EDITORIAL: My View On the E.T Teaser!

I wasn't fast enough to add the magnificent Green Lantern Teaser on CBM but I can at least do a my Angelus Presents: on it...

Editorial Opinion

Finally, we have pictures in motion to enjoy. I have waited years for this occasion and I am extremely psyched and happy about this.
Now, as we all might have noticed, there are some complaints and praises. There will always be critics and that's a good thing but sometimes the critics goes "green" prematurely.
So in this article I would like to invite you to walkthrough the teaser while I ever so slighty comment the scenes, the ones I find most important.

The Entertainment Tonight teaser starts with Hal standing in his sweatpants and tank showing Tom, who sitting comfortably in a sofa, the power of will, the power of the ring. Now the change is phenomenal! You see the power battery on the table. The battery is what I pictured: alien egg like(why the hell would a galactic race of superior beings make a earth like train lantern battery!?) And I love how his chest and ring glows more intense when he changes:

Just look at that suit! Just LOOK AT IT! It perfect! Its exactly how a modern version of Green Lantern should look like! The glows would only look too comic like, too unserious. The suit looks natural, cold, organic and mat. Its just perfect!

Then the screen cuts to what is arguably Hal flying past the moon towards the sun, or it just might be just some random star. And you see a the green bleeds of him like air in the emptiness that is space.
Then we see this:

I cant understand that some doesnt like that ring. It's just whats needed. And I love the glow, cold green on the out and hot white/light in the middle.

It gets followed by Hal flying in space or just taking a flight on earth at night. You see the organic feel to it, the muscle like texture. Its like an armour, shielding him from the whatever he needs it to. The chest insignia truly embodies the concept of "beacon of light"!

Then it scene cuts over to what's perhaps the third greatest sequence in this teaser: Sinestro decending in a peaceful, martial art kinda way in front of a monumental Green Lantern logo statue. It was hard to see at first but it starts at 10 seconds. I loved that eastern wibe I got from it. It felt (I hate to use this word) spiritual, truly kung fu-esque in outer space:

The next cutscene is back to Hal and Tom, but then we see Hal in bed, and if you look closely at 12 seconds you will see a woman in his bed! It doesnt look like Carol/Lively but it looks like a brunette. This is a good sign! Its the right version of Hal Jordan - a good old womanizer! And he is in a hurry!
Hal then appears to be in his classic bomberjacket getting transported to Oa since he looks speechless and has a slight Keanu Reeves expression on his face!

Hal in full Green Lantern costume is then shown rescuing a little boy from a threat incoming from the heavens:

Now, what happens just after is what I believe is the Abin Sur montage where he is on his way to the milky way and eventually crashing at earth. Why I believe this is because it doesnt have the green residue like you would when a Green Lantern is on the move. Its just a yellow flares, and it seems to have a few jets to make it move so it's most definitely Abin Sur moving towards his tragic fate.

Hal uses his ring to punch some bad guys in a dark alley at night:

Notice how the punch and its residue looks almost liquid like - GREAT!

Then comes whats the strangest shot sequence in the whole teaser: Hal is fly-jumping Hammond in a kinda "handicappet" way. I think this is because Hammond has used his head, literary, to put Hal in an akward position. You get a good look at the suit. It just seem as radiant there for some reason:

Now comes a good one. A most pleasant suprise and an honor on so many level. Let me introduce the gentle but slightly rough and kind giant Kilowog:

They are at Oa it would seem, and Kilowog gets a good whiff of Hal's scent. Boot camp is finally in session and Hal needs to show that humans has the potential to become great Green Lanterns.

Welcome to Oa. It looks familiar but strange. I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore!

And finally we get a close up at Hal's face saying "We go look for trouble!"

Now comes the part where I comment the critics. The thing thats more controversial is the CGI part. Now, I somewhat understand what they mean but I am pretty sure that WB/DC is not going to allow the special effects guys in the post production use 'paint' and proclaim themselves "done". Warner Bros are going all out on this one! They are setting up to a movie series that will take over the gap left after "Four Eyes and Scary Motherf***er!"
The film just got into post production and its a good while until it premiers! Of course the CGI isnt done! It will look amazing when it does! And it looks pretty good from where I am standing(sitting)!

The iconic domino mask looks more like a square but maybe they will trim it. Its too soon to be sure but I would guess its gonna be like that but the graphics will improve immensely so I wouldnt worry to much about it!

Green lantern got people who has done the visual effects and special effects from Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Star Trek, Matrix, Independence Day, Narnia, Terminator Salvation, Twister and even The X-Files! I am convinced they will make the CGI look amazing like in Avatar, and maybe even better!
I am so sure that this isnt the final piece, and the critics should be more on the forgiving side than not now! Months will have gone by before we will see the finished product and it wont be like this!

And we did just watched the Entertainment Tonight teaser. Its a teaser on E.T, its gonna contain some clips that not makes much sense and we got the feeling its a comedic film but its not. It's supposed to be more like Iron Man meets Batman Begins than The Dark Knight. We who know Green Lantern, especially Hal Jordan knows he got some jokes and has a way thats comedic but he also has a more serious tone, which I believe this film will deliver plenty of.
I've heard a rumour from a friend who got it from a friend, who got it from his brother, who got it from a friend, who got it from a friend friend's goldfish who overheard a coke bottle talking to santa claus that the Harry Potter trailer will be more gritty and serious.

We cannot possibly make a clear judgement on this film before it gets out. It was a teaser at E.T! And that program is a bit peculiar to my knowledge. That teaser was not meant to attract the hardcore comicbook fan, at least as far I know of.

In the end I would just like to say that critics are to harsh about this teaser. Its not what everyone excepted but it has made my coming exams less painful! Tuesday will show other clips that will probably be great(er)!
The CGI will improve ten times a million, it won't be all comedy, it will probably be a mix with mostly a serious tone.

Now those pics I've shown have been shown before by Jr. Editor - Rochi Morand, so thanks to him. And if you havent seen the video before here it is also. If you find something that's really strange in the teaser please comment on the subject but please, be on the more forgiving side since the movie isnt halfway done!

i'll wait till i actually see the movie before i make any sort of decision BUT you have to admit the CGI is bad but fair enough its not finished yet but neither was thor and that still looked great but i cant wait 4 summer 2011 its going to be one of the best summers untill 2012
Angelus
Angelus - 11/13/2010, 11:34 AM
@ Ibz - Thats smart. I dont admit that the CGI is bad because I think it looks pretty decent, and it will only evolve like everything else to make the film look more fit and incredible. But I appreciate your comment.

and whats wrong with hal having one liners the guys a test pilot he's meant to be a cocky, plus this movie is aimed families as far as i know something all superhero movies should be aimed at and people want to boycott this then go ahead its still going to make money and but at the moment the cgi makes reynolds look like the green power ranger LOOL

I would not worry about what any of the ney sayers state. They're placing their stand from a 30 second preview, assembled from random 2 second clips of a movie heavily cgi based thats still in post production.
I will reserve my judgement until I see the actual trailer. Even then, you dont really know till you watch the movie. It looks promising though. Im excited for any CBM though, except for the Hulk. Never really cared about him.

@ angelus

good article well done,mate.

i will say this it doesn't look as fantastic as i was hoping.

it needs to sort a couple of things.

1.the cgi they've got six months to sort it out.

2.dialogue sounds a bit lame in places.

the final trailer will be the deciding factor for me.

you guys of got to chill about this footage, how can you say it looks great or it looks crap after 37 seconds of footage wait for the trailer.

at the moment best comic book movies of 2011 are.

1.thor
2.the green lantern
3.captain america

Angelus - 11/13/2010, 3:14 PM
@ Ibz - I agree. The costume does look like it a lot and thats a good thing I think. The costume that is a construct is just beautiful.

@ Deadpool72 - Thank you. This is the trailer of The Dark Knight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWw0ov-cAUg - 60 seconds with just the theme, an occasional voice over and just a the insignia. And The Dark Knight was a pretty decent film now.
The CGI is gonna be beautifully done. They arent done as you know. And the dialogue sounds a bit cheesy sometime but its totally out of context and incoherent.
It will get better!

@ SuperDude001 - Thank you so much! I kinda agree there. Its to plastic like in some angles/sequences and its supposed to look more like a organic shell on his body. If that was what you meant =p But its still early CGI.

Great write up Angel. I hope you're right but I can't help but feel a little apprehensive about this footage.
Angelus
Angelus - 11/13/2010, 4:10 PM
@ Hawks - Thanks. If I am wrong about the trailer, which I must admit I might be, but I've heard rumours to the contrary, its a trailer. We wont know if the movie is good until we simply see it, but it has potential. I've heard the trailer will feature the whole Abin Sur/Hal scene and some Hammond/jet scene.
The teaser was a bit disappointing but it still had some good points.
Once again, the CGI wont be perfect until it gets out.
It will however be an amazing film!

@ SuperDude001 - Goody! I know it will ;)

@brazilianbatman

like i've said in another thread... i worked on this film and they used the two most "comedic/humorous" moments from the film and put them in the trailer... it's asinine to judge the dialogue of an entire 2+ hour film from 4 lines of dialogue in an Entertainment Tonight teaser.

having watched the scenes as they were filmed... i can assure you that the dialogue is up to par. Wait till you get a sight of one of Hal and Sinestro's exchanges.
Angelus

@ibz i worked in production and we wrapped in August... i have no idea what's happening with post-production... however I will say that I've seen pre-viz for that one shot of Hal flying against the black background and THAT shot is DEFINITELY not finished... because he was being chased by something in the previz...

Boy, this is way too early to make
snap-judgements! Of course they
showed bubble-gum jokey sort of
previews on ET! That show's for families
more. They tried to make it family
friendly!

Having jokes in a movie doesn't make
the whole movie! These are tiny scenes,
I'll wait for a real trialer just
before the movie's release and of
course the actual movie!

Of course GL isn't damm DARK KNIGHT!
That's supposed to be deadly serious!
Hal has a sense of humor. Batman is sort
of a twisted slightly-bent vigilante!
Not much humor there! LOL

I'll wait to make a decision about the
WHOLE movie when I actually SEE it!

DDD
DDD - 11/14/2010, 2:21 AM
But I do agree with Hawks@!
Some of the dialogue, especially,
makes me a bit apprehensive!

The belt scene seems kinda dumb
to me, a little overblown.
But every movie has some scenes
in it that aren't quite right!

But I'm gonna reserve my FULL
opinion till I see the FULL trailer.

HAL JORDAN is satirical, humorous and meaningless in most cases, especially when he realizes incapable of understand that everyone who is in the face of certain death would retreat to live, but otherwise he will face it, and invariably wins.
DarthLaney
DarthLaney - 11/14/2010, 5:49 AM
Costume is more Kyle Rayner, than Hal Jordan

But I don't mind it - what I don't like is the speed at hich it goes on. I was expecting a 'flowing' effect that covered his body, rather than BAM its on

Image with Hal flying up into the air (second last one, OA city scape) - is that Sinestro!

I don't give a damn about the cgi. I know that they're going to polish it up before the movie. Anyone who thinks otherwise is kinda moronic. Unfinished cgi is ALWAYS the case in teasers for superhero movies.

My problem is that the tone of the trailer was not what I expected. It just didn't pump me up the way it should have. And to those of you who are like "That's not the trailer!!" Yes it is. It's not ALL of it, but it's a good chunk of what we'll be seeing in front of HP. I read the description for the trailer a couple a days ago and that's actually where my doubts began to kick in.

The trailer is too lighthearted. Now I don't expect it to be like The Dark Knight in tone, but I don't expect it to be the Fantastic Four in tone either. But the trailer really gave off the vibe of the latter, and we all know how the FF turned out. Who knows? It's not unlikely that the trailer is the exact opposite of how the film's gonna be. But you have to admit, it's certainly unusual that they would market the film this way, especially the very first trailer. Usually the studios start aiming at certain demographics once tv spots hit the air. And the really lighter ones in tone will air on the kids channels. But to see it in the very first trailer before HP? (a series that has gotten progressively darker.) It's not a good start for the marketing campaign.

And before anyone calls me a biased Marvelite, believe me I will be VERY harsh on the Cap and Thor trailers if they fail to meet my expectations.
