Dave Bautista Returning To The WWE; What Does This Mean For GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY?

There had been speculation, but it was made official last night that Dave "The Animal" Bautista is returning to the squared circle next month. However, that leads us to wonder what exactly will this mean for Guardians of the Galaxy, a movie which will see the wrestler turned actor plays 'Drax'...

By JoshWilding - Dec 24, 2013 07:12 AM EST

On last night's Raw, a promo aired confirming rumours that Dave Bautista is returning to the WWE next month. According to various sources, he'll be back on a nearly full-time basis, performing on both televised and non-televised live shows. The WWE has always had a good relationship with Marvel, with several of their Superstars often being interviewed on the site and CM Punk even providing a foreword for the Avengers Vs. X-Men hardcover. It seems likely then that we should expect to see James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy heavily promoted on WWE television, just as G.I. Joe: Retaliation - which starred Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson - was earlier this year. The WWE and Paramount Pictures even entered into a promotional partnership to give greater attention to both that movie and Pain & Gain. It's a win-win situation for both parties.

It's thought that Batista will be taking part in high profile storylines from January 20th (a week before the Royal Rumble, so read into that as you will) right through Wrestlemania XXX and beyond, although it's likely he will take some time off around the time that he'll have to do press for Guardians of the Galaxy. So, why should you care? Around 15 million people tune in to watch various WWE programming each and every week, and if the James Gunn helmed movie is being promoted through them, that can only mean good things for a movie which Marvel are going to have to work hard to sell. Airing exclusive TV spots, clips or just mentioning the release will surely have at least a small impact on its box office success, so this news is good for WWE fans and anyone hoping to see the space faring superhero team make more than just the one outing!

It doesn't mean anything for GOTG. Chris Pratt is going back to parks and rec, does that mean he won't be on gotg2? No, it doesn't.

He better not get hurt and interfere with the filming production.

God I miss wrestling.

But it's gotten so terrible. When Daniel Bryant is one of your most marketable stars, along with the [frick]ing Miz, I just can't support it anymore. That and when Jeff Hardy got fired for the 2nd time, my heart died.

Doesn't mean nothing..... He can still do a GotG franchise and still be on wwe

Take Dwayne The Rock Johnson for example

He had FIVE movies that came out this year and a hit tv show Hero this past summer and still was on WWE early this year

It means that he's finished filming and will be now taking part in the WWE, while possibly promoting the film when it nears release.
I really don't know what you thought was going to happen.

Sucktista fought one MMA fight against a fat guy who looks like Rush Limbaugh and he nearly lost. He only won when the ref stopped it prematurely.
So he belongs in play-fighting.

And the WWE doesn't have the drawing power to help a movie.
Raw's ratings are not good. 3,541,000 a couple weeks ago. And it was a drop of 500k from the week before. All three hours of Raw were also beaten in the 18-49 demographic by Love and Hip Hop 4, Fast N Loud and Chrissy and Mr. Jones 2.

So Sucktista being signed by the WWE is an act of desperation. Lesnar and The Rock couldn't help them and neither will Sucktista.
Expect more desperate moves soon by the WWE like the signing of Sucktista.

I hope WWE start promoting the crap out of this movie at the beginning of May

And I also hope Marvel decide to move up the release day into July 25th

It would be awesome if a week before the movie they have him come out as drax and wrestle a few people. I don't like wrestling, but that would be AWESOME.

@Batmaniac You have to look at is this way; Sucktista will fit into the kind of film Disney/Marvel will make.

@Batmaniac

Was there anything not painful about 'Man With the Iron Fists'?

And he should be pretty good as Drax, not like the role requires Shakespearean acting training. He just needs to be a badass. As as someone that used to love WWE, he was crazy good. He was known as the 'Animal' and he pulled it off perfectly.

JoJo1982:

That is not entirely correct. As Omega tried to politely point out...Josh was very clear as to what the promotional possibilities of this move could be.

The negativity problem is deeply rooted in the fact that too many users on this site have ZERO reading comprehension abilities.

@batmaniac

He's not a bad choice, just not a perfect choice for Drax. But he got the look down and if your a fan of Drax I hope Dave got some better acting skills, show his hatred for Thanos or Ronan.

Maybe we might get a hint of moondragon

Doesn't matter who plays drax. Because his body is just a superpowered shell. I'd just like to think that drax just happens to look like Batista. Otherwise it's unbelievable for me to believe he can fight after seeing his terrible mma debut. He could barely beat Rufus from streetfighter

One thing to remember...

WWE promotes films under the WWE films banner

Examples include:

The Condemned
The Marine 1/2
The Scorpion King
The Rundown
Walking Tall

I'm not sure, in all honesty, if WWE will allow much in the way of promotion for GotG, as it doesn't make them any money, other than MAYBE attracting new Bautista fans to WWE.
