We've been sharing rumours about a Nova project for years now, but 'ol Buckethead still hasn't made his MCU debut. Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn introduced the Nova Corps in 2014, only to later make it clear that Richard Rider wasn't a character he had any interest in.
In Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos laid waste to the Nova Corps off-screen and the Russo Brothers confirmed they came close to introducing Nova (only to conclude there wasn't enough room for him in the already very busy movie).
Not too long ago, we heard Nova might be getting the "Special Presentation" treatment, while there's been talk of a Disney+ series as well. Whatever the case may be, the expectation is that any story would revolve around both Richard and the much younger Sam Alexander.
Well, according to Daniel Richtman, the plan now at Marvel Studios is to rework Nova as a movie.
There's no word on a creative team, so it's still very early days. Honestly, we wouldn't be surprised if Nova makes his MCU debut post-Avengers: Secret Wars as it's hard to say where there will actually be room for him in the Multiverse Saga.
Asked in 2021 whether fans can look forward to seeing Richard Rider and/or Sam Alexander in a movie or any other upcoming MCU projects, Feige responded with "well, yes and yes" to both questions.
"Timing is relative, right?" he continued. "I think I'd been talking about Doctor Strange eight years before that movie came out. So, 'immediate potential' is relative. But clearly, we are not shying away from the cosmic end of storytelling right in the sweet spot of the Nova Corps and Nova himself."
In the comic books, Novas are the wielder of the Nova Corps. There are many different rankings within the Nova Corps and different types of Novas as well. Richard Rider holds the titles "Gold-Dome" and Centurion and Sam Alexander holds the titles Supernovas and Centurion, respectively.
Sam is the current Nova, a teenager who uses the helmet and joins the Avengers. Richard Rider was created by Marv Wolfman, Joe Sinnott and John Buscema first appearing in 1976's Nova #1. Sam Alexander, meanwhile, was created by Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness, first appearing in Point One #1 back in 2011.
