Shane Black And Sir Ben Kingsley Tease A Big Reveal With 'The Mandarin' In IRON MAN 3

Talking at the Iron Man 3 press conference in London yesterday, director Shane Black and actor Sir Ben Kingsley were quizzed on a big reveal in the movie in regards to 'The Mandarin' character. While that isn't revealed here, be warned that there may be what some consider to be SPOILERS AHEAD.

Iron Man 3 is a movie full of clever twists and turns, but there's one which may end up being a little...controversial. While those who attended the press conference for the movie in London yesterday were warned not to ask anything too revealing, that very twist - which involves 'The Mandarin' - was brought up. Thankfully, both director Shane Black and Sir Ben Kingsley handled it perfectly and the former had this to say when asked about a pivotal scene which included Robert Downey Jr., Don Cheadle and Sir Ben. Black was specifically asked about whether or not the sequence was improvised or fully scripted.

"These are fabulously talented people who have the ability to make structure seem like improv," he said. "They knew the scene backwards and forward and they performed it in such a loose wonderful way that it makes it seem like it's just occurring in the moment and they're just dancing and thinking on their feet. We covered it like every other scene. We shot it like every other scene. It's probably the truest to the script of most any scene in there and it's one of the best because of the talents of the people involved. In particular, just seeing Sir Ben open up and at the end of the shooting day, the crew spontaneously applauded after that scene."

As for what inspired his unique take on 'The Mandarin', Kingsley had this to say (come back and read this again after seeing the movie and it will take on an entirely new light). "It's great. Of the many devices that 'The Mandarin' employs, all of them are rooted in observation on my part and I won't name names, but some members of the audience might be able to recognise that I'm doing them. It's a beautiful script and as Shane rightly points out, there's very little deviation from what was on the page by Drew and Shane. There was our mandate and we followed it pretty well to the letter." Stay tuned for more highlights from the Iron Man 3 press conference!

Seriously guys, having seen the film yesterday, you DO NOT want to know anything about The Mandarin out of context of actually seeing the movie, in this case context is everything. Trust me.

Im really brainstorming here and I can not come up with a single thing that would piss so many people off besides the whole powerless rings stuff. And I know that's not it..

Correction, i do believe the Mandarin having powerless rings is true, i just dont think that is the big twist everyone is griping about. The rings thing has been known for quite some time now

@SpidaTrav, if that is true we will have WWIII on CBM lol. Everyone that was trying to justify Osama Mandarin can fall back on that now, Nolanites will accuse them of being hypocrates. It will be the battle of the ages.

I like that idea though. Would not mind it at all.

LEVITIKUZ considering The decoy mandarin will be getting all the screen time and the lines, it makes sense to have the bigger name do that, despite what the character actually is

@CoulsonLives, from what i have read from the certain tweets, ***SPOLIER*** it is in fact that stupid scene with Banner. No GOTG or AntMan. Hopefully they add one for the actual release of the movie

It could either be very brilliant in concept and execution or a total derivitive fail.
MisterNiceGuy
MisterNiceGuy - 4/18/2013, 7:43 AM
SpideyTrav, i wouldnt look at it that way. I think Marvel is just trying to change up the formula a little bit. With all of the movies they have made and are comming out it is going to be hard not to be repetitive with there movies. Im sure they wont do this for every phase 2 film
RamonSuarez
RamonSuarez - 4/18/2013, 7:45 AM
@MisterNiceGuy

I agree. This film could be an answer to all of the complainers and detractors who said that Marvel Studio films are formulaic and derivitive. I'm glad to know that they are taking more risks in the Phase 2 era of their cinematic universe. But we have to see how they pull off the plot twists and "unorthodox" creative choices they make. It can either go very right the way Liam Neeson being Ras Al Ghul worked so well in Batman Begins or very wrong in the dumb reveal of Miranda Tate being Talia Al' Ghul.

Yes. It will change things up and force people to reevaluate their opinions towards Marvel, even me. I'm very curious to see how they conceptualized and executed some of these "twists".

I hate it when people know or claim to know spoilers to a movie, make it public that they know the spoilers and turn down requests to tell the spoilers. That is attention whoring at its finest.
