Guillermo Del Toro Describes His Version Of Frankenstein Monster!

Taken from an in-depth biographical article by The New Yorker, Guillermo del Toro has given a description of what his take on the horror figure will look like.

Here's what he told them:

In accordance with Mary Shelley's description, the head appeared to have been stolen from a cadaver: there was exposed sinew around the jaw, and the cheekbones looked ready to poke through the scrim of flesh. Most appallingly, the Creature lacked a nose; a single bridge bone protruded over an oval breathing hole. [The artist] had been etching deep furrows into the Creature's forehead, and shaved bits of clay were scattered on his desk, like clippings on a barbershop floor.

Frankenstein arrives in theaters 2013 (although no word yet on a shooting date)!

The 1994 movie was pretty good. It realy grasped that victorian tone. I'd love to see what del torro makes of it.

Thats a cool pic Gun. I actually hated Branagh's Frankenstein. He should never have cast himself in the lead. To be honest I could take or leave another version, even from Del Toro. At The Mountains Of madness is a diff story!

Wonder when they are going to bring these to the big screen?

Or Hellstrom?

These movies i would like to see over Hellboy 3 and Frankenstein!

I actually tried to watch the Branagh Frankenstein just yesterday. Wow! I really really like Branagh, I like his Shakespeare movies, and I'm extremly excited for Thor, but this was just too bad. Not sure if it would've been better if someone else played Frankenstein, but as it was it didn't work at all. Thankfully I fell asleep about halfway through it...

ah, i am at odds with myself. Del Toro can do great things, especially visually, and his take on horror is a total breath of fresh air. He can redefine any myth or tale but being a huge Boris Karloff fan, I still see noone doing justice to the role of the monster. Who would?
AlexDeLarge87
AlexDeLarge87 - 2/1/2011, 6:19 AM
Kyos@ Yeah Robert De Niro, Tom Hulce and John Cleese were the best part in it.

Being that it's Universal and they won't let anyone else use it, I'd like to see some kind of nod to the classic make-up. Even Wrightson's drawings used Karloff's facial structure as a model.

@blankofthedead

I have to agree. Even 80 years later, no one has managed to find the right balance of menace and pathos Karloff brought

I don't know about this. It may not be exactly as described in the original book, but I prefer more of the traditional look for the Frankenstein monster. Besides, there have been a jillion different versions of this story. Why not do something different?

I think Del Toro is doing the right thing; he’s taking the appearance of the Monster directly from the original source instead of copying the look of a 1931 movie that is no longer scary. Karloff face has become a pop culture icon; I even had a lunchbox with his mug when I was a kid.

I love the first two movies from universal from the 1930's!

The newer versions, including the Hammer films, server only to annoy me. I like flat top n bolts Frankie

I think I'd do Anna Hathaway if half given the chance. She has beautiful eyes, a decent bod, and doesn't seem to have an oz. of bitchy-ness.

verdugo- your comment seems contradictory. ur saying its best to sway from the look that even years later you had enjpyed as a kid. He doesn't need to LOOK that scary, the humility in his look helps you empathize with the monster. His actions and unbalance of despair and anger are what should frighten you

They already did Blade vs Dracula in Blade 3. I was pissed they ruined what could have been awesome.

In the novel I believe Frankenstein uses the most beautiful individual body parts he can find, but only realizes once the monster is animated that combined he has created something horrible. Like you though I have not read it in a couple of years.

Del Toro + Frankenstein = PERFECTION!

Although I would have loved to seen GDT'S Hobbit, IMO this is a much better fit

I was never a real fan of the iconic green skinned block headed monster. In the text he had yellow skin, black lips and long black hair. That is a monster rendition i'd like to see.
localman
localman - 2/1/2011, 9:42 AM
Please, Del Toro, make a SMART monster. Mary Shelley's Book features a smart, bitter and vengful monster who seeks out to torment his maker as a punishment for making something so hideous. And the final scene should be the monster and the Doctor on an Ice Floe in the Arctic with an ambiguous ending.

AlexDeLarge87 - 2/1/2011, 11:49 AM
robdel@ Yeah they did but that was Blade movie which yeah like you said sucked big time.
I meant they should make The Tomb Of Dracula movie which tells the story about Count Dracula (more of hero in this comic but still bad) and his descendant Frank Drake. The original Blade in that was british and used wooden knives. I would like to see that movie on the big screen. Don right it could be pretty scary and graphic. Also it should be based in the same time period which was the ´70s, the beginning of the ´80s maybe?
Something like Coppola´s Bram Stoker´s Dracula mixed with Guillermo Del Toro´s Hellboy (without the funny parts).

ShadowVoyd@ Cool pic!:) Wrightson´s Frankenstein is creepy and scary as hell!

@ skullboy i totally agree brother im tired of the zombie apocalypse and twilight age. if del toro went for the look and feel of old school universal or hammer films would be the best. i know he could do it perfectly if anyone could

Blankofthedead What I tried to said is that Karloff Frankenstein was not able to scare me even when I was a kid. Besides, his appearance has nothing to do with the way Shelley described Frankenstein's monster: An 8-foot-tall (2.4 m), hideously ugly creation, with translucent yellowish skin pulled so taut over the body that it "barely disguised the workings of the vessels and muscles underneath"; watery, glowing eyes, flowing black hair, black lips, and prominent white teeth. That sounds really frightening.

I do have found memories of Karloff image and the 1931 movie, but instead of watching another update like the awful Wolfman, I would rather see a more faithful take on Shelley’s book.

Besides Del Toro really knows monsters, I’m sure he is going to make sure that his Frankenstein is unforgettable.
