Chris Pratt Recalls Knowing He'd Landed 'Star-Lord' Role In GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Audition

While Michael Rooker and a certain journalist boast how great the Marvel space opera will be, Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt reminisces about his screentest and a fun slow-motion scene.

“I remember originally they were like, 'Hey, what do you think about this Guardians of the Galaxy idea,'” recalls Chris Pratt during a recent MTV News interview. “I was like, 'I don't know. I feel fat. I don't want to go embarrass myself and have them say "no" to me.' Then I would go online and see this list. They were like 'The Dream List,' and it would be 25 actors, all of whom have beaten me out for roles. I wasn't even on the list,” said The Lego movie actor. “I was like, 'No way. That's a bad idea.' I was circling around it for a long time, and they kept testing people and testing people, and no one was right for it. I went in and met the director, James Gunn, and something happened in that room,” continued Chris Pratt. “He gave me a sense of what he wanted. I, of course, wasn't able to read a script until essentially after signing up to do the movie. I could tell from what he wanted that it was something I close to what I could give,” he said. “It started just becoming real. Then it did. I had a screen test for it. Even during the screen test, I was like, 'Oh, I got this. This is mine. This is mine now.' I knew going in.”

When MTV asked whether the Guardians of the Galaxy team will have ensemble uniforms at some point during the movie, Chris Pratt said: “It's kind of each [Guardian] does their own thing. I think James Gunn said it recently. He was like 'where sometimes comic book movies can go wrong is they take themselves very seriously and it's material that shouldn't be taken seriously; it's really fun material. We do have a pretty fun moment like the team's coming together... it's the shot... where the team is walking in slow motion and the good music's playing. We have that moment, but this is a little different than other comic book movies because we're not superheros necessarily. It's like an epic space opera type of movie. It's not like there's an origin where I can shoot sharks out of my eyes, or have some type of special thing; it's not like that. We're kind of misfits and our strength is that we work as a team.”

Meanwhile, Michael Rooker spoke with The Advocate about his Guardians of the Galaxy role as Yondu and boasted how “good” the James Gunn-directed adaptation will be. “I’ve been in this business a long time,” he said. “I’m reluctant to say, before I’ve seen something, before something’s come out, no matter who’s made the movie, that it’s going to be good. But Guardians of the Galaxy is going to be so crazy good.” In related news, HitFix's Drew McWeeny, who visited the set among other things, also dropped an intriguing description of the film while covering its rumored 2016 sequel. “It's a space opera, a big comic adventure movie with some real sadness and some real anger,” says the journo. “And it introduces some very complicated mythology that starts to fill out threads [Marvel] has already introduced in other films.”

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand - with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is presented by Marvel Studios and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gilian, Djimon Hounsou with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Commander Rael and Benicio del Toro as The Collector. Distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the film opens August 1, 2014.

Awesome! So, he basically confirms that the team will not have their uniforms in this movie. Maybe they'll wear them in the sequel.

Cap is most likely going to be the first BIG hit of 2014,no movie coming out until then seems to make the amount of money i think cap will make( 600 mil-800 mil) so put it in front of cap ,botha trailer and a 5 min preview and then we got promotional barrages in the following months

@0megaDaGod The interviewer asked him if at some point we'll see the team using uniforms like the ones the characters had in the comics but Chris Pratt denies this.

If think something might come up about the Mandarin in Age of Ultron. Drew Pearce hinted we might expect something about Mandarin in future.

@ezio
I think they were building it towards the real Mandarin. As @0mega pointed out in some other article, they basically said that Iron Man 3 had a fake Mandarin in a Interview during IM3 release but we never noticed it until now. And now we have a one-shot joining the dots so it must be that they have something planned.

Hell yeah!! I love both these guys. I have no doubt both will be excellent in this, especially Rooker, who I feel is such an underrated actor, who's been around for quite some time...

The only question I have is with Dave Bautista. I've never seen him act before. Now don't get me wrong, he looks fantastic. As do all the actors in their makeup, etc... But drax is an important role to tie into thanos, and this connecting the avengers with gotg.

Oh well, I guess that's a small tic I'll just have to wait and see how it turns out.

ezio619 - 2/7/2014, 10:54 AM
ElDarkside-yeah he is, but feige has said Drax has a Vendetta against Ronan for a a past tragedy but Drax might not know Ronan works for Thanos and Thanos might be behind this tragedy and he finds out during the film and then his mission becomes to Kill Thanos

Everyone is asking for a trailer, so it is time to just sit down and figure it out. The trailer will likely be released on March 10-12th. That gives the film a solid 5 months of advertisements/social media hype.

More specifically, it will be attached to "Need for Speed" on March 14th, allows Disney to get a couple extra butts in the seats to try to gain more revenue for a film which they own (And more importantly, want to get a franchise out of). The first trailer with Cap 2 is too late. We will see it before Need for Speed
