemies, such as Tony Stark. Hammer posses genius-level intellect and is an expert strategist. He also has access to advanced technology developed by his technicians.
Reason for Casting: McDowell's another great villain actor, and I think he'd excel as Hammer. Sam Rockwell was good as Hammer, but was too goofy for my tastes.
Michael Nyqvist (the
Millennium trilogy,
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol) as Anton Vanko/the Crimson Dynamo: A Russian engineer who created a powered armor based off the Iron Man armor, but much more bulkier. The Crimson Dynamo armor grants him superhuman strength, invulnerability, and flight. Its weapon system includes electric and laser blasters, an electric shock that can be used when touching or grappling an opponent, a gatling gun contained within the right arm, missiles, and a "fusion caster" chest beam.
Reason for Casting: I'm a fan of Nyqvist's work, especially his work as Mikael Blomkvist in the
Millennium trilogy, and he played an excellent villain in
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. I think he would work well as Vanko.
Stephen Moyer (
88 Minutes,
True Blood) as Ghost: An anticapitalist saboteur who seeks to destroy various political and economic institutions he views as oppressive, apparently being most interested in those dealing with advanced technology and surveillance. He has, at times, hired his services out to corporations and other organizations that wish to destroy rival groups, but invariably plans to turn on his own employers and topple them as well. Ghost's battle suit allows him to become invisible or intangible, but not both at the same time. Devices in the suit enable him to hack and reprogram all manner of electronic systems in his vicinity as well as intercept, tamper with or silence electromagnetic signals. He also carries a gun that fires bursts of electricity or concussive force blasts.
Reason for Casting: Moyer is a talented actor who I can see pulling off the mysteriousness and menace of Ghost. His voice would fir Ghost very well.
Marion Cotillard (
La Vie en rose,
Inception) as Whitney Frost/Madame Masque: The daughter of the master criminal Count Luchino Nefaria, who hits her scarred face behind a golden mask. Masque is an athletic woman and a skilled hand-to-hand combatant in various martial arts, an expert markswoman, and a master strategist and organizer. Her faceplate is hard enough to deflect bullets without causing her any permanent injury. She carries and uses various types of handguns, including guns firing concussive blasts of energy and guns firing sleeping-gas cartridges.
Reason for Casting: Cotillard's a beautiful and talented foreign actress who I think would do wonders with Masque. It was her performance in
Inception that sold me on casting her.
Matthew Fox (
Lost,
Alex Cross) as Mallen: A domestic terrorist who has a hatred for government and believes in white superiority. Mallen was injected with the experimental "Extremis" virus, and was turned into a superhuman threat. With his new found powers, he attacked the Houston FBI branch and killed everyone in the building. Mallen's powers include superhuman strength, speed (he can run faster than 200 mph), stamina and durability, fire breath, sharp claws, and can generate massive electric discharges.
Reason for Casting: Fox's is a great actor who I enjoyed on
Lost, and I wasn't sure if he could pull off a character like Mallen until I daw him in the recent trailer for
Alex Cross. He was pretty scary in there and it led me to believe that he could pull off Mallen.
Wes Bentley (
The Hunger Games,
Gone) as Ezekiel "Zeke" Stane: The son of Obadiah Stane and has been building bioweaponry and manufacturing next-generation weapons for terrorists and supervillains since he was nine. Ezekiel holds a vendetta against Stark and wishes to destroy him. Zeke possesses a Genius-level intellect, which he uses to reverse-engineer Stark Tech to upgrade his own biology. He has reduced his body's energy consumption from 70% to 9%, and possesses a healing factor. Zeke uses his surplus energy to power his repulser rays, but must wear a displacement suit to avoid injuring himself. As his body's metabolism is higher than normal humans, he must consume large numbers of calories, which does through a 20,000 calorie paste.
Reason for Casting: Bentley's a creepy looking bastard who can turn a good performance with the right script and motivation. He would be good as Ezekiel, and it would probably make up for that bullshit CBM
Ghost Rider.
