Nick Offerman On Comic Books And Dream Superhero Roles

Nick Ofreman Ron Swanson Comic Book Fan

Nick Offerman has previously made no secret of his love for the Fantastic Four's Ben Grimm aka The Thing; but did you know he once tried out for the role of Wolverine in Bryan Singer's first X-Men film? He also says he'd like to play Billy Butcher in Darick Robertson and Garth Eniss' The Boys. Check out his response for yourself when the comedian was asked what superhero roles he would love to play.

Offerman: "Gosh! That’s a difficult question. I hope I get to do something as Teddy Roosevelt; he’s a character I greatly admire. But I’ve always gravitated toward Ben Grimm, The Thing of the Fantastic Four. The most great superheroes I think too highly of to dishonor them by casting myself in their shoes. I tend to prefer the more modern teams of misfits. You know actually, I auditioned for Wolverine when Bryan Singer made the first X-Men movie. I went on tape reading for that role. I always felt when I was younger, I could have taken a good crack at Wolverine. These days, I love the lead character of The Boys – I’m blanking on the name – Butcher! That’s it."

And he's a huge comic book fan. Check out some of the titles and creator names he rattles off when he's asked what are some of his favorite books.

Offerman: "I love 100 Bullets, Preacher – love Preacher – Powers, I’m a big fan of Bendis and Garth Ennis and Ed Brubaker, as we said. I love Scalped, Warren Ellis – Global Frequency was a really great little pair of books. One of my roommates years ago turned me on to Sandman, and that’s where I really started freaking out about graphic novels. Alan Moore, the really classic stuff. And of course, Axe Cop....I hate when I get turned on to a series and it’s not done yet. Though now I know better. My brother also gives me a lot of great books, including Scalped, and I read a couple volumes, and I said, “This is great, I can’t wait to devour the whole thing,” and he said, “Well, it’s not done, it’s only this many books so far,” and I went, 'You son of a bitch.' In this modern age, I don’t have it in me to wait through a serial, so I have to wait until the whole thing is done. I do the same thing with TV series. I don’t believe in waiting five years; I wait until I can get the whole DVD set, and then my wife and I binge."

@blackandyellow, you will have to watch Parks and Recreation. Funny enough, Rashida Jones, rumor has it that she will be the next live action Wasp, also plays on P&R. It's funny how so many actors are now clamoring for comic book roles. Just a sign of the times.

I came very, very close to casting Offerman as Wolverine in my year 2000 redo, cool to see he actually wanted the role in real life. But yeah, Offerman/Swanson can do no wrong.

For how much I absolutely love this man and his character on Parks & Recreation, it's hard for me to imagine him playing a CBM character. Maybe because of his deadpan humor and excellent delivery of his lines. That said, he does seem to have great love for CBM's and I'd like to see him play someone else besides Ron Swanson to see his range...

Y'know, I never gave Parks & Rec a chance because Amy Poehler annoys the hell out of me, but between seeing Rashida Jones and Aubrey Plaza in other stuff, and this dude (of whom I knew nothing about until he was a guest on The Daily Show last week) who turns out is super awesome, I guess I'll give it a shot.

Ron Swanson is probably one of the funniest TV characters ever. He cracks me up with almost everything he says. It is cool to see that Offerman is a big comic geek like all of us.
