For those who haven’t read the acclaimed JLA: Tower of Babel, well, go read it. The short version is: Batman has constructed contingency plans to deal with every member of the Justice League should they ever go rogue. Ra’s al Ghul subsequently steals these plans and puts them into effect, thus nullifying the League, and allowing him to enact his evil plot. Eventually they overcome their own demons and band together to stop Ra’s, but in the aftermath, Batman is kicked out of the League. You may also recognize this story as being the inspiration behind the animated film Justice League: Doom, as well as the failed Justice League: Mortal.

One of the most appealing facets of this comic is that it really gives each character their own time to shine. Every one of the heroes has to face their own personal challenge and conquer their own weakness. Obviously, certain characters (*cough* Batman) will be given more importance, but this way, no matter what, there will be time for every hero to get some level of action and development all to themselves.

Speaking of Batman, this comic uses him in a way that makes it very appealing as a plot foundation. Understandably, Warner Bros knows that Batman is their most popular character and are going to want to put him front and center. At the same time, no one wants to see Batman and friends versus evil. Tower of Babel is a happy medium, since he’s the most prominent character but hardly the main focus. Within the comic, Batman’s actions set the plot into motion and the main theme of the arc is whether his distrust in his fellow heroes is founded. However, even though things revolve around him, as mentioned before, the story is pretty fair about sharing time with everyone. Sure, he’ll get an extra spotlight at the beginning and the end to frame what he’s done, but the main body of the story places no extra emphasis on his personal showdown.

People have been wondering why Superman needs help at all. One of the biggest questions Justice League will have to address is why he needs a team surrounding him when he can presumably do everything they can and more. This story brings him down to our level, making him completely weak and vulnerable. It conveys why Superman needs the support of the League and shows his imperfections. It also gives him the chance to prove that his strength is more than just physical as he psychologically and emotionally faces what Batman had in store for him.

Tower of Babel also features the potential for some incredible action sequences. Each hero faces a very diverse problem and while we’d still get the standard team-up fight against the villain at the end, the middle of the film presents a chance to do something very creative. Explore The Flash’s super-speed and make us see the world how he does without stopping, take away Green Lantern’s vision and watch his constructs go wild, have Wonder Woman throw down with an equally-matched fighter throughout a crowded city. There’s so much room for interpretation and very little of it resembles the cliched set piece where heroes and villain meet in some unique location, fight for 10 minutes, and then the villain gets away.

Another important feature of Tower of Babel is that as long as the general premise remains, there’s a lot of room to change details without altering the course of the story. It’s not important how each hero is dealt with so much as the fact that they each have to face a weakness. Likewise, the villain of the whole piece can be easily changed. Ra’s al Ghul still works, but he’s been done before, and his role as a terrorist who wants the Justice League out of the way can easily be replaced by almost anyone: Vandal Savage, Prometheus, Maxwell Lord, Lex Luthor, etc. Any of them can fit into the villain’s role and it gives a lot of flexibility in terms of what kind of antagonist the director wants to use. Basically, there’s a good story no matter the villain or the intricate details of their plot.

Part of the reason the villain is somewhat inconsequential is because the real main antagonist of the film would be the Justice League themselves. Their own worst fears and failures are what they’re struggling with amidst Batman's betrayal of their trust. Intangible ideas like weakness and distrust are the real villains causing the League to fight, which makes for a lot more interesting story than a bunch of them banding together to punch Darkseid over and over.

Sure, Identity Crisis, Justice or Kingdom Come could all make very cool films, but Tower of Babel is an incredible story arc which presents a unique threat to the Justice League, and forces them to deal with a vast array of emotional issues and character developments unlike anything else. It offers a malleable structure, an ensemble of heroes and a distinct conflict. For these reasons, Tower of Babel is the best story to adapt for a Justice League film.

You read the piece, what do you think? Is this the right comic to adapt, or do you have a different story in mind? Let me know in the comments.

Tower of Babel would make an incredible Justice League film. I don't believe in straight adapting that arc but, keeping the premise with some changes wouldn't be a bad thing. It would be much more interesting though if it was the second film in a Justice League trilogy.

I disagree, Babel was a great story but I dont see it being right for the first JL movie. I also think we're going to see this idea brought up a lot now that we know Babel was the loose basis for Justice League: Mortal.

No.

You don't start a JL franchise with Batman beating everybody.

In a movie universe, you can't ask the audience to suspend disbelief to the point that Batman suddenly has knowledge of all these heroes and how to beat them.

That's knowledge he acquires after years of observation.

Kill this shit and stop these silly editorials.

@yaboi,

DC's wrecking house on TV, animation, video games, and comics. Movies are just the last frontier for them even though DC produced the first billion dollar, Oscar award winning CBM.

Thanks for being a bitch.

The Mortal script wasn't very good. The animated feature based on this idea wasn't very good. While that doesn't mean it's impossible for them to come up with a good script, it's enough to make me nervous about them trying.

I'd rather have Tower of Babel as a Sequel, it would fit better if the first film did something to instigate Batman's Paranoia

Best saved for the sequel, it would make a great progression of character however this should not be the first JLA film. The first film should deal with Darkseid or someone of that magnitude that the Man of Steel cannot deal with alone.

Tower of Babel would be interesting but since there is a great deal of exposition that would need to be covered by introducing the individual characters (since most of them don't have any solo movies), have them decide to become a team and still explain how Batman has them all figured out in such a short amount of time. For a sequel it would be better.
It is difficult at this stage for a Justice League movie given that only Superman has appeared in the DCCU. We need a solo Wonder Woman movie after World's Finest (or Batman vs Superman). At least we can go into a Justice League with the big 3. Martian Manhunter could appear in Batman vs Superman as a cameo as Detective John Jones perhaps and then revealed to be THE last Martian who knows both Batman and Superman's real identities.
And I know I am probably the only one - I want to see Ryan Reynolds back as GL.

This would be a good end trilogy movie, the third movie in a series but not a movie for introducing the team to a audience. This editorial is not even looking at the big picture, more of a fanboy saucer-eyed rant!

I guess you can see where most would agree with this as a possible storyline for the film. But I don't think it should be the story for the first film. Introduce everyone in the first then dive deeper in the second.

But really its not a bad idea. I love it! I don't think it's wrong to assume we could see this on the big screen. We actually are getting a piece of The Dark Knight Returns story in the new Batman vs Superman so anything's possible including this storyline.

But yeah I love this idea. I'm all for it.

Yep. TV is better that movies because a TV show can stretch for a generation. As bad as some consider it, Smallville was on TV for 10 years. An 8 year old was 18 when that show ended. It was still on even after Superman Returns proved to be a bust.
Plus, comics are a serial format and thus a natural fit for serialized TV.

I strongly disagree with making the Tower of Babel storyline the first story for a number of reasons. For one as has been stated by others making Batman the automatic king of the league is a terrible idea and off puts fans of the other characters with him already having instant ways to neutralize/kill every Justice League member. Another issue is how does Batman have any information on the other members besides Superman since I am guessing this will be many of these characters first time doing anything. There is no way he has already concocted plans to take everyone else out yet. Lastly none of the characters should even have a arch villain to even put into this storyline yet so how the hell can they already make a legion of doom to fight them. This movie is already suppose to introduce Wonder Woman, Cyborg/Aquaman/Martian Manthunter which ever one or combination of the three will be in the movie, all of them teaming up but also introduce all of their archvillains along with giving us backstory to connect with them the running time might be forced into the 4 hour mark with all the stuff your asking for here.

How about adapting DC New Frontier. Take the premise of that story and modernize it. I thought WB did a fair job bringing it to animated dvd and that if done right it could make a good movie.

Amazing concept for a Justice League film. The comic did not do justice to such a great idea. That being said, it's not a good story for the first outing of the JL on film. I see it as a more adequate story for a sequel, where the group is already formed and their relationship established; otherwise, Batman's distrust would be seen as completely justified (since he JUST met this guys) and his plans would make him look way too awesome (he JUST met them and already has contingency plans for all of them).

Would be great as a movie, I don't think it should be the first JL movie, the second would make the most sense.
