Shane Black Unsure About IRON MAN 4 Return; Wanted To Call '3' THE IRON MAN

Iron Man 3 director Shane Black reveals that he's yet to be asked about possibly returning for a fourth instalment in the franchise, while both he and writer Drew Pearce reveal that they initially wanted to call this movie The Iron Man. Read on for details!

The winner (@Jasper_UTF, a.k.a. MovieMaster) of our recent Iron Man 3 contest - in which we offered one lucky fan the chance to interview Shane Black and Drew Pearce - has gotten back to us with some highlights from their chat and they include some very interesting tidbits of information! Firstly, when the former was asked about whether he would be interested in working with Marvel again either on Iron Man 4 or another movie, he said: "Well, Marvel would have to ask me because they're famous for not working with the same people twice, and who's to say they would ever approach me so that's something we'll cross when we come to it." Joss Whedon made similar comments when The Avengers was released, so expect to see Black return if he's willing and if (well, when) the movie proves to be a success at the box office.

As the conversation continued, a particularly interesting reveal was made by Black and Pearce. Many fans have wondered why both the Thor and Captain America sequels were given more than just numerical titles, while Iron Man was had just the additional "3". As it turns out, there were initially plans for a slightly different name. "The problem with Iron Man is it's essentially an aircraft and a weapon," said Black. "That's what I like about the modern comics, particularly the Matt Fraction run. He calls it 'The Iron Man'..." Pearce then interrupted with the following. "We actually wanted that as the title at one point, that kind of modern thing of calling things The Amazing or The Incredible, but we ended up steering away from it." What do you guys think? Would The Iron Man have been a better title? Sound off with your thoughts below!

Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

I actually think that putting "The" in the title of a sequel to indicate that this is, supposedly, the definitive movie of the franchise is really lame.

But that's just me.

"The Iron Man" would have been a cool name.

They committed to the numbering in Ironman 2 so they have to continue now I guess...

Shame though, I much prefer the Cap and Thor sequels titles and subtitles format.

NO. We do not need this. You started numbering with 2, so you go with it. Don't do the Rambo thing: First Blood, Rambo: First Blood Part II, Rambo III, Rambo. That doesn't make any sense. We don't need you to do that stupid stuff.

Just watched Lethal Weapon 2 for some nostalgia. Two helicopters shooting up Riggs' place while he's with his girl? How's about Riggs using his truck to bring down that fancy house in LA? That scene looks just like the Iron Man 3 trailer. Very cool nods from Mr. Black, it'd seem. I really wish Don Cheadle would say "I'm gettin' too old for this shit."

I like to think the MCU as an alternate universe that can play with characters in a different way. That is why this twist everybody is talking about doesn't really bother me. Even so, has it been confirmed yet?

@ ElmoTheThird

that's a good way to view it but i like my movies to be as close to the source as possible,i'm fine with slight changes & you can pretty much come up with any original story you like, but you pretty much must keep the look & the personality of the character from the comic.

There is going to be an Iron Man 4? I thought it all ended in the third one. Marvel should just keep Iron Man as a trilogy other wise they run the risk of putting out another Iron Lady 2. Oops spoke to soon forgot about Iron Man 3 LMFAO :)

Problem is that people may become a tad confused by Iron Man and The Iron Man. It worked for The Fast and The Furious because of the two former titles and shift in the spirit of the series.

Unless they meant sticking on THE Adjective IRONMAN.

Why not call the call the 4th one "The Invincible Iron Man"? It would be a good name due to his recent popularity.

ABARy:

"Iron Man: Extremis" would have been sweet.

"The Iron Man" is badass as well.

Folks there is nothing wrong with the plot twist, just try to keep it a surprise for the movie. Report any comments that reveal plot points!

What is the one adjective that is ALWAYS associated with Iron Man? Invincible. And given this big comeback story that is Iron Man 3, detailing how even at his weakest, lowest point, Tony Stark and come back stronger than ever and save the day, The Invincible Iron Man would've been best. Iron Man 3 is out of place with the titles of other Phase 2 films.
