Documentary About George Miller's Aborted JUSTICE LEAGUE: MORTAL In The Works

Many of you will know that before he returned to the iconic Mad Max franchise with this year's immensely popular Fury Road, Aussie director George Miller was working on an even bigger project for Warner Bros. Miller's now-cancelled Justice League: Mortal once looked set to "unite the seven" as early as 2009, but production location issues and the writer's strike derailed the project. By 2013, Miller's superhero flick was but a mere memory, with WB opting instead to re-build the DCCU, beginning with Zack Snyder's Man Of Steel.

However, there was a time that this project genuinely looked like it was going ahead, with a cast attached. Notable members of Miller's ensemble include The Lone Ranger's Armie Hammer as Batman and 'Immortan Joe' himself (Hugh Keays-Byrne) as the Martian Manhunter. So what really went wrong? A new documentary looking into the cancelled feature has been proposed by director Ryan Unicomb, who sat down with Inside Film to discuss his vision:

“I have always been fascinated with project, which would be in the same vein as 2013’s Jodorowsky’s Dune and this year’s The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?, about a Superman movie that Tim Burton was to direct in the 1990s.”

With producers, writers and private investors already on board, Unicomb suggested he may also turn to a crowd-funding campaign to help fund the project. Given the quality of similar recent features like Jodorowsky's Dune, this may be one to keep an eye on. Does a documentary like this interest you? And how do you think Miller's Justice League: Mortal would have panned out? Be sure to leave your thoughts below!

Awesome!
The project was so intriguing and I actually liked a lot of the casting choices strangely.
Especially the goddess that is Megan Gale

After Fury Road, I'm sure he'll get the opportunity to make a superhero movie, if he wants to and isn't busy with the next two Mad Max movies.

George Miller should still do a DC film, hell he could still do a Justice League film

I'm not sure if I wanted to see it after reading the story, but I do want to see how he envisioned the JLA

After Mad Max Fury Road, George Miller will be making a DC film for sure.

He was visiting the Suicide Squad set, his biggest regret is not making JL: Mortal, he said he grew up a DC comics kid, he has a good relationship with WB.

If Mad Max doesn't make enough to get a sequel, WB will likely make a deal for Miller. If he directs I'm guessing Flash, Green Lantern, or Shazam film and they will do another Mad Max film.

I've dreamt of seeing a JSA movie onscreen - featuring your profile character @0megaDaGod of course ;) If Miller's the man to do it, I'd be down with that!

@AxE - Yeah I flicked through it when it leaked and quite enjoyed it. Meant to come back and read it properly. How were the exams mate?

Heights of actors don't matter.

Tom Cruise is like 5'3 and he looks about 6'2 in every film he's in.

Really.... the movie could've had amazing performances, a great plot and been overall awesome but it still would've been bad because Armie Hammer had the audacity to be born too tall?

1. George has beeen spotted on the Suicide Squad set a couple of weeks ago.

2. The rumor goes that Warner Brothers wants him back for a DC project. My personal hope would be either Cyborg or Flash. But since he is as old as he is, Flash might be the better option. I want James Wann direct Aquaman as rumored, since he could do it as as solid horror/action movie if the Trench are the villan as rumored. George Miller directing with a script from Phill Lord and Cris Miller would be an intresting combo

3. George has said it himself that he regerets that he did not do the Justice League Mortal movie, and would love to have another shoot at a comicbookproperty and grow up reading DC so...

@Emblemmaniac

I think a lot depends on whether the Miller wants to write & direct, like he did with Fury Road, and whether Lord/Miller want to write & direct the Flash.

If I'm WB, I do what's best for the films and the talent. If the best way to Lord/Miller in the fold is to have them write and direct Flash, so be it. If George Miller would prefer to write & direct, then Flash isn't the right project for him. Honestly, I let him decide what project he's most passionate about and take it from there.

And like I said, a lot depends on his availability. He's writing & directing the next two Mad Max movies too. And like you said, at his age, if the next two Mad Max movies take 5-10 yrs to get from script to screen, he'll be pushing 80yo.

I I i speak for everybody when I say thank Grodd this HACK didn't get a chance to ruin these characters by shamelessly sticking to the source material and understanding the tone of the characters. I mean, could you imagine having a director known for social commentary and component, tight directing would have done to our beloved JLA? No! Join me as I petition this on the internet!

Armie Hammer should've been Eddie Brock to Garfield's Peter Parker, but damn, SONY had to ruin what could've been!

After seeing Mad Max: Fury Road, I'd be okay with him making Justice League Part 2, Green Lantern, Lobo or anything DC property really.

DJ Controna was great in From Dusk Til Dawn: The Series and Armie Hammer is solid all around. Gale was decent in Mad Max and Adam Brody/Anton Yelchin would still be great choices for Barry/Wally. His Aquaman, MM, and Lord choices were trash though.
