How A Justice League Film Should Be Made

With the recent rumors of Warner Bros. being interested in making a Justice League film in a few years, I decided to share a few things I would want to see in such a film should it be made.

I think we can all agree that a Justice League movie is one that absolutely has to be made. As we know, such a film came close to reality a few short years ago in the form of Justice League: Mortal, but eventually died off after the Writer's Strike. As of right now, whether or not WB will go ahead with a new project has yet to be determined. A few months ago, it was reported that Warner Bros. would release a Justice League film in 2013, when Man Of Steel was still slated for late 2012. But with that film being pushed to summer of 2013, there's no way a Justice League movie would be released at the same time. Also, with Green Lantern recently bombing at the box office (barely making its budget), it seemed unlikely that WB would put out a DC property other than Superman or Batman. Then we got the rumor that Warner Bros. would release a Justice League film in 2015/2016, after sequels to Green Lantern and Man Of Steel. That has yet to be confirmed or denied, but if that's the way they're doing the film then I'm all for it (more on that later). Personally, I think that a Justice League film could be truly mind-blowing if done right, and has enough potential to blow even Marvel's The Avengers out of the water. below are a few things I want to see done in a possible JLA film...

Set the film in a shared universe.

One of the things that people want to see the most in a Justice League film is the crossing over of previously established characters in previous films (similar to what Marvel's doing with The Avengers). JL: Mortal didn't go that route, and was planning on putting out spinoffs starring Wonder Woman and The Flash. Hopefully that most recent rumor about Henry Cavill and Ryan Reynolds being in the same film are true. Granted, Nolan's Batman will be too difficult to fit into a fantasy-filled film such as Justice League, so a Batman reboot a couple years later is just fine. However, there's no reason Cavill and Reynolds can't come back. Cavill looks to be our best Superman to date, and I really admire the effort he's putting into knowing the character as well as he could. And say what you will about the Green Lantern film, but I personally think Reynolds wasn't a problem at all. He can play serious characters well (see Buried), and Hal Jordan was written as not being very serious one too many times. Reynolds was good with what he was given, and has potential to improve with a better script. With that said, he and Cavill should definitely reprise their respective roles should a JLA film be set in a shared universe.

Establish other characters beforehand.

I don't mind if they release films for Aquaman, Green Arrow or Captain Marvel after the first JLA, and Martian Manhunter's origin can work into Justice League, but a couple characters need to get screen time first. The Flash has been a project that's been off-and-on for a few years now, and it seems like WB is ready to release it (hopefully) in a couple years or so. (Then again, with Green Lantern bombing, it could've pushed The Flash back a few short years) Also, Wonder Woman is a character who should've been adapted into film a long time ago. It's interesting to see Marvel release films for Punisher, Ghost Rider, Blade and Thor before DC can release something for one of its biggest characters (and the biggest female comic character ever). Hopefully DC will release a Wonder Woman film in a few years.

Keep the original lineup.

With Geoff Johns reportedly writing a Justice League treatment, I hope it doesn't mean we can't get the original lineup of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman and Martian Manhunter. I don't mind cameos from Hawkman, Green Arrow and/or Hawkgirl in a first JLA movie, but I don't want to see Cyborg or a while. He's not a bad character by any means, but as a part of the main Justice League lineup? Hell no. What I'd imagine for a JL trilogy is first film, start out with the main lineup; second film/third film, bring in other characters aforementioned.

Bring in a good director, good writers, etc.

As said before, in the recent rumor of Justice League arriving by 2015/2016, Geoff Johns was writing a treatment for the film. That's what happened with Green Lantern, and we all know how mediocre the script was. But Johns didn't write the script; the script has 3-4 different writers. Not only is that writing team been hired to pen a Green Lantern sequel, they were also hired to write The Flash. I would be worried of the team doing the Justice League film, but the rumor stated that David S. Goyer was being pursued to pen the screenplay. With his excellent work on Nolan's Batman trilogy, he proved to be a good writer when he isn't directing as well (cough Blade: Trinity cough). I also don't mind Johns writing the treatment. I'm thoroughly enjoying his current run on Justice League (despite the occasional hit-and-miss dialogue), and with a seasoned writer like Goyer doing the screenplay, it should be good then.

As for directors, it's kind of tough to choose one personally. Christopher Nolan's out of the question, otherwise Christian Bale could possibly reprise his Batman. Zack Snyder probably won't do it, and no way in hell should Martin Campbell do it. I'd love to see someone like JJ Abrams (Star Trek), Peter Jackson (Lord Of The Rings), Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) or Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy) directing a Justice League film. I'd add Joss Whedon to the list, but since he's directing The Avengers...yeah, it would be awkward.

Well, that's it for right now. With The Avengers almost certainly being a smash, I can see Warner Bros. wanting to put out a Justice League movie in the same vein sometime afterwards. 2015/2016 may be a bit early to release it (considering their having to put out a couple of characters on film beforehand), but I'd be happy if it can be released by the end of the decade. As said before, I think such a film would be truly amazing if done right, and let's hope WB puts a good one out sooner than later.

nice article. I would much rather see an innovative, quality computer animated movie than live action for Justice League. Very dificult team to bring on-screen.

If it were live action, Zach Snyder would get my vote.

@PaulRom Great write up bro. Still I wouldn't mind if Cyborg was on the team, it just has to have Manhunter as well. Personally since Green Lantern was such a miss to most, I think I'd do WW, Flash, then a new GL film using Hal and John Stewart. This is how it would work:

Hal, Sinistro, Kilowog, and an newly recruited John Stewart investigate the death of Abin Sur. They would find that Atrocious had killed him. They would go after him, but Atrocious would find a weapon (The Manhunters), which the Guardians had disabled after creating their new corp, and turn them back on. Finally, after the Manhunters killing several Green Lanterns, Sinistro would use the forbidden object (the Yellow ring), which the Guardians had created, against the Manhunters, Hal try's to stop him using the ring them battling each other. Sinistro escapes after the Manhunters have been defeated. GL2 Sinistro Corps War!

What do you guys think?

@superotherside That sounds awesome. Somewhat better than the real film. But I think Reynolds deserves another chance, he could show others that he's the best choice for Hal Jordan ATM. He just needs a good script to work with to do so.

@PaulRom Yeah, but I think people would go to it a bit more if it was with another actor...

Also the above story wouldn't necessarily go completely against the first GL film (except that Atrocious being the murder... but the most of the same thing could have happened, for those who liked the GL film, but the same goes, it could be a completly new continuity, more of a requel than a reboot or a sequel... also Hal would be a GL for sometime he's no rookie...

do it in crisis form, GL, supes, nolan's batman, wonderwoman and aquaman are all in their own universes, someone like Darksied attempts to conquer multiverse, and so Superman travels though dimensions to collect the heroes(great hero of their universe) to form the justice league, they then stop darksied, but in consequence all universes are combined into one

Reynolds as GL, Cavill as Supes. We need a guy for Bats, Martian Manhunter and Aquaman. Ryan Gosling for the Flash and maybe Serinda Swan for Wonder Woman.

Reynolds was absolutely the best part of Green Lantern, the script was at fault but I am afraid GL might be another Superman Returns, which I truly hope it isnt because Reynolds is a really decent actor.

Anyways, I think it would be better with the top 5 being in a JLA movie at the first time: Bats, Supes, GL, Flash and WW.

Cool stuff @Paul! And yeah, it could potentially destroy the Avengers pretty hard. Justice cannot be avenged after all ;)

I should write JL, ha, nah, no JL til DC comes up with a unique and different masterplan for their shared universe film lineup.

Nicely written @PaulRom

@superotherside

Great idea. I really like your GL film idea.

I don't think the shared universe would be a good idea.
I don't want Man of Steel to have ANYTHING to do with the atrocious excuse of a CBM that was Green Lantern

I think Nolan would be great for the story, but James Cameron has more experience when it comes to directing 3 hour sci-fi cgi-heavy films

Shared universe, for sure

Wonder Woman and Flash definitely need a movie of their own before a JLA movie. But yeah those are the only ones, after the JLA movie they can expand on other characters.

And definitely keep those 7 for the first one. No more than that. It would just be too crowded for a first movie. After you've established these characters then you can move on to others since people will already know about the original 7.

Nice job @Paul.

This sounds like everything I put in my fan fiction: JJ Abrams as Director, Nolan producing and on co story with Goyer. Share universe.

-The film doesn't have to be set in a shared universe
-"Realism" is not necessary in JL,and by that they can keep the original lineup.
-Get a director that knows how to handle an ensemble cast

Well, I don't think the Warner Brothers big wigs are going to attempt a Justice League movie and say "Hey, let's bring in a crappy director and an even crappier writer". Do you think so..?

PaulRom
PaulRom - 11/26/2011, 7:43 AM
@Intruder Maybe this is cuz I prefer Justice League over Avengers, but I just feel the former could be better. JL is more popular among comic fans, the team has more A-listers than Avengers, etc. Plus they have better characters IMO (which is debatable, of course), as well as powers that are more interesting and better villains (Darkseid, Legion of Doom, etc).
Good lineup, except I'd replace the Batman reboot with a World's Finest (which is, IMO, a good way to reboot the character again without another solo film), release JL in 2017, then the Batman reboot in 2018. Maybe squeeze in Flash and a GL sequel for 2014/2015.
PaulRom
PaulRom - 11/26/2011, 7:47 AM
And I can see Flash and Wonder Woman as a sort of launching platform for a DC Cinematic Universe, with Man Of Steel and World's Finest.

I just can't see a DC shared film universe lasting for too long.

Unlike Marvel whose crossover events like Civil War and Skrull/Kree War can fuel a lineup of more films.

DC should focus on animation.

@Intruder

Yeah, World's Finest would be the safest move for DC.

like marvel, we need to see the flash movie (and GL 2) before JLA movie. the flash movie is the project most advanced because the president of warner said "we have a good script for flash", so now why warner do not the movie before JLA??? they must make flash for 2014, GL2 for 2015 (and maybe superman sequel) and JLA for 2016. i hope!!!

MaddMonkk - 11/28/2011, 2:16 AM
I think they should do the opposite from what Marvel is doing. That being make a movie with Reynolds and Cavill being in JLA flick, maybe, but all new cast members including Batman. THEN spinoff from that. Wonder Woman, Flash, New Batman, Superman 2, Green Lantern 2 all come out between JLA and JLA 2, and why not have some team up movies like we do in the comics. Brave and Bold or DC presents, or World's Finest. Green Arrow would be stand alone and probably best of them all. GREAT ARTICLE got my juices flowing.....that didn't sound good.

Personally a Wonder Woman, Powergirl, Zatanna, Vixen tag team jello wrestling show would be nice. Call Roulette and set it up!!!

It wouldnt surprise me if Bale cam e back for JLA....as of yet Batman hasnt had to deal with anything supernatural besides upcoming BANE....if he were to return for JLA it would open up doors for him to get thi hook up on technology that he hasnt yet discovered...since i would imagine that Batman could use and make things that were combined with technology not of this earth...."hinting at brainiac here". Anyways.....i would be very surprised if WB was not able to persuade BALE to reprise for a JLA series....especially if NOLAN were involved in a way, shape or form.

It's either build-up or spin-off. If they want to take time wisely, then they should start with a World's Finest movie; arguably the safest way for Warner Bros. (well, Superman and Batman: two of the greatest superheroes of all time; as well as two - if not the only - characters of DC that are able to be handled properly so far) to start their build-up. Then make a movie of Wonder Woman or...nothing else, actually, as Flash is a tough one. I have to say it should be pretty much like what Intruder said. They could take the risk to make a Flash movie or a Green Lantern sequel (which I honestly don't mind as long as Mark Strong is back as Sinestro), but risks would better be not taken indeed.

If they're confident enough, then take the Justice League: Mortals step. Put a whole new League, then spin each character out of it - including a new Batman. If it is successful, then everyone certainly will win. (Solo movies of DC characters will work better from spin-offs, since it means that they'll already be established; furthermore for the likes of the Flash would work better if allowed to interact with other characters of the same universe.) But then again, we've witnessed how Warner Bros.' confidences turn out so far...I can only hope for the best of them.

Great write-up, anyway. :)

Oh, very great idea from gamecreatorjj, I notice. That way they won't need to think much about having a single shared universe, at the same time it'd be sweet for the movie to take a 'Crisis' path of its own. Now I like that....if that's possible. Who knows?

And I actually doubt they will take a path similar to that of The New Frontier. As much as I love the series too, I believe people would want to see the heroes in a modern universe (well...much like what Marvel has done) more than such war-era heroes for its main movie universe. The plot elements could work in some way, though.

temoanaj - 1/18/2012, 12:03 AM
In my opinion instead of doing separate movies of each hero (which is way too Marvel!) why don't they just start a justice league movie with the three core characters (Superman, Batman and Wonder woman) and add characters in other sequels if necessary. In doing so you have time to show origins and emotional depth instead of having all of your favorite superhero's bunched in one and sacrificing plot and character development.

Memo to Warner Bros:

You want to make a Justice League movie that will kick the Avengers butt. Get Brad Bird. He directed the Incredibles animated flick. Very good. And the recent Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. The best of the series. He's the one you want. He knows how to make action/adventure movies. Pay him what you have to...
