ZACK SNYDER'S JUSTICE LEAGUE: Scanline VFX On Building The City & Cosmic Footsteps For The Flash Rewind Scene

Love it or hate it, Justice League has defied the seemingly impossible by getting a second chance, and we chatted with Scanline VFX about the work they did to develop the big Flash rewind scene!

The comic book movie community was certainly divided when Zack Snyder's Justice League was officially announced, but regardless of how you happen to feel about the end result, some of the action sequences were undeniably impressive.

Several exciting moments were expanded upon or added from scratch, including the slo-mo sequence with Kiersey Clemons' Iris West, and an incredible, Flashpoint-inspired "rewind" scene towards the end of the film.

We recently had the chance to speak exclusively with Scanline VFX's Julius Lechner and Curtis Carlson about what they added to the film during their extensive edits. During our chat, Carlson geeked out about the Flash sequence, and spoke about how much work it took to incorporate the city.

"We did all of the cosmic rewind stuff with the Flash and building the city. So that was a really cool process to see through because it obviously wasn't in the 2017 version. So when we picked up the edit, it was a mixture of old post-vis of things that they had done in 2016, 2017, and then had the opportunity to run with it and design that whole beat. For the trailer back in the summer, we did four shots where the city explodes, and the Flash starts to phase. And then there was the close-up where he's running and talking to his dad and then the two close-up shots of the legs and the cosmic footsteps.

So we developed those independently before the whole city had been finalized out. Those shots got approved and were stakes in the sand of where we needed to go to fill in the rest of the edit so that as we built up the city over those next couple of months, for that one large crazy rewind, we knew what buildings had to be there. I think the effects department did a great job of having the city, destroying it, and then reversing that simulation to achieve that effect. We were chipping away at the sequence for those whole six or seven months, the largest shots. That was one of the last things that we ended up delivering because it took months and months to build out the city and develop all the simulations."

What did you guys think of the rewind scene and Zack Snyder's Justice League in general?

This sequence was very impressive and one of the highlights of an already great movie. I'd love to see a little Behind The Scene documentary to see their work in progress while creating that whole sequence.

"I think the effects department did a great job of having the city, destroying it, and then reversing that simulation to achieve that effect."

I think that was a really smart choice, to treat the sequence as a "time-reversal" even in the way it was animated.

@Amuro - A great tribute to the dc trinity.

Can’t say I love the choice of actor for the Flash... but I did enjoy that sequence.

Flash still runs like shit, but I really enjoyed that sequence.
It'll be interesting to see what Muschietti does with Miller.

The Flash is shown as being extremely over-powered, so much so that I think that's why he has zero interactions (conversations or fights) with Steppenwolf, who is shown as being useless against super-speed

I think that if Cyborg, Aquaman, Wonder Woman and Flash had worked as a unit, they could have defeated Steppenwolf and the parademons without needing to resurrect Superman

@lordSTALE - I don't agree - throughout the movie barry allen is rather scared of confrontations, he's good at running away and defensive but lacks that confidence and agression others have. You can even see it in his personality. He doesn't even fight the parademons which are weak, he just dodges them. So because of that he does what he thinks he's best at - supporting others and saving them when needed. Only at the end he discovers how powerful he really is.

@lordSTALE - I'm kind of tired of seeing speedsters and big hitters getting sidelined because writers don't know what to do with them in combat. Flash running in circles, Quicksilver getting his legs broken. Even Thor getting stuck shooting lightning at a space hole in Avengers and Strange getting stuck holding back a wall of water.

I get that there are a lot of moving pieces in these kinds of movies, but there is a happy medium between "humans are useless" and "contriving a reason to keep the OP characters occupied or disabled" and some movies don't seem to try hard to find it. Justice League in particular seemed to suffer from both extremes (Flash in circles, Superman just casually pins a dude against the ground, and Batman still ultimately doesn't do much).

@lordSTALE - I think Flash' inability to really be a heavy hitter was better done in JL17. Really like how the ''save one person at the time'' gives Flash a clear mission for himself.

@ElectricRetard - honestly, for all his faults, jl17 did a better job in portraying flash as being scared of confrontations, with the whole "save one" speech. In zsjl I never got the feeling that flash was scared or lacked confidence, he saved Iris with no problems and even picked up the hot dog, that made me think he was sure of himself enough to not worry too much about her. Plus he stopped that guy in the bvs footage, he pushed a parademon at some point, he was ready to face superman and got scared simply because that was the first time someone moved as fast as him, but all these things don't really give a "scared of confrontations" vibe imo.

@ElectricRetard - Actually you do agree, you just don't realize it

"throughout the movie barry allen is rather scared of confrontations"

"lacks that confidence and agression others have"

Barry was written in this way precisely to keep him away from fights in the Snyder Cut because of how overpowered he is. In the tunnel fight, he's wasting time cheering people on as they go upstairs while Wonder Woman is in a 1v1 fight with Steppenwolf. He later returns to the fight ONLY to tap WW's sword into her hand (which was a completely unnecessary action BTW, it just looked cool). He then immediately dodges Batman's crawler tank thing, runs into a pile of rubble and knocks himself out for the rest of this fight

At the end, he's relegated to running in a circle to build up a charge, which again is a gigantic waste of time for this extremely overpowered character, because he builds just enough charge in that final straight run-up

@Spock0Clock - To be fair, Thor shooting lightning at the portal was shown as being arguably the most helpful thing during that fight. He was easily destroying all of their reinforcements (wiping out multiple leviathans), while the others worked on the aliens that were already through the portal. You have a good point with Strange and the speedsters

I didn't like what they did with the flash, like how he can't touch people while running or how they gave him dumb things to do instead of being useful during the fights, but that was a really good sequence, ngl.

''I think the effects department did a great job of having the city, destroying it, and then reversing that simulation to achieve that effect.''

I can agree with the that. The sequence was pretty good. The only that ruined it was the dialogue during that scene. Just felt kinda off.

The visuals in this movie were really good, no need to deny that. The color correction didn't work in its favor sadly as it obscured certain effects and didn't let them shine as much as they should.

But overall the effect houses did an excellent job on this film. Now if the story, acting and directing followed suit that would have been great.

The Flash (along with the other JL members) was a redeemable character in the Snyder Cut. For Muschietti, he's got a lot of work ahead of him for the character.
