Where Does the DCCU Go Now?

Where could the DC Cinematic Universe go after Man Of Steel?

So what pieces did Man of Steel place on the board for the future DC Cinematic Universe (DCCU)?  Several actually and with a whole lot of wiggle room.  The following will contain spoilers for Man of Steel (MoS).

Two Easter Eggs with large implication were hidden in the film.  Both of these I expect to be mined further in the sequel and the team-up which follows. First is the existence of LutherCorp and, by proxy, Lex Luthor who, presumably, is already established as a man of wealth and power.  We see the LutherCorp building and a LutherCorp tanker in it’s-right-there-did-you-see-it-no-I-missed-it-dammit moments.

I like that Luthor was saved for later and here’s why:  I think he’ll be a departure from the Luthors we’ve been given on film and, more importantly, I think he’ll become a more rounded and interesting character.

Let’s have some perspective…put yourself in Metropolis.  It’s Tuesday, just another day for a citizen of Metropolis, doobie doobie dooooo…holy f#$* what was that?  Few hours later there’s no Metropolis because a race of super-powered beings you didn’t know existed 24 hours ago just destroyed it! Lex Luthor, most powerful and wealthiest man in Metropolis, what do you do?  Well for a man with the ego and lust for power he has it’s simple: you become the hero of Metropolis.  You rebuild it…it becomes your city.  And this alien that hung around after destroying Metropolis, what do we do about him.  If you’re Lex you certainly plant some seeds of doubt and you certainly give some attention and devote some resources to finding ANYTHING you can about Superman. Interesting to think about.

In this light I think we get a departure from the Lex Luthors of Hackman and Spacey and given what we saw of the characterization in MoS I don’t think that’s a surprise.  He’s not going to be the buffoon…I certainly think over time he’s going to develop into the threat we expect him to be, however, in the sequel, I think we may not see Lex as a villain…an antagonist for sure, but not a villain just yet.

The other BIG egg was the Wayne Enterprises satellite that Zod and Superman bumped into briefly.  So yes, Bruce Wayne is here and he did see this happen.

We know it’s a new Batman, what we don’t know is where in his journey is he. That will be fun to discover. We also know that Bruce is going to want to investigate, World’s Greatest Detective and such, and that is something we’ve not seen enough of in Nolanverse Batman.

Over the years Superman and Batman have had different relationships dependent on who was writing.  Sometimes friends, sometimes reluctant allies, sometimes foes...we know this will end with a team-up but we do not know how they get there.  I’m wondering, if at first, we can’t quite tell the difference between Bruce Wayne’s interests in Superman and Lex Luthor’s.  And if that mistrust is there I’d just be so happy to see the seeds of Tower of Babel dropped in the fertile DCCU soil.

So what else?  Well where did that missing Kryptonian from that empty pod go? What has Kara Zor-El been up to on Earth and for how long?  S.T.A.R. labs…I hear they make a decent Cyborg.  Was that a Ferris aircraft I saw, and was that really Carol Ferris who thought Superman was hot?

Clearly they’ve left the door wide open as to what comes next and I have faith that with Snyder behind the camera and Goyer writing scripts they are going to finally put things right and bring legendary characters onto the screen in a way that represents them faithfully to the pages of the comics.  I’m certainly thrilled to see what comes next.

Don't. Reboot. Anything.

If at all possible, they should NOT reboot the Dark Knight. That is going to cost them millions. What should happen next is a Wonder Woman film and Green Lantern reboot film BEFORE Man of Steel 2. After Man of Steel 2, follow it up with a World's Finest and and then Justice League. Throughout the other movies introduce in minor roles other heroes that make up rest of the Justice League.

I really hope we don't get a shared universe. It's too soon after Nolan's Batman trilogy to reboot, yet that version of the character clearly isn't part of Man of Steel's universe. Similarly, I don't want that awful Green Lantern movie tied to Man Of Steel, and it's too soon to reboot that.

Plus, Man Of Steel didn't even feel like a set up to a shared universe, it seemed quite separate and that a few Easter Eggs were thrown in either as a nod to fans or because WB are now trying to rush this Justice League movie - and I know the makers of MOS are now saying it's the first part of The Justice League series but I'm not convinced that it was from the start. Just because Wayne Enterprises exists in this universe doesn't mean Batman has to. Gotham was mentioned in Superman Returns. Superman was mentioned in Batman and Robin. They never lead anywhere - this doesn't have to either. They've finally managed to just about get Superman right again after like 30 years, I want to see this version of the character stand on its own two feet, rather than shoehorning it into a Justice League movie.

It's ridiculous to say it's too expensive to reboot Batman but want a Green Lantern reboot when it cost loads for the first film and it didn't make it back in Box Office. I do however want this to be the start of a DCCU because you can't connect the Nolanverse or Martin Campbell's Green Lantern universe with the Man of Steel one.

Sorry ac1 its part of a shared universe. That much we know. Its "how that universe evolves and who should be introduced when?"is the real question. And i for one am looking forward to it.

Do Man of Steel 2&3, a Flash movie, Wonder Woman movie, keep the Dark Knight trilogy part of the DCU. For Green Lantern, do a loose sequel, it follows the first one but has almost nothing to do with it. That way you don't have to do the origin again. Maybe do an Aquaman film, then JL.

Next Batman movie should be a reboot. Last movie before Justice League, first appearance of Batman himself in the DC Cinematic Universe, a year into his career and the villains being Black Mask, Deathstroke and Calendar Man.

What I'm looking forward to in a new Batman is one who can fight, as seen in comics, animated series { BTAS and JLU } and in the trailers for recent Arkham games. Give us a Batman who's a master at martial arts and more gymnastic/athleticism style to his fighting. Nolans fight scenes were kool but I would like to see a full fledged fighter in Batman.

As Ras Al Ghul said " "You know how to fight six men, we can teach you how to engage six hundred" :]

I think Christopher Meloni would've made an awesome Lex Luthor if he hadn't had be Col. Hardy

Oh and speaking of easter eggs...Col. Hardys' call sign in the movie was " guardian "...Could he have been the films version of DC character Guardian? :]

If Batman was going to fight like he did in the Arkham games, he would look ridiculous. The actor would have to be on a wire at all times, he'd look like Neo vs. the Smith army in The Matrix Reloaded.

To fight six hundred men, you don't do crazy flips and jumps. Seriously, try doing that and not getting tired, I don't care how in shape you are. You move systematically and takedown each opponent.

I love the Arkham games and the animated series, but if they reboot, I want no influence from them. I really get tired of people defaulting to them for guidance because they have no creativity.

@KAC Who do you think should be the villain of a WW movie?

You can't possibly include the TDK trilogy as part of this universe. Why? Because, in case you forgot, Bruce Wayne went broke and lost control of Wayne Enterprises. Wayne Enterprises is basically broke. So how can a broke Bruce Wayne with no control of a broke Wayne Enterprises have a satellite in orbit that has the Wayne Enterprises logo? He can't. You pretty much have to reboot, so that you once again have a billionaire Bruce Wayne with a huge company at his command. It would be far too hard to explain him somehow coming back from the dead & getting all his money back & putting Wayne Enterprises back in a profitable position. (Yes, he lost his money through fraud & so might get it back, but I just don't see them taking the time to go through all that. Plus, that Batman/Bruce Wayne would really be too old, nearing 40 at least. You need a Batman around the same age as Superman.)

It'd be so easy to pick up where the dark knight rises leaves off. You guys make it sound like there'd be a thousand things to explain but there wouldn't be if they did it right. However Warner bros. never does anything right, I'll give you that.

@eachonman

You are absolutely right! The two franchises are not contradictory at all. Worse yet if you combined them, you would already have four superheroes established -without having to make another movie - Batman, Superman, Catwoman (currently a member of the Justice League) and Nightwing.

Continuing with the same Batman can and should happen. If it does not, it is because someone did not let it and not because it did not make sense. Financially, it makes all of the sense in the world and I think would all but guarantee a billion+ dollar movie.

@Lhornbk

You are completely wrong! First, Bruce Wayne was personally broke, not Wayne Enterprises which is why they still had a board meeting after the trade fiasco. Second as you pointed out once they reverse the illegal trades not only would that restore Wayne's money but if countries and businesses turn to Wayne Enterprises to help rebuild Metropolis and develop weapons in response to the Kryptonian attack he could quadruple the value of Wayne Enterprises over night making him richer than ever. How does he explain his disappearance...he was held captive by Banes henchman...which is true!.

Why would he come out of retirement?...Because the world needs Batman which is absolutely consistent with his character since he did the exact same thing(coming back from retirement)before.

The DK trilogy was interesting, but not much fun (and I like my Caped Crusader DARK). I can't wait to see Batman as the guy in the comics of the last decade. I must say, I'm never reading a review of Superman or anything else, for that matter, again. This is a fact: moviegoers see films because they want to, and we go to have fun. Reviewers and critics go because it's their job, and they have to; do we get the difference here, yet?

Don't reboot Batman. Batman in TDK trilogy is awesome. Actually he fights and detective enough. But of course there is limitation in screen time, there is a space must be leave behind for character and plot development. Something that MOS has failed to deliver.

Don't reboot it. And don't include/introduce Batman in MOS 2. He is bigger than Superman today. It's an insult if they're introducing Batman in Superman movie. The dark knight won't be under of "Government's slave" AKA Superman. (LOL I take "Dark Knight Returns" too personal here).

Please do Flash..Wonder woman or Green arrow films instead..before rebooting the Batman.
