UPDATE: Mark Romanek Off List Of Directors In The Running For The Wolverine!

The director of Never Let Me Go has confirmed that he passed up the oppurtunity to direct the Japan set movie featuring Hugh Jackman as Wolverine! Hit the jump for details...

After Oscar nominated director Darren Aronofsky walked away from The Wolverine back in March, Fox have been hunting for another filmmaker to take his place in bringing the popular mutant to the big screen. While a recent shortlist contained names like Justin Lin and Doug Liman (to name just a couple) one of those on the list has now taken themselves out of the running in a recent interview with Digital Spy.

"That's just one of those stories that floated around. I was on their list, I received the script months ago. It didn't seem like my kind of thing."

"That script was a terrific version of that kind of thing, but not something I felt really passionate about."


What do you guys think about this? Are you disappointed that Romanek has passed up the chance to direct The Wolverine? While Never Let Me Go, which starred The Amazing Spider-Man's Andrew Garfield, received a lot of praise from the critics, I always found it hard to imagine the director being suited to this sort of project. UPDATE: It's being reported by various sources that some of the other directors on the previously released shortlist may also have passed on The Wolverine for other projects. Liman is said to be moving on Luna while Fuqua is aiming to direct Eminem in Southpaw. Stay tuned for more as we have it!

Well it's good that everyone is praising the script. This guy is not right for something like Wolverine. Just bring on Matt Reeves and everything will go perfect if Fox doesn't interfere.

tea@ he also direct One Hour Photo which in my opinion was pretty good movie.

Romanek definitely isnt the right one to this movie tho. He is more like a Thriller/drama type of director. Tho it would have been interesting to see him behind it.

Wolverine needs someone who can make a interesting story, bring great drama in it and create visually stunning action scenes.

I would like to see someone like Guillermo Del Toro, Chan-Wook Park (Oldboy) or Takashi Miike behind it.

Takashi Miike is definitely my top choice!:) Ichi The Killer/13 Assassins type of Wolverine movie would be [frick]ing EPIC!

@AlexDeLarge87 - what about someone like Paul Greengrass? His two Bourne films were excellent. If it has to be someone on that list then Doug Liman would get my vote

Agreed. That's because after the first Origins movie and the bad rep it got, directors are nervous about being linked to another poorly made Wolverine saga, and I personally don't blame them. Look what happened to poor Brett Ratner.

@CHAS65 - Agreed. Ratner gets all the hate for that movie and while he isnt blameless he didnt write the film, and we also have Mathew Vaughan to thank for the casting of Vinnie Jones who should not be let near any film set and was one of the worst things about that film.

krypton38@ Greengrass could work too. His and Liman´s Bourne movies had pretty intense action scenes so its fine by me as long as they do it justice. :)

Still Miike would be my top choice.

I actually wanted Romanek to direct it. Both Never Let Me Go and One hour Photo were really good movies, and very interesting movies, and his style of slow build and drama and thriller tension would have been good for Wolverine.

Of the directors on the list, right now the one I am hoping gets the job is James Mangold. I absolutly loved Walk the Line, great character piece that would work with Wolverine. The action in 3:10 to Yuma was top notch, plus he already has worked with Jackman on Kate and Leapold. Plus, even though Knight and Day was a bad movie, the action was great.

Other directors I would like to see take on Wolverine are...
Brian De Palma (Mission Impossible, Carrie, the Untoucables, Scarface, Blowout, Mission to Mars)

Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Let Me In)

Nimrod Antal (Predators, Armored, Vacancy)

Brad Anderson (Session 9, the Machinist, Transsiberian)

Alejandro González Iñárritu (Bable, Bitiful, 21 Grams)



All of them are talented directors that would each bring something new, fresh, and interesting to Wolverine.

Yeah ecks! You have no idea how many times i'd line up to see a live action Wolverine Japan Saga that looked like V for Vendetta and a dash of Ninja Assassin. I mean seriously, who other has done ninja AND comic book films than McTeigue? To me it's just plain logic.
