Kevin Feige On Future Marvel Movies, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY And More IRON MAN Films

Teasing Marvel's presence at D23 next month, as well as reiterating what to expect from Iron Man's big screen future, Kevin Feige also confirms when we can find out what movies they have lined up for 2016/2017 and discusses developing a lesser known property like Guardians Of The Galaxy.

In an interview with Collider that took place right before Marvel Studios' San Diego Comic-Con panel, head honcho Kevin Feige discussed a variety of topics. He reveals that the 2016 and 2017 Phase Three slate from the company won't be unveiled for a while, since they're currently focusing on developing Phase Two (which concludes with 2015's The Avengers: Age Of Ultron). He also talks about developing a less popular property such as Guardians Of The Galaxy, saying that there is a need for something not seen before on film (unlike Thor or Loki, for example). He then praises other studios for developing their own cinematic universes (namely Warner Bros., who announced a Batman/Superman movie for a 2015 release). Finally, Feige reiterates prior comments on whether or not we can expect to see more Iron Man movies with or without Robert Downey Jr., and teases what the studio has in store at next month's D23. For the full interview (in which Feige discusses Comic-Con and Agent Carter), click the source link below.

On Developing Guardians Of The Galaxy Despite It Being A Lesser Known Property:
"It’s not a secret. Nobody knows it. It was not a successful live action TV show in the ‘70s. It didn’t have a successful cartoon line. It isn’t a part of video games. It is the least known, which is exactly why we’re doing it. Do you know what I’m feeling here? I’m feeling excitement for Batman vs. Superman. I’m excited for that. It’s awesome. But it’s another movie with combined comic book characters. I think they’ll be excited for what we’re doing with Thor. I think they’ll be excited for what we’re doing with Captain America, but there’s a sense that I feel here, which is, “we love this. They’re revealing the Winter Soldier! Oh my God, look what Loki’s doing!” But there’s a sense of, “what’s new?”.

"So the need for the new is something we talk about, and we’ve been talking about for the past five years. Everything we’ve done has been a plan, has been premeditated. I love that Warner Bros. is doing it. I love that there will be announcements from other studios later today, about this notion of shared universes. It did not exist, and we thought it’d be fun to play with it. I love that our success has inspired people to do it, because the audience said, “we like that. We want more of that, please.” So, I love it, and I can’t wait to see those movies that come out. We’re not thinking three years ahead, even five years ahead and 10 years ahead. How do we keep it fresh? And Guardians is our big answer to that."

On Whether Or Not A Fourth Iron Man Movie Will Be Made Regardless Of Robert Downey Jr.'s Involvement:
"I’ve said it before and it wasn’t negotiating tactics. I believe Tony Stark is as strong a character as Batman We’re about to head into our fifth or sixth Batman – however, you wanna look at it – James Bond, etc. So, there will absolutely be future Tony Starks and future Iron Mans. Who makes those movies, and when those movies are made, who knows? I don’t know. But, the notion with Robert’s contract in The Avengers 2 & 3, is to allow new characters. Part of what we love about The Avengers is the shifting roster. That’s what’s fun about the comic book movies. You shift them up. So, certainly that was a lot of the thought process that went into it."

On When Marvel Will Announce Its 2016/2017 Slate:
"Well, it’s only 2013 now. But, I think it would probably be, at the earliest, a year from now."

On If Marvel Will Make An Appearance At D23 2013:
"Absolutely. Totally. It’s a unique, big, and important Disney corporate event. It’s at least every other year. And D23 has the slight advantage that it takes place a little bit later. So, for movies that are currently filming, there will be more stuff available at that point."

Thor: The Dark World hits theaters November 8th; Captain America: The Winter Soldier will be released April 4th, 2014; Guardians Of The Galaxy arrives August 1st, 2014; The Avengers: Age Of Ultron hits the big screen May 1st, 2015; Ant-Man debuts November 6th, 2015; three untitled films are slated for May 6th, 2016, July 8th, 2016, and May 5th, 2017.

Stop comparing Iron Man to Batman & James Bond.

Batman & James Bond are characters that have been known for years that are loved by the general audience.

Iron Man only became popular because of RDJ.

Batman and Bond has had numerous actors play them and they sell.

Can you promise Iron Man can be successful without RDJ?

Iron Man also has a weak rogue gallery. I mean I like Iron Man but he's not in the same ballpark as Bond or Batman. No [frick]ing way.

You don't see DC changing the way Batman looks in the comics like Bale like how Marvel has done with RDJ.

Sorry but its true. Doesn't matter what actor will play Bond or Batman, people will see them. You can't say the same for Iron Man.

Iron Man has become a household name recently, but Kevin is right. It has a following now and can continue the following in the future without RDJ. He made Iron Man so the shoes are big to step in to, but someone will inevitably do it.

And since it is his FIRST live action incarnation, of course there will be doubts whether anyone else can take on that mantle.. but at the end of the day, he is a comic book character who has been around for more than half a century and isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Didn't Bond become popular because of Connery? Did anyone think Jack's Joker would someday be topped? I'm not saying Iron Man will have the longevity of either character but to say it cannot be successful without RDJ is asinine. If they cast another great actor and make good movies, it can work.

While I agree about RDJ being why Iron Man sored in popularity, I think it's better to compare this stage of Iron Man's films to the final film Connery appeared in. Imagining someone else as Bond was probably just as difficult for an audience at the time, but now it's totally accepted. The first non-Connery Bond wasn't very well received at the time.

Good point on the Joker. Back when Ledger was first announced, I know a lot of the vocal internet nerds were screaming about how Nicholson would always be THE Joker. Now you can't throw a stone at a convention without hitting a Ledger-style Joker.

I'm feeling excitement for Batman vs. Superman. I’m excited for that. It’s awesome. But it’s another movie with combined comic book characters.

I'm sorry but I don't understand what you mean by this? Your excited for Batman/Superman but its just another movie with combined comic book characters?

Couldn't you say the same thing about Avengers or Fantastic Four or X-Men or even GOTG?

We really haven't had a superhero duo team up on film yet. It's something that has yet to be done.

Plus its Batman and Superman together. The 2 most well known comic book characters of all time together for the first time on the big screen. I'm feeling the same excitement for this as I felt for Avengers.

When we have producers call a CBM "just another movie with comic book characters", it makes it feel like your trying to downplay it.

No 2 CBMs are the same really. They are all different and unique and should be treated like that.

What's your [frick]ing point Feige?

The Reason Batman has thrived from different actors and even Voice actors is because the character has a far more impresive rouges gallery. Theres just so many stories to take influence from. The same can be said about Bond in the Ian Flemming Novels. RDJ made Iron Man much more interesting than he really is. In fact his comic book counterpart was always C Grade at best.

I don't hate Feige, I just don't understand what he means when he says Batman/Superman is just another movie with combined comic book characters.

It makes you sound like you think all CBMs are the same when they're not.

Also if its just another movie with combined comic book characters, couldn't I say the same about Avengers?

Kevin Feige is the main reason for Marvel Studios's success. He still is very humble to say nice things about Dc and Batman movies, unlike the DC guys such as Zack Snyder who in the past had critized Marvel.

I have enjoyed mostly everything from Marvel so far, escept for Coulson resurrection and super Pepper Potts in Iron Man 3.

I can see Robert Downey Jr. playing Tony Stark aka Iron Man until Avengers 3 in 2018. By this time he will be 53 and I think it will be time for Collin Ferrel to step in and become the new Tony Stark/ Iron Man of Marvel Studios.

guardians of the galaxy movie, this is what i like about marvel studios willing to take risks with lesser know characters.

as for iron man 4,i have no idea who could replace robert downey jr but whomever dons the armour it'll be interesting to see if it can bring in the same numbers as the original trilogy.

i need to know the rest of phase 3.

im not against recast but I hope Batman , Iron Man, DC and Marvel characters don't become James Bond. I think its ok to recast twice or triple but more than that its too much.

I want to stories with begin and end. And not something that goes forever.

In a world of what? 7 billion? 8 billion? Only 8 million comics are sold a month. That's DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, Image, all of them combined.

People don't read comics.

Iron Man will still be popular after RDJ is gone. Of course, he'll take a backseat to Spider-Man, but still be a household name.

Sean Connery made Bond, yet Bond survived his departure.

Who makes the movie? The actor or the character,I go to the cinema to see Iron Man not RDJ,it's time to reboot with a real badass Iron Man like the 1 but with the real Mandarin played by Ken Watanabe.

i think with the right actor and story and superhero film can succed that includes a iron man film without downey, i didnt even know who he was when i saw iron man.

and levi iron man or anyover super film doesent need a good rogue gallery in the comics to succed on film. one good thing about haveing no good villians is it gives the people makeing the chance to create a new villian without being held back by the source material.
wookiefit
wookiefit - 7/25/2013, 11:07 AM
This all makes perfect sense. They could have done this with Sam Rami's Spider-Man instead of rebooting it. Introduced Gwenn and Topher Grace as Eddie, never show him become Venom though. That was a mistake because some head honcho said, " All the fans want Venom, so add him in." Then if Tobey and Kirsten didn't come back, at least there would be some resemblence.

If Robert doesn't want to come back, you could have War Machine replace Iron Man on the Avengers. Hell! They replaced Rhodey in IM2 and it worked because they kept the other actors.

@LEVITIKUZ He said that even though he's excited for the movie, the team up of separate superheroes isn't necessarily a new thing. X-Men did it, Avengers has done it etc. Guardians of the Galaxy is just a more 'out there' concept with trees and racoons and other cosmic creatures. Its a newer and fresher entry into the CBM genre than a team up movie.

He wasn't downplaying Batman/Superman at all.

Batman/Superman is new.

Saying its like X-Men or Avengers is false. Those are teams.

Batman/Superman would be like a Hulk/Thor or Captain America/Iron Man or a Spider-Man/Wolverine team up.

A duo film has yet to happen.

Also how can you say GOTG is something new when everything I hear about this film, they say its Marvel's Star Wars. That's not new.
