Marvel Studios Executive Producer Touts Company's "Quality First, Then Diversity" Approach

Marvel executive producer Nate Moore says the company will not rush a production just to meet a diversity quota or achieve some PC agenda - even when it's a character they're excited about.

Marvel has Black Panther hitting theaters in 2018, which will mark the first mainstream superhero film focusing on a minority.  They'll follow that up with Captain Marvel and Ant-Man & The Wasp, two films shining the spotlight on two stalwarts from the comic publisher's female superhero roster.  However, ever since the Marvel Cinematic Universe kicked off with 2008's Iron Man, fans have been vocal about wanting minority superheroes to appear on screen, particularly the King of Wakanda and Carol Danvers.

Speaking to Complex, executive producer Nate Moore says Marvel simply has an unwavering commitment to excellence which doesn't allow them to put out a film that doesn't meet their high standards.

"We want to tell the best stories with the strongest developed characters and scripts that we can. Our biggest concern is that, in trying to get more characters out there, we rush something that’s not ready and we deliver something that’s not up to our standards. So it’s less about us rushing a character that’s diverse to get it out quickly and more about figuring out how to do it right. "

Black Panther hits theaters on February 18, 2018.  Ant-Man & The Wasp premieres on July 6, 2018 while Captain Marvel's standalone film arrives on March 8, 2019.

@NoMeaning45 - how did you like WW?? I watched it twice this week and really liked it (couldn't stand the first act though). WW > Cap1

@NoMeaning45 - Except when they pushed Black Panther, which was when it was already in production, for Spider-man basically right when they got the rights.

@CaptDeadpool - I think they're about equal. Love them both. The only things that brought WW down for me was the length (which made it drag at times), and the weak villain, which reminded me of your typical Marvel villain.

@RagnarGolem - Always an excuse. Just do it, like they do ANY OTHER PROPERTY. They put Guardians of the Galaxy forward without any excuses, for crying out loud.

@Luminus - BIG ANALYSIS:

Supergirl (1984), Catwoman (2004), Elektra (2005) - female superhero films - giant flops and terrible movies!

Sheena (1984), Red Sonja (1985), Tank Girl (1995), Barb Wire (1996), All Comic Book Adaptations, all big flops.

SORRY GUYS, but that's how hollywood works: Many Big Flops, no more movies, many Big Hits, many more movies.

Until 2008, even outside comic book adaptations, hardly a film with a action heroine as the lead would be a success. We had very few exceptions. And those few who succeeded had a small or medium budget. Comic movies are usually very expensive to make.

Before 2008, the only exceptions were: Alien (1979), Alien (s) (1986), Charlie's Angels (2000), the first Tomb Raider (2001 - Angelina Jolie was a big star), Kil Bill (2003-2004, Tarantino's power), the first films of Underworld and Resident Evil (the brand is very strong).

But we also had many big flops: Aeon Flux (2005), Serenity (2005), Ultraviolet (2006), Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009), etc.

But in 2008, something changed. More and more successes began to emerge with female protagonists.

- Twilight (2008- 2012) was the first really big hit (like a big blockbuster) with a female lead.

- Hunger Games (2012-2015)

- The Divergent Series (2014-2016)

- The Force Awakens (2015)

- Rogue One (2016)

Wonder Woman was made now and it was not by accident. Not for goodness, Nor by representativeness. They knew they now had a large audience for movies with female leads. Especially since 2012, with Hunger Games being an absolute success and featuring an action heroine.

Marvel and DC announced Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman in 2014. Just after the great success of Hunger Games. DC was faster. Congratulations. But, please, don't be so naive or biased.

@RagnarGolem - EXCUSES.

Resident Evil. One of the worst film series has 6 movies, with another one on the way. Here is the track record:

https://www.rottentomatoes .com/franchise/resident_evil/

In case that's not clear, the franchise is a miserable failure, yet they keep making more. Why? Because it's about a hot woman who kicks ass. The end. You think any respected actress is looking to star there?

Elektra had just about as much work put into it as Suicide Squad, and you expected us to take that seriously? Catwoman wasn't even based on the character and was about an evil cosmetologist; come on!

Barb Wire was a B film. Are you serious? Your list is a laughable failure of excuses. We know for a fact, FACT, that Hollywood is biased, so why are you defending them? What do you have to gain?

Look at the terrible Black Panther poster they just released. How does that happen? What excuse are they going to give, if the film fails? "Oh, well, I guess no one wants to see movies with diverse characters. Oh, well. We tried."

A good movie is a good movie is a good movie. Period. Jut make one with non white male leads.

No Excuses!

@Luminus - HAHAHAHAHA! OKAY!

What is the excuse to WB take 75 years to make Wonder Woman? 51 years after the first Batman.

So after Black Panther, what comes next? Will we continue to see more diverse characters leading future Marvel properties?

Yes. So we’re finishing up what we call Phase 3, which will sort of end with the fourth Avengers film in 2019. And then I think for us, we continue that conversation of, what’s next? Who will be the new heroes who can tell great new stories and bring us to new worlds that we haven’t even had a chance to visit yet, while still expanding on the slate of heroes we have and finding the next step for characters people have come to love? We’re looking for the next best story. And then we let the story tell us what we should be making as part of that one united narrative in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
