According to Variety, the big-screen adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower has hit another major setback, as Warner Bros. have decided to pass on the project. Only last week we brought you the news that the studio had commissioned a new script, and Russell Crowe was even said to have shown interest in the lead role of Roland "The Gunslinger" Deschain should the movie be greenlit. But they were also expected to make a final decision on that in the coming weeks - and it looks like they have.

WB are the second major studio to pass on what was planned to be a cross-platform adaptation of King's epic series of novels, spanning a movie trilogy and a tv series too. Universal were initially going to undertake the mammoth task with Ron Howard directing. Imagine Entertainment is apparently still determined to find a studio, but things don't look too good for the moment.

Just adapt it as a a TV series, like The Walking Dead. TV is a better format for it than all this trilogy/mini series nonsense, which my bet is the main sticking point with movie studios. That there's just to much of it to gamble that much money on.

The brothers Warner have forgotten the face of their father.

@ Roland

I see what you did there.

This is a real shame, as the books are a pretty good read.

WB has grown some kind of habbit passing on great comic book adaptions. Had they not been so unconfident about this genre, they would have defeated Marvel cinematic universe all the way, with no efforts. Now? They are "somehow" way behind the schedule.

Damn. I was really excited about Dark Tower movie. Could have been epic like Lord of the Rings.

Wonder whats the reason. Akiva Goldsman´s bad writing perhaps?

Marvel Studios should take this on. They own the comic book rights so it would make since for them to do this.

the dark tower has one of the worst endings of any book in all of recorded history. I lost tons of respect for king as a writer by pulling what he did. it wouldn't bother me if the dark tower never gets filmed in any medium.

Looks like Media Rights Capital may take on the project.

I would honestly take a TV series on Starz, Showtime or HBO because a) they would not really have to censor anything, i mean come on we have all seen how Game of Thrones can get. b)like Game of Thrones, each book can be its own season and c) I JUST WANT TO SEE THIS GET DONE!

my biggest (yet impossible) dream is that they do The Dark Tower series and the other Stephen King books and keep the continuity in tact. That's one thing I love about his works, there is a constant continuity.

definately should be a cable series. How about AMC? They have been doing well with the walking dead. Long days and pleasant nights.

Well since Time Warner wants nothing to do with it I doubt it will make it on HBO. Maybe Showtime would pick it up.

doesn't surprise me, really. Same thing happened with The Talisman. And it wasn't even an entire series of books like this. It's been talked about for YEARS and will probably never, ever happen. FANTASTIC book! In my opinion, the best Stephen King book I've ever read!

I agree with so many people about this: why can't it just be a tv series? Hell, even AMC could run this one. A series of books is perfectly suited for a tv series and it's the only way to do justice to the source material. But no, we continue to get shit thrown at us by hollywood, such as the myriad of re-makes.

Preacher, The Talisman, The Dark Tower, The Boys, Death, Sandman, ect. A treasure trove RIPE for the plundering for companies such as HBO, STARZ,Showtime or AMC! (Well, Preacher needs to be on STARZ!lol!)

@Eyesore-Great idea man! Liam Neeson was my own personal fav for the role (along with Viggo) but now, Jackman, in my opinion, would be perfectly suited for this!

This is a good thing. WB is kind of a one-trick pony, and I don't see Nolan's name attached anywhere. Better it go to a studio that can put some talent behind it.
Rothwilder
Rothwilder - 8/21/2012, 5:46 AM
Two major studios have passed on it. Why do I have a feeling the screenplay sucks and doesn't do the books justice?

HBO would be a logical choice, but they already have Game of Thrones.
ralfinader
ralfinader - 8/21/2012, 6:08 AM
@Rothwilder - good point about the screenplay and HBO. The other gamble is the budget and commitment required, and the fact several big budget flops have stunk up the theaters has to be intimidating. Still would love to see this in some form or another.

I'm glad that Warner Bros. past this off. They allowed the 89-97' Batman franchise to be wrecked and would have done it again if they didn't have such a hard-on for Christopher Nolan.

I say give the AMC channel the rights to produce it. This would make a great television series with a potential major motion picture for the end.

Long days and pleasant nights...

Yes, we remove articles for typing the alternate spelling of a single name.

We spell Stephen - Steven where I'm from, so it's an easy mistake to make. But thanks for bringing it to my attention in such a nice way, I'll change it.
