Thomas Jane On Missing Out On Jonah Hex and The Punisher He would Like to Make!

Thomas Jane tells us how he feels about missing out on the Jonah Hex film and whether or not he would like to do another Punisher movie.

MTV talked with actor Thomas Jane at Long Beach Comic Con. He was there to promote his Dark Country directorial debut. Of course they had to ask him how he felt about missing out on the roll of Jonah Hex to Josh Brolin. They also asked if he was up for another round as The Punisher? Here is what he had to say on both subjects.

On Jonah Hex

"I think I dodged a bullet there. "

He explains that he would have liked to do a Jonah Hex film...

"but not the one that they did."

"The script that I read was totally different than the movie they ended up doing. I think once Josh Brolin came on board, they changed directors and they changed writers and it turned into a whole different animal. The movie I would've done was a completely different animal."

On doing another Punisher movie...

"Not yet. The 'Punisher' franchise died such a grisly death that I don't foresee it coming back any time soon. But I hope it does because I have a great f---ing story that I want to tell, and using Frank Castle to tell it would be ideal. So I'm hoping that someday we revive that."

"But Disney now owns the rights to the Marvel characters, so that could present a challenge, too. I'm certainly not going to make the Disney version of The Punisher. But there might be a way to do it... It's in a bit of a quandary right now for how to do it and how to do it right."

Hawksblueyes: Personally, i would love to see Jane get another crack at The Punisher.

Thomas Jane had the look and the voice, he just needed a more violent script.
Ray Stevenson had the tone but his movie was just too silly.
I just want someone to make Garth Ennis' Punisher Max, maybe like a HBO series or something.

Jane has a point with Disney / Punisher. Sure, Disney HAS put out R-rated films, but let's face it, it's NOT their forte (by a long shot!). Punisher NEEDS to be gritty and DARK, and Disney is not known for getting it's hands dirty!

As for DeNiro, call me crazy but I could really see him as Microchip!

I hated the Punisher movie with Jane but that was cause it was just a crap-tastic film (IMO). I thought Jane was fine in the roll. Just a shame about everything else!

And I for one, didn't hate War Zone as much as a lot of people. I felt it was, at least, the closest to the comic that we've see thus far.

Still a ways to go till they get it right (if they ever get it right, that is).

Even though the Thomas Jane Punisher movie had some flaws, I think he was great as Frank Castle and would like to see him back in the role, but with a more grisly style like Blade.

I love Punisher, one of my all time favorite characters. Frank Castle is the shit.

How was Jane as the Punisher? IMO he was very good, but he was in a crap movie, hampered by a director who wanted to make a western and not a Punisher film. In the long run who do I think was a better Punisher?
Photobucket
The win goes to Jane on that one. Its not that Ray did a bad job; I thought he was quite good. I, however, just think Jane put forth a more nuanced performance, but bordering on too emotional really. Ray had the stoniness, but didn’t give us much going on beneath.

Will Jane play Frank again? I wouldn’t mind it, but as is the case with all reboots I support the idea of total recasting, or else why reboot. So do I think he’ll be back? Honestly, no, I think that ship has sailed.

Who else could make a good Punisher?

Javier Bardem:
Photobucket
The guy can act his balls off in any role, but seeing him as Anton Chigurh in “No Country for Old Men” I really fell in love with the guy as Frank. He has the voice that I would love to hear reading the narration of the War Journal as the film plays and he has this quiet unrelenting menace about him. You know he’s just going to keep coming no matter what, hurt him and he bleeds and it will slow him down, but it won’t shake him and he will just keep on coming. His look works for Frank as well, almost ugly, broken nose, deep staring eyes, stony face that plays great with harsh shadows and as he is in his 40’s, which is that happy medium age for Frank, he can look older yet still play younger. Set the film in High Crime era 80’s NYC/Brooklyn/Hell’s Kitchen/Bronx and you have a winner.

Josh Brolin:
Photobucket
Like Bardem, Brolin is a “No Country for Old Men” vet and like Bardem he handed in a great performance in that film. He is a very versatile actor, though not able to exude that menace in any roles I have seen him in. He occasionally tries to hard when playing the bad ass, as he did in “American Gangster.” Could he pull of a convincing Frank Castle? I think so, but just not as convincing as others. He does however have great presence and a stillness about him that would work wonderfully for Frank.

Jeffery Dean Morgan:
Photobucket
I like Morgan, but like Brolin he can try too hard to be a bad ass at times. Castle can’t appear to be trying to be a bad ass, he simply IS a bad ass, you have to look at him and know it without him looking into the camera and squinting. I loved him as the Comedian in “Watchmen” and he was a decent Clay in “Losers,” but in both those films he had the benefit of dialogue to enhance his coming off as a tough guy, a good Punisher flick would have Frank speak sparsely relegating him mostly to narration. I don’t know if Morgan has the chops to pull of the silent type.

Johnny Messner:
Photobucket
This guy is a wild card, in terms of appearance he would be a great young Frank. In terms of acting; I haven’t seen him in much outside of “Tears of the Sun” and his resume is a little sparse. He is a good quite tough guy type.

I'd like to see Castle as his MAX incarnation, ie as someone who did serve in Vietnam. Pierce Brosnan wold fit age-wise and he'd nail it. Still like Thomas Jane, though.

Jane was cool as the Punisher I want to see him do it again.Jonah Hex was not good at all even Josh Brolin said it turned out bad. Hex was a bounty hunter with a bad scare. But, there wasn't no supernatural powers or cool gadgets. If they went with the comic version it would have been a better film.Oh and Megan Fox still can't act.

I would be quite happy to have Jane back as Frank Castle, as long as he's given a script that's actually worth something. I was a little dubious about his acting chops at one point, then I saw The Mist, the first film since I was pre-teens that actually moved me emotionally. If the guy can do that, then I'm happy to see him given another shot.

I liked Jane as Castle and I liked the movie, but I just didn't like the changes they made from the comic, which War Zone fixed but the movie it self was no where close to Janes films awesomness.

I think with the Punisher the setting is going to be the key thing. Frank has to be anchored in Vietnam; no two ways about it there simply is no more modern equivalent for the trauma that war bred in the men that fought it. Problem is, as with the MAX series, this makes Frank 60+ in the modern day. Second, when you look at NYC today it doesn't really need a Punisher, it’s one of the safest places in America.

The solution to the problem comes in the form of leaving Frank alone and moving the time period of the film to the late seventies to late eighties era. This gives you the Frank young enough to be believable as a hardcore vigilante and the urban wasteland environment that NYC and especially Brooklyn was back then.

Frank is a creature of his time; times have changed a bit and kind of edged him out a bit.

In the end, you give us a solid actor, a director who gets Frank, Ennis evolved in story development, a damn good script writer, period piece about the bad old days, and a solid hard R rating with realistic (not over the top cartoonish) violence, the type that hakes you squirm and say "Oh, God." and not the type that makes you outright laugh, i.e. killing a free runner with a [frick]ing heat seeker, and you might have yourself a Punisher film worthy of the MAX line that could actually put asses in seats at the theater
