Castlevania To Receive New Scribe

Castlevania To Receive New Scribe

James Wan, the man who wrote Saw, has been hired to re-write the Castlevania script.

Paul Anderson originally was the writer of the Castlevania script. Until the studio decided they needed a rewrite. Now the creative genius behind the Saw films is on board. When asked about Castlevania, Anderson (who is still on board as a producer) had this to say:

“One of the things with Castlevania is it’s not just about the creatures but the environment trying to get to you as well," he explained. "I think [Wan] is a terrific choice [to rewrite the script] because a key part of Castlevania is the intensity of being trapped within the confines of the castle, and he’s shown with Saw that he excels with intensity in confined spaces.”

This is good news for you ComicBookMovie Horror fans out there. The Saw films were well written and Wan seems to be a master of setting up tight spaces for his victims to escape from. It will be nice to see what Wan can come up with for Belmont to escape. Hopefully they make Dracula a ruthless bad ass like he is portrayed in the video game.

No filming date has been released with Paul Anderson himself saying Castlevania is still in pre production.

@SirPrize see, that kind of thing drives me crazy, that you assume that this is a "bandwagon" film, which is odd, if you consider that this thing has been in the works since before the whole Twilight craze.

that being said, I think Hugh Dancy would be a better Alucard than a Belmont--I know, I know..."but I thought you said it wasn't a twilight bandwagon film, why even think about a character that is basically a twilight vampire?" While it is true that Alucard is afraid of his own power, and could occasionally be viewed as whiney, a larger element to his character is the fact that his sole purpose is to murder his only relative, and that he shows so little remorse when he has to follow through...

and @Anil Rickly Castlevania is Konami, though they did have a pretty decent game out there for the Sega genesis...but I do agree that Gerard Butler would make a great Belmont

@SirPrize yeah, I get what you mean, it's just...what if (and I know this is a BIG if, this being a videogame movie and all), but what if this was another "Let the Right One In", or "Near Dark"...or one of the other vampire movies that's actually competent? Would it be so bad that the only reason it got made was because vampires are hot property in H-wood? While I hate movies made simply for the money, it's not at all shameful to use the "bandwagon effect" to get actual class films produced...

Example--I have a vampire script sitting at the bottom of my drawer as we speak...it's been there for three years, and I have no ending, but if I did, you can bet that I'd be sending it off to anyone and everyone who I could get ahold of. Why? well, not because it's about some weird pseudo-abusive kid who stalks an emotionless teen girl (it's actually a black comedy about a vampire who is going to AA meetings pretending to be an alcoholic so he can take the lessons he learns there and apply them to his blood addiction...with awful results), it's because Hollywood already MADE the movie about the pseudo-abusive weird kid, and everybody wants more vampires and wants them fast, so if I could use people's "yay-bloodsuckers" mentality to make something that was actually decent, I would totaly take advantage of that. So I'm withholding judgment on this one at least until a script manages to find it's way online.

@SirPrize well, I'll agree to that...to be honest, I'm actually waiting on the upcoming Asylum film "Solomon Abel"...starring Steven Seagal, directed by Uwe Boll.

Sarcasm aside, I do see what you mean about it being JUST LIKE Van Helsing with the addition of a whip, but hopefully, without Sommers at the helm, Castlevania might actually manage to be good. I'm trying to think of how to word this next sentence regarding how a slower, creepier Castlevania movie would be a great idea, but I'm finding myself distracted by the rack...

SirPrize- Let's not kid ourselves, Castlevania pretty much invented the Van Helsing crap film genre but they did it WRONG with Van Helsing. I do believe it could be done RIGHT and i agree that Ridley Scott could be the best man for it! I've been waiting way too long for this film and having to satisfy myself with Van Helsing was like being a vampire and wanting to enjoy a sunrise. So hopefully they make this one right. So far, all the news we've been getting is actually pretty damn stellar concidering that Uwe Boll could have gotten his hands on it.

Sirprize- My point was for us not to kid ourselves... it didn't really mean anything. Thought it was a good opening.

And i agree that along side the failiure of Helsing and the lack luster of what appears to be Solomon (could be good, doesn't look it though), Castlevania has they're work cut out for them. Hopefully it'll all blow our minds like when the first Blade cam out and no one was expecting that hell of a ride :))

Shaman- Totally agree with you about Blade. That film was the surprise of the summer on '98. Speaking of surprises...

NINTENDO SPOILER ALERT!!!

All i have to say is, when I beat Castlevania II: Simon's Quest and my man Simon died after making Dracula's grave and his body slides down the tombstone, I was shocked! Heroes didn't die so I thought. I was wrong! One of the greatest NES surprises in my childhood. I'm done.

In my opinion, this movie needs to be DARK to succeed. I mean really dark. I enjoy a good campy horror movie as much as the next guy, but I don't want cheese with this, any definitely not the "Van Helsing" feel to it, because that just plain didn't work. I've never bothered with the Saw movies, but if it could have that sort of tone, and a decent script, we might get something good out of this.

Seriously, in a perfect world, this movie made right should fricking haunt you. Stylized camera work and visuals could really set this one apart, lets hope it happens.
