Beloved 'Doctor Who' companion passes away...

Actress Elisabeth Sladen, best known as Sarah Jane Smith in the original 'Doctor Who' series and its spin-off 'The Sarah Jane Adventures', lost her battle with cancer.

Ms. Sladen began her acting career in 1965, but is best know in the science fiction world by her character Sarah Jane Smith, an investigative journalist who first appeared in 1973 in the British science fiction series ‘Doctor Who’. She continued the role for three and a half years, leaving the series in 1976. The role never left her as she reprised it for an failed attempted spin-off called ‘K-9 and Company’ in 1981 and again for the 20th anniversary Doctor Who episode (aptly titled ‘The Five Doctors’).

As the series apparently faded from the collective consciousness during the ‘dark-times’ of the late eighties up until the 2005 re-launch, Ms. Sladen was still involved in the ‘Doctor Who’ universe, participating in the 1993 Children in Need Special ‘Dimensions in Time’, the independently produced video ‘Downtime’, and several audio plays based on her character produced by Big Finish Productions.

In 2005, with the successful re-launch of ‘Doctor Who’, the producers were looking for a way to tie it back to the classic series. What better way than to bring back on if it’s most popular companions? In 2006 Sarah Jane met (or re-met) the Doctor (now in his tenth incarnation) in the episode ‘School Reunion’. It quickly became one of the most beloved episodes of the season as it resonated everything that was and is truly ‘Who’ with fans old and new.

Based on her success, she was offered her own spin-off series, ‘The Sarah Jane Adventures’. A ‘second attempt’ at ‘K-9 and Company’, this series learned from its predecessor’s mistakes and focused more on the human element (and less on the ‘tin dog’). Whereas ‘Doctor Who’ was for a family audience (and it’s first spin-off ‘Torchwood’ was strictly for adults), ‘Sarah Jane’ was more kid friendly, introducing youngsters to possibly their first experience to science fiction, but in a slightly lighter tone than to be expected from the genre.

Elisabeth Sladen was 63.

For those who loved and grew up with your work, Ms. Sladen you will be missed…

Thanks for the article Logan.

I had no idea she was ill. Miss Sladen was my fav Dr.Who companion when I was a kid and was one of the best. Funny, I just watched "School Reunion" on the weekend with my gf (who just loves Who after never seeing it before I introduced her to it), and I was explaining the whole her being back in that episode.

Sarah Jane will be missed.

Sorry Dragon, but it may have been already posted, but there was nothing to it. Lame article. Logan's is by far better. There was real thought put into it.

Eviltwin - It's all right. Dragonzord is correct - the other artcile WAS posted before mine, but I honestly wasn't aware of it when I worte this. Being a HUGE fan of all things 'Doctor Who' (and of Ms. Sladen - I had the priviledge of meeting her at a con when I was a wee Time-tot... SWEET woman!), I felt the need to contribute my 'two-cents'. I won't take mine down, but if Galactus (in his infinte wisdom) decides to make a ruling, I'll stand by it.

It was such a shock hearing this last night, I actually had to double check when I woke up. So sad. RIP

And yeah, the other article had nothing to it, literally like 2 lines.

I had seen the other article, but this one brought a tear to my eye. Thanks Logan.
We will miss you, Elisabeth.

I was having a discussion the other night with my brother about how they should do another multiple Dr Who special. Get Christopher Eccleston, David Tenant, and Matt Smith with Elizabeth Sladen and some other companions. It was fun to see Sarah Jane with Matt Smith's version of the Doctor with Jo Grant in the SJA.

It wouldn't be quite the same if she wasn't in it.

Lucky you got to meet her Logan!

I agree with all, she was a real cutie back in the day. Even when I was around 10 I had a crush on her.

Apparently Ms. Sladen had been ill for several years, but hid it from the public. My condolences to her family, and to her extended 'Doctor Who' family across the world - we all miss her.

Now I AM depressed! I just found out Nicholas Courtney (Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge Stewart) passed away in February - I had no clue! I also met him at a couple of cons - charming man. I'm off to sulk now...

I thought I read something on him on AICN a little while back regarding his passing Logan. So sad too, he was great as Brigadier!!

Just happened to re-watch last week (for the first time in around 30 years), the first episode of Pertwee's Doctor with the Brigadier in it. Good stuff.

It's a shame that a lot of the Hatnell through Pertwee episodes have been lost/destroyed. The carelessness of the BBC archives has forever robbed future generations of some CLASSIC television!

I was a huge fan of the Tom Baker Doctor Who and she was a major part of that show. She will be missed. RIP Elisabeth.

I'm shocked beyond belief, I never even thought that she was sick as the last time I saw her about a year ago she was so full of life and all smiles. Prior to Karen Gillan and other than Billie Piper, she was one of the best companions of Dr Who that I really liked. RIP Elizabeth Sladen.... she will be sorely missed.

May her afterlife be like a never ending adventure on the TARDIS.

I just started watching Dr Who last month and Christopher Eccleston was my first Doctor. As the series progressed and Tenant became the 10th Doctor, I caught an episode with Sarah Jane. I became curious about her role in the show's past, so I started watching Tom Baker (greatest voice EVER) episodes. She was so damn charming and I have to admit pretty damn sexy, or as Baker would put it "well fit" lol. RIP Elisabeth Sladen.
