Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn recently revealed that he's envisioned a three movie arc for the current team, but now teases the formation of a new group for the fourth chapter.

It's become clear recently that James Gunn has envisioned the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise as a trilogy, but that doesn't mean the series will end when the stories of Star-Lord, Rocket, and company wraps up. Is the filmmaker going to kill them all off or just find a happy ending for them? That remains to be seen, but in a new interview with the Toronto Sun, the filmmaker teased the future of this group. 

"I think the first three movies tell a single story and that story is pretty simple," Gunn explained. "I think that there could be a Guardians Vol. 4, but it would not be the same. It would not be the same group… basically the story of this group ends with Vol. 3." So, let the roster speculation begin!

Characters like Nova, Quasar, and Adam Warlock could easily make up a brand new team of Guardians, and Gunn went on to tease how he'll be helping Kevin Feige and company create the Marvel Cosmic Universe moving forward in regards to which characters get the spotlight. "I will be helping to plant the seeds that will lead to the next decade. I’m helping to decide what projects we’ll be pursuing outside of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3… and what the next cosmic characters we will focus on."

Yeah about that, it's just not Guardians of the Galaxy without Star-Lord, Rocket and Groot, I don't mind shelving the franchise for a while as Marvel explores other cosmic characters or even teams, but I don't like this plug in a new character to replace the "originals" and pretend they are just as good. And yeah I realize the 691 irony...

@TheUnworthyThor - Well, its really about the title "guardians of the galaxy". Not to spoil 2, but they feel little like mercenaries sometimes. I imagine the next incarnation would be more.....tougher.

It would be pretty clever actually to have the plot be about "pretending to be as good as the orginal" basically a movie how its hard to replace people.

That said. I imagine you could still get starlord and drax in the film. Either in the team or doing something else.

I know he said a whole new team, but i feel like he wouldnt follow that.

Well if that's the case then please leave the Vol subtitle alone. Just leave it for that trilogy. Vol is only there for the soundtrack and that's only there due to Peter. Give it a soft reboot.

@AngryBillCipher - Pretty sure they will though......why what you want it to be called or have? just 3 or a long sub title.

if its not Vol i'm sure it will be something to do with music like Mix or Greatest hits (Prob the title of the trilogy collection when thinking about) . I would only think that it wouldn't be Vol 3 due to the big time skip between Vol 2 and IW then the third film.

@AngryBillCipher - so you would want the subtitle then. So what ever the plot is is the sub title thats what you are saying?

The only problem is that I think ppl are use to the idea that the film would be called Vol 3 that it would up set a lot of ppl if they didn't put Vol as the title. Vol 2 might lend to Starlords family but its still there to represent the soundtrack aspect.

Plot, I bet will be about the GOTG being full of themselves as what was hinted by Kevin that they will be wearing matching outfits in IW. So it sounds like they've started a brand and are really famous in the universe. Sounds like a story Gunn would want to tell. Sort of a metaphor on how no one knew what GOTG was even comicbook fans. And now they are the biggest think ever next to the Avengers. Imagine baby groot toys within the film itself.

Is it just me, or have the mcu people been talking way into the future recently. It seems a little early to be talking about vol. 4, and life post infinity 2, shit, we are so far away from that stuff. Most people have only seen one guardians movie, calm your tits lol. I don't necessarily WANT to know about vol. 4 right now, save that juicy info for later.

@ALostCause - I guess for them it's probably on the forefront of their mind because that's what they are really working on, the Russos are handling Avengers and the directors of Ant-man and Captain Marvel are concentrating on those movies but all the other top creative people have to start forming the stories past those.

@KWilly - but we are close. Avengers 3 is just next year. It'll go by in a blip. Prob get some footage this summer. And they probably already know exactly what they want to do for Guardians 3.

@ALostCause - For us maybe it seems far away but they have to start thinking about the future. By this time next year, most of phase 3 will be finishing production, and Marvel will need to figure out their next story arc.
