Long-range projections have Pacific Rim Uprising pulling in pretty modest numbers in its opening weekend at the domestic box office. According to BoxOffice Pro, the sequel to Guillermo del Toro's 2013 monsters vs robots epic will be in the $20 million range during its first three days in theatres.
Pacific Rim Uprising will be released on March 22, between the releases of two other action movies: Tomb Raider and Ready Player One. This stiff springtime competition is projected to cut into Uprising's box office gross.
The first Pacific Rim grossed over $37 million in its opening weekend, below expectations for a movie that cost $190 million to make. However, the international box office helped make the movie profitable, as more than three-quarters of its $411 million worldwide gross came from outside North America.
Pacific Rim Uprising was partly filmed in China, and the film was made with the international audience in mind. The studio hopes to make a large chunk of its profits in China as well.
