KRISTIAN: The summer is officially here, and it’s marked with the return of Tony Stark and his Avenger alter-ego, Iron Man. Going into “Iron Man 3” I was pretty excited; the franchise needed a fresh jolt and director Shane Black appeared to be the man for the job. I loved his “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” (also starring Robert Downey Jr), and the chemistry between director and star could be the key to reinvigorating the Iron Man legacy. And for the first half of this film, it certainly did. In a near-perfect set-up, we get caught up with Stark’s ups and downs since the events in New York (depicted in “The Avengers”), and we meet one of the more menacing screen presences in recent film history: Ben Kingsley as The Mandarin. The humor, action and plot development set us up so well for what could be the best “Iron Man” yet…and then a twist happens. No spoilers here, but it took the wind out of the sails…whether fanboys love it or hate it, I can respect the bold attempt but simply don’t think it pulled it off. The action sequences late in the film help right the ship…there’s everything from incredible mid-air heroism to Iron Men bailing out their creator in more than one instance. It’s a feast for the eyes from start to finish, and Guy Pearce, Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle are solid contributors. As an “Iron Man” film, with all that character has done to establish Marvel as the comic book film kings, I found the third installment enjoyable but a bit of a let-down. However, as a fun summer movie experience, it’s a great ride that gets our season off to a hot start.

SCORE: 4/5 Schmoes

MARK: Following last summer’s epic “The Avengers” is like trying to follow the Rolling Stones at Wembley Stadium…how can anyone top what just happened? It’s a daunting task for sure, but if there’s one guy up to the challenge, it’s Tony Stark. Robert Downey Jr returns to his iconic rock-star/scientist/tinkerer role…and he’s brought his pal Shane Black to direct. Everyone else is back too: Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts (now officially his love interest, no teasing about it), Don Cheadle as Rhodes and Jon Favreau as the comic-relief body guard. This movie gets off to a hot start as the jokes come flying fast even as we learn not all is well with Tony’s post-Avengers mental state; however he better recover fast: the evil Mandarin is making some classic comic-book villain tv appearances and looks to be a formidable opponent. Guy Pearce’s slimeball is also lurking around with a mysterious new technology…it’s a lot to handle, but Black’s direction ties it all together marvelously for almost an hour. But then it takes some twists…and turns…and stumbles. Some bold gambles with the story direction aren’t my biggest problem; it’s that they appear to also take the heart of the movie out of the equation. The characters who seemed so real and three-dimensional revert to being your run-of-the-mill heroes and bad guys. Some eye-popping action sequences at least make this a worthy summer endeavor for movie fans, but it felt like “Iron Man 3” got such a big lead in the first half, it was content to run out the clock late in the game. Like Tony Stark himself, maybe we all have a little bit of post-Avengers traumatic stress syndrome.

SCORE: 3.5/5 Schmoes

(Schmoes give Iron Man 3 a good review): "I love their reviews!", "These guys are awesome"

(Schmoes give Iron Man 3 a bad review): "These guys are idiots". "I never trust critics to tell me what movie I'll like. I'm going to see Iron Man 3 for myself."

Really looking forward to seeing the movie this weekend, so far it seems like the more close-minded didn't like it because of the apparent "Twist" that happens, me being and openminded person I think I'll like it

guess the hype was too big. Ballsy twist didn't help either for sure. Hoping, that when i will finally see it in theater, the twist won't bother me. As long as it will make sense on screen.
Just never been "hardcore" Iron Man comic book fan.

I really like the realism in the comic movies, but I don't like to be removed the fantasy and make the villains seem ridiculous.
In essence DKR may make changes in the Batman's enemies (Joker and Bane)but were still being recognizable.

Best marvel movie in my opinion, maybe a tie with Avengers. While I'll admit I'm not a fan of any comics, I am as hardcore a Whedonite as they come, so it takes a lot for me to say that! Its like blasphemy to me! But this movie was just brilliant. Hilarious, great action and character interactions, and a twist that you never see coming (unless you saw the movie after the tantrum of futurepast). Stark had the best wrap up of his arc over the three movies that any superhero has had on film. Brilliant character development.

i'm with some of these people and their negative responses. this movie was disappointing. all this hype for nothing. i thought sir ben kingsley was gonna be menacing or whatever like reviewers and the people on set raved on about. ok so these dumbasses wanted to make the movie more grounded and realistic like that's neccesary. ok i get that but what the fawk happened to the mandarin. i was under the impression that at least the mandarin/kingsley was going to be a terrorist leader who destroys tony stark/iron man. the rings didn't have mystical powers but i thought some how they would play a technological part in the movie where the mandarin controls the suits. this movie was nothing like i expected. i give it a 3 and that's being generous just for the sake it did have some good parts. it would've been better with the fu manchu stereotypical mandarin with the mystical power rings. why they didn't go with that is beyond me. can't believe some tweeters said this was better than avengers...pffft...dumbasses

I still think there's more coming. There may be a twist to the twist. And Shane Black usually does them very well case in point was The Long Kiss Goodnight.I don't know if anyone else has picked up on some things in the movie but something tells me that we haven't seen the last of the Mandarin.

Man I'm just as mad as everyone about the mandarin and I haven't even seen the movie....I dislike the idea, the mandarin is prison bate in this movie...ill still see it and may like it but I will never, ever, til the day I die like this idea of the mandarin, I know for a fact I won't take Him serious now. The whole time ill think, "Tony, don't waste your time
