STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI Director Rian Johnson Says Fan Theories Haven't Nailed Anything Significant

Almost everyone on the internet has some sort of wild theory about Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but director Rian Johnson has assured us that no one has really hit the mark with any of them...

"Snoke is Darth Plagueis."
"Rey is a Kenobi."
"Luke turns to the Dark Side."

Fan theories surrounding Star Wars have kicked into overdrive, especially surrounding the release of The Last Jedi, which promises to answer some of the burning questions we've had for the last two years. True to the nature of the internet, there is some wild stuff out there, but some float inside of realm of plausibility. According to director Rian Johnson, no one has quite landed on the truth.

“I mean, [I've read] nothing that’s really nailed big stuff," Johnson said at The Last Jedi press junket. "No, which… I love reading the fan theories, you know, having been a Star Wars fan myself and been on the other side of the curtain most of my life it’s pretty cool to be back behind, like peeking through saying seeing like I would have people guessing.”

Star Daisy Ridley also admitted to reading one of the more popular fan theories about her character, Rey. "I mean, I’ve read a fan theory about Immaculate Conception," Ridley told Screen Rant. "In fact, that was the only one that I read because someone directed me toward it and I was like you should get to work. Immaculate Conception. Then someone told me that I was actually Snoke or something or other, and it was time travel and I do think it’s hilarious that there’s this like great character and everyone was trying to attribute it to another character."

Seeing as Ridley includes it with a list of other ridiculous theories, it's probably safe to say that this one is off the table as well. Where do you think The Last Jedi will take us as it releases next week? Let us know your wildest theories below.

Still rather have had the books made into movies, or at least kept the books as a backdrop to new stories. Most people haven't kept up on 30 years of star wars books, it would've made exactly the same amount of money because its star wars, and the all the mysteries and hype would've still been there. Marvel has done age of ultron, civil war, and soon infinity war. Every nerd out there basically knows what should happen, but it still has a few changes, and its still going to make a bajillion dollars. How much cooler would it have been if in these movies they would actually drop a few names like Mara Jade, Kyle Katarn, or Dash Rendar? I was so stoked when that YT2400 showed up in rebels, but of course, the big reveal is that its just some random kid in it. Just make his name Dash for crying out loud, keep the episode exactly the same, and it would have been so much more meaningful.

Every character name drop you get in a marvel movie or an after credit scene gets a big cheer from all the nerds in the audience. We never get that in star wars because they changed enough of the history that besides Thrawn, we never get anything recognizable. I will say, having Thrawn back was pretty huge, but again, how much better would it have been if we had no idea he was coming, and he steps out at the end of an actual movie thanos style, instead of a cartoon???

All the hype over the big mysteries is sort of lost for me because some of us found out what happened after return of the jedi once already. Doesn't matter what lucas says, the books bore his name and his characters and tried infinitely harder than some film makers to keep the timeline consistent out of respect for Lucas' work. I like everyone else 20-30 years ago counted it as part of the story. No matter what these movies do, I would be infinitely more excited with one or 2 big name drops from the EU or whatever they are calling the books now. Nostalgia from past movies is great, but a little nostalgia from the books now and then would be appreciated by quite a large group of people, im sure.

@hartley07 - For me Zhan’s Thrawn trilogy and the following Jedi Academy trilogy are canon. Those were just wonderfully written stories and far more impactful than what they started in E7.

@411IDSigo - But you know why they would never adapt those books or other media into movies ? Because Disney is GREEDY. If they adapted those works....then disney gotta pay up. So better for them to keep it in house and reap all the money.
