JUSTICE LEAGUE Star Ray Fisher On Preferring DC Over Marvel And Why Superheroes Need To Be Complicated

During a "Justice Con" panel this weekend, Cyborg actor Ray Fisher reflected on meeting with Marvel Studios and Warner Bros. on the same day, while explaining what it is about the DC Universe he prefers.

Justice League star Ray Fisher was part of the "Justice Con" event this weekend, and he didn't shy away from defending Zack Snyder's work in the DC Extended Universe, explaining why he believes the filmmaker's approach to superheroes is something he's definitely a fan of.

The actor also used this chance to detail why he's a bigger fan of DC than Marvel.

"For me personally, I need something new," Fisher started. "I need something that speaks to the way the world is today, not this idealized sort of yesteryear version of who these individuals are. The world is complicated. The heroes need to be just as complicated to help people deal with the circumstances that we're facing every single day."

It's hard to escape the feeling that could be a shot at the way Joss Whedon delivered what many felt was a comic accurate take on Superman in Justice League, and Fisher went on to use the Man of Steel as an example of one of those complicated superheroes. "If an alien with superpowers came down to Earth today do you think people would be like, 'Yeah, come on let's go!’? We can't even get along with one another."

Fisher later revealed that he not only met with Justice League casting directors Lora Kennedy and Kristy Carlson when he was cast as Cyborg in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but also Marvel Studios casting director Sarah Finn...on the same day.

"After meeting Lora and Kristy, they were like 'Hey listen we have something that might be right for you. We can't really tell you what it is, but it's in the DC superhero realm of things,'" Fisher recalled. "I'm like 'I'm done. C'mon, let's go.'" Despite everything that's followed, the actor added that he has no regrets because he's been a big fan of the DC Universe since his childhood.

Who do you think Fisher could have played in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

I think this oversimplifies it a bit. DC has plenty of two-dimensional aspirational heroes and more realistic complex heroes, and so does Marvel. Spider-Man? X-Men? Daredevil? All of those fit the bill of what Fisher is describing.

Spider-Man was a bullied nerd struggling to pay bills. The X-Men were an allegory for racial and anti-LGBT oppression. Daredevil was a blind man struggling to bring order as a lawyer while going after the street criminals that slipped beneath the cracks of the flawed justice system. The Punisher is a cautionary tale of what happens when the justice system fails. The Fantastic Four started off as freak scientists coming to terms with their mutations. Etc etc.

lel, in the comics, the DC characters tend to be quite wholesome and the Marvel characters...well, let's just say there's a reason why they mostly fight each other rather than fighting the villains, so i guess he should read...more comics? :P

Or you can like both for different reasons? I don’t understand why that’s so hard...

sounds like he’s still aiming for that Cyborg gig though, so I get his position I suppose.

I agree with Fisher that complicated characters aren't bad, but more simplicity in characters is what I prefer at the end of the day. Watching movies is an escape, so I don't want to be confronted with complicated matter. Especially not Superman, the guy is supposed to be a beacon of hope.

Compared to Marvel, yes there are complicated characters, problems and developments too, but atleast it doesn't try to be a one-on-one copy from the real world. That is something Fisher and Snyder do seem to want to do in my opinion, and that makes the suspension of disbelief only harder.

When I was a boy I loved DC. Then I discovered Marvel and herores who could also be real people. Guess which one I prefer.

Realism is not the same thing as scepticism or cynicism.

@Necropolitan - Exactly. None of Snyder's movies take place in a realistic world. He literally made the sloppy, messy vigilantes of Watchmen and had them doing slow motion martial arts, and the last act of BvS is one of the least grounded sequences in any CBM

@tmp3 - You could say BVS has the ugliest and blandest looking finales in any blockbuster ever.

Marvel literally owns the rights to the first comic book to ever touch on those issues, lol

When I was a child my older brother would bring comics from DC/ Marvel/ Dark horse/ titan and Manga etc into the house.

I had no idea which hero belonged to who as a child 🤷🏿‍♂️.

I gravitated towards DC more because I was exposed to more DC comics. However I grew up on Spiderman and X-Men and loved them far more than I did Batman and superman until I got older and could appreciate Batman for not having powers 😂.

Yes I do believe that if Superman came to earth today and behaved like Superman and saved people like Superman and did all the great things that Superman does that people would overwhelmingly be behind him.

@TheUnworthyThor - IDK. I mean, Fisher can eat a bag of dicks right about now, but he's not wrong on that point. Politicians would draw their talking point lines and most people would line up right behind them, based on whichever viewpoint their "team" chose. Too bad the DCEU doesn't approach anything close to the real world.

@TheUnworthyThor - Somehow, I think that in the Age of QAnon a guy like Superman would be shoehorned into a political side and then automatically hated or loved by 50% of the population.

You’re allowed a preference but this is just being bias which is also fine, I don‘t know much about ray but I doubt he knew a thing about comics before getting the cyborg gig
